Chapter 31: Planting seeds
Coco had chosen a small clearing in the mountain forest for her lettuce garden, a spot where the sun shone through the trees, illuminating the area and providing enough light for the leafy vegetable to grow.
She knelt in the soft loamy soil, the dirt clinging to her fingers as she worked to plant the lettuce seedling.
The trees around her were proud and tall, their sturdy trunks providing a bit of shelter from the wind and the sunlight. She hummed softly to herself as she worked, the forest feeling very much alive around her.
Her hands were covered in dirt, her sleeves rolled up to reveal her toned forearms and biceps. She knelt on the soft forest floor, her fingers carefully planting small lettuce seedlings into the ground.
Thanks to her [Green Fingers] skill, the soil turned damp the moment she started digging, making it the perfect environment for the lettuce to grow in.
The air was heavy with the scent of leaves and damp earth, filling her nostrils with refreshing forest scents, the morning sun filtering through the trees and dappling the forest floor with small patches of light.
After the lettuce seeds were planted, Coco turned her attention to the radish seedlings.
She picked up one of the small radish bulbs, its smooth skin cool to the touch. Holding it gently, she used her fingers to break up the hard soil, creating a small hole just big enough for the bulb.
She tenderly and meticulously placed each little bulb into the soil, carefully dropping the radish into the hole, making sure it was planted at the proper depth, then she packed the soil around them with a careful touch, softly patting the earth down to keep them in place.
She repeated this process with each of the remaining radish bulbs, taking her time and being careful not to damage the delicate plants.
Her movements were slow and cautious, taking care to make sure each radish seed had enough space to grow into a healthy vegetable.
Once she was done, she took a moment to observe her work, satisfied with the lettuce and radish growing in their new home.
"Okay, the basil next." Coco said, standing up from the ground, her legs slightly numb from staying in the crouching position for longer than planned.
She repeated the process she did for the lettuce and radish, using her fingers to break up the soil, creating small holes for the basil seed before dropping a single basil seed into each hole, and covering it with soil.
She continued this process with half of the basil seeds, taking her time and being careful not to damage it.
She saved half of the basil seeds to take home for the four husbands, considering the benefits of the seed, she knows that it will work for them— they need to keep their beauty in exchange for Coco working for them.
"I mean, I’m only working so I can earn money for myself, to pay Coco Hughes’s debt and divorce the husbands. I’m sure that I will have to pay to divorce them just like how it was back on Earth." Coco said, speaking to herself.
"I also want to change my name.. I really love the name Coco Coison instead of Hughes.. Besides, my last name is the only thing I will have to remember my mother and sisters by." She muttered, her heart dropping to her stomach for a moment.
She shook her head, removing any memories or thoughts that could potentially make her cry. She focuses back on what she was doing, planting the seeds.
After the seeds had been planted on the soil, she used her hands to pat the soil over the basil seeds, pressing it down gently to ensure good soil contact for the seeds.
She didn’t waste any time and immediately went for the carrot seeds.
Coco picked up a carrot seed inside the pouch, her fingers gently handling the small, brownish-white sphere. Carefully and just like what she did to the other three, she dug a small hole in the soil using her fingers.
Once the hole was dug, she placed the carrot seed gently inside, making sure it was planted at the right depth and then she patted the soil over it, holding her hand over the area for a moment before moving on to spot to plant another seed.
Coco repeated the process of planting the seeds, poking a hole in the soil, placing the seed inside at the right depth, taking care to make sure it was placed properly.
When she’s done with the four types of seeds, with the pouches of basil seeds and carrot seeds still half full, she stretched her limbs and did a bit of exercise on the spot to wake her hamstrings.
By the time she was done planting, the sky was already high up in the blue sky, letting its warmth known to the living creatures down below.
As if on cue, Coco’s stomach let out a loud growl, reminding her that she still hasn’t eaten anything for breakfast.
However, as much as Coco needs to eat, she wants to have white rice and chicken— she’s craving for some meat, feeling tired of eating fruits, but does she really have a choice? Of course not.
Begrudgingly, Coco made her way back to where she left Lala, which was near the stream and the house she was building. She made a beeline to the water, crouching down and washing her hand on the running water.
She made sure the dirt in her skin and fingernails were gone before she walked towards the fruit trees Lala made for her.
Ugh.. Bananas again..? Coco thought to herself, plucking a yellow banana from the banana tree, peeling off its skin and putting it inside her mouth, biting down and chewing on it.
"I would kill for a fried chicken or fried rice right now.." Coco muttered, her stomach growling at the thought of the chicken and rice.
