Chapter 29: Shocked old man
Husband? Wife? Coco blinked owlishly and stared at the old man, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
What does he mean by wife? Did he marry a beta woman and not an omega one? If Coco remembered right.. A mediator can be a man and a woman who are the only ones who can house a child inside their body.
A beta or alpha woman, in her vocabulary, is the man and woman in this world while the omegas are the mediators.
However, a male mediator is more common than a female mediator, right? Zaque told her that when she first told him that she wasn’t Coco Hughes.
Aghhh.. This is hard. The black haired girl thought, the curiosity she’s currently feeling is killing her.
I want to know if his husband and wife are mediators or not so freaking bad.. Coco wanted to ask the old man for more information, but considering that would be rude, she held herself back and simply nodded her head at him, forcing a smile on her face.
"I’m glad to know that I cheered you up, sir." Coco stated, glancing at the sack of seeds, "As much as I want to stay, I need to go out before the sun comes up."
The old man perked up, as if he just realized something exciting and important, "Oh, goodness me! I’m sorry for keeping you here for so long, child. Let me just get what you need inside the store."
The old man straightened his back to the best of his ability and started to walk towards the door, but stopped in the doorway and turned back to her, "Just lettuce and radish, child?"
Coco shook her head to answer his question and said, "I would like to buy basil and carrots, too."
"A pouch of each plant costs one hundred silver coins, but a whole sack of each costs five hundred silver coins. What would you like to get?" The old man asked her, his hand touching his beard and rubbing it as he laid out the prices.
"A pouch each, please." Coco answered, she watched the old man nod his head and continue his way inside the store— closing the door behind him.
She let out a sigh, shifting the fruit to her other arm, grabbing her money pouch from her pocket, and bringing it out. After she brought it out, she took out a gold coin and put the pouch back in her pocket.
It wasn’t even that long since the old man walked inside the store when he walked out again, four pouches settled comfortably in his arms.
"It’s four hundred silver coins in total, child." The old man informed her, handing the pouches to her.
Coco lifted her left leg and placed the robe on her thigh then took each pouch, slipped them inside through the small opening of the tattered green robe as she balanced her weight on her other leg.
"Please hold on." Coco murmured under her breath, concentrating on the task at hand.
After slipping the pouches of seeds inside, she took out a couple raspberries and grapes. She brought it out, the rich color of the fruits shining against the light outside of the store, catching the old man’s attention.
"Have these." Coco held out the raspberries and grapes to his way.
"What?" The old man blinked.
"Take them? I have a lot somewhere and I’m sure you can eat something fruity to take a break from vegetables." Coco said, shaking the dangling fruits on her hand, urging the old man to take them from her.
The old man eyed the fruit for a moment, letting Coco dangle it in front of him like it was a treasure, he was reluctant to accept it, but when he saw Coco losing balance, he was quick to take it from her hand.
"You’re giving me all of.. This?" The old man asked, the expression on his face was unreadable, but it could also be because he was shocked.
Coco Hughes is giving her the fruits she had grown herself that sells for almost two gold coins— for free!
He had heard from Mrs. Tani tells people that she sold the same fruit to a nobleman from the main city and earned almost a hundred gold coins because she didn’t want to sell it!
She wanted to give the fruits to her wife, but the nobleman wanted it so badly that she had no choice, but to sell half of it to him.
If Coco decided to sell it to Mrs. Tani or to any nobility, she would have earned a hundred gold coins in a blink of an eye! How come she’s giving the fruits away for free? And for an old man like him?
"Don’t worry." Coco assured him, sensing that he was hesitant and probably thinking of something outrageous, "I said that I have a lot of that fruit, didn’t I? Giving you some wouldn’t burden me and it for sure shouldn’t burden you."
The old man’s eyes went wide in shock.
Coco wouldn’t be burdened if she gave away such nutritious and delicious fruit? Just how many fruits does she have for her to say that?! Wouldn’t she be losing profit if she gave them away for free?!
"Here." Coco held out a gold coin in the old man’s direction, "I don’t have any silver coins with me because I gave it to my husbands, but if you have something else other than seed that you sell then I would appreciate it if you’ll sell it to me."
The old man shakily accepted the gold coin, "I sell soap, essential oils, and tea.. Those you could use to calm one’s mind and strengthen their immune system at the same time."
"And how much for each? Does it have different prices for each essential oil, teas, and soap?"
"The essential oils cost ten silver coins at most, twenty silver coins for the soap, and twenty five silver coins for the tea."
