Chapter 201: A talk after the silence

Chapter 201: A talk after the silence

"Well, I’ll be going now." Coco announced, smiling at Zaque.

"Have a good day, Coco." The red haired mediator mumbled, watching as she opened the door and walked out.

Zaque waited for Coco to disappear in the distance before he closed the door, turning in his heels and his gaze landing on the three mediators sitting around the table.

The breakfast was quiet and tense after Coco said that she’ll go to the main city.

After watching Coco eat in silence and letting them be, they started eating— even though none of them had the appetite to finish their meal, they still ate the food and deep into their hearts, they knew that wasting the vegetables that they couldn’t afford before would eat them.

So, they sucked it up and didn’t leave anything on their plates.

Now that Coco had left the house, silence befell over them once again and all they could do is stare at the table.

"What are your thoughts about what Coco said?" Zaque asked, breaking the silence and narrowing his eyes towards his fellow mediators.

".. Nothing." Heiren spoke up, his voice still small, but loud enough for everyone to hear.

"Nothing?" Zaque frowned, his right eyebrow twitching in frustration as he ran a hand down his face, "Nothing? After all the things she had done for us even though we’re a complete stranger to her?"

"You could say that because she has been nothing, but nice to you." Alhai snapped, hissing the words out as he glared at Zaque.

"In the first place, our wife can’t lay a finger on you because what? You’re a son of a noble! Unlike the rest of us!" Alhai’s words stung Zaque where it hurts, his heart aching at how true the third husband’s words were.

The reason why Coco can’t hurt him was because Zaque is one of the sons of a Baron from the south— Baroness Hughes took him from his parents’ roof because they couldn’t pay off their debt.

However, even though Zaque acted as the payment, his parents still managed to rack more debts from the Baroness and ended up getting their title taken.

That doesn’t mean Zaque could be treated like trash though.

"Careful with your words, Alhai." Zaque warned, his tone firm as he returned the menacing glare the third husband gave him.

Alhai frowned, but didn’t say any rebuttal— not when Zaque looked like he was ready to flip the table upside down.

"To be frank, I know the three of you still don’t believe Coco isn’t the daughter of the Baroness we know." Zaque sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose, "But that’s only because the three of you refused to spend time with her."

"Tsk." A sound of someone clicking their tongue resonated in the room, "You spent half a day with her and that was enough to make you believe her nonsense?"

"Yes, Alhai." Zaque stated bluntly, "I don’t know about you, but from what I heard, she went to the neighboring village to get you the books that you were reading yesterday and Heiren even managed to get the book from the cougar, didn’t she?"

"What book?" Alhai raised an eyebrow and turned to Heiren, "And from the cougar? That’s impossible. He’s known for his horrendous requests."

"No.. Zaque’s right." Heiren mumbled and shook his head, "The book from your parents was in the cougar’s house because I asked him to get it.. But I didn’t have enough money to pay for the other half of the payment."

Alhai suddenly sat upright, his teal colored eyes went wide in surprise.

"So you asked that woman to pay for the other half?" Alhai asked, swallowing the lump forming in his throat while straightening his back.

".. Yes." Heiren answered truthfully, "Actually, I don’t know what they talked about.. They left me outside of the house while Coco dealt with him."

After all this time? Alhai thought, his lips quivering.

"That doesn’t change what I feel towards her." Alhai steeled himself and clenched his hands into a tight fist, shaking his head to get rid of the unwanted thoughts.

"Sure." Zaque turned away from Alhai and looked at Heiren, "I’ll be going with Coco to get a permit from the village chief, I’ll be going with her to the main city to take care of her needs."

"W.. What?" Heiren stammered out as the other mediators looked at Zaque in shock.

"I’m serious." Zaque stated and turned his head away from them, "I’m still mad at how Coco Hughes, our original wife, treated the four of us and I don’t think I’ll ever forgive her if she ever comes back."

The red haired mediator’s expression softened ever so slightly, his eyes landing on the oven that Coco bought for him. "But Coco Coison treated us the best she could— even though she’s a stranger and to be honest? I would ask her to put her baby inside me at this moment if I could."

"That’s absurd—"

"It is." Zaque snapped his attention at Alhai and cut him off, "It is absurd, but what can I do? I want her."

"Just what is wrong with you?!" Alhai stood up from his chair and slammed his hands on the table, "That Coco is our wife! Not someone who she claims to be! How can you just—"

"I heard the fairy once." Zaque had cut off Alhai once more when he raised his voice slightly, "I heard the fairy apologize to Coco Coison for killing her and she was mad, she was crying and was blaming herself."

"You heard the fairy speak? Why didn’t you say so before?" Quizen asked, his lips parting in surprise.

"Hearing the fairy said that and witnessing all the kindness that Coco Hughes can’t give to us.. I decided to trust her, to believe her words, to accept her." Zaque ignored Quizen’s question.

"So, I’ll go with her and take care of her." Zaque said, his tone firm and final.
