Chapter 87: CULINARY TESTS AND EXAMINATION
Chapter 87: CULINARY TESTS AND EXAMINATION
"This day is very satisfying." Aristia sighed happily.
For the rest of the ’advertisement’, she let Adeline do most of the talking. It was more subtle this time around. Adeline was very smart and knew what to say to attract their attention and interest, and also succeed in convincing them.
"I am considering signing up for the examination. Perhaps, I will pass and be hired." Adeline said with a wishful sigh.
"Sister, you can do it. I heard that the pay offered is really good." Owen said, looking at Adeline encouragingly.
"Pardon me, but may I ask what examination you are talking about?" A customer in the stall they were in asked curiously.
"Why, haven’t you heard?" Adeline asked dramatically with her hand on her mouth as if it was a great surprise that the other party had no idea about the examination. "Someone is hiring workers for their restaurant. The pay is really good. I heard that the person is quite wealthy."
Aristia smiled slightly, [Quite? Hehe.]
"Is that so?" Murmurs rang out in the stall.
"Of course. The examination will be held to choose those who can cook well and they will be hired." Adeline continued mysteriously.
"You are a lady, and so young. Do you think you will be hired?" Someone asked.
"I heard that all can come as long as they are or have passed the age of thirteen, and will have equal chances of being chosen. Anyway, I will make sure to do so." She said with a smile.
Aristia had instructed them to mention that all could try out for the job as long as they had reached the age thirteen.
The reason was because some children had to help out in supporting the family due to circumstances. Their parents could be sick and unable to do much to provide for them as much as they needed or they could have no one like Dorothy and Dahlia. She was just creating an opportunity for those with similar circumstances.
They didn’t need to know how to cook. They could be given other work like washing the dishes, helping to clean the restaurant, and helping to wash, cut and peel vegetables.
"I know you will definitely be chosen, big sister." Beatrix smiled brightly. She felt awkward, but she wanted to help her cousin.
Everybody was curious now. Even the stall owner was listening with keen interest.
"Miss, are you sure of this information?" The stall owner asked.
She was very much interested in what she had just heard. She wouldn’t mind closing down her business to go work in the restaurant if what the young lady said was true.
"Of course, I’m sure." Adeline nodded with conviction in reply to her question.
"When will the examination be held?" Another person asked.
"I heard that no information has been given regarding that yet. But, I will make sure to keep my ears open. I do not want to miss this opportunity. I have to get going now. Come," Adeline moved to stand, gesturing to Aristia and the rest.
They left the stall with satisfaction.
"How did I do Miss?" Adeline asked, looking at Aristia hopefully.
[Uh...] Adeline’s expectant expression reminded her of a puppy.
She shook the image off before replying.
"You did well, Linny." She didn’t hold back her praise. "You did very well." She hadn’t known Adeline was such a great actress.
This was a method she came up with to spread the news faster and draw contestants. Soon, news would spread round the capital and people would troop in to sign up.
"So, where are we going now?" Serina asked. She hadn’t gotten the chance to say anything back at the stall.
"Last stop. The Decker Twins." Aristia said, and they headed in the direction of the twins’ stall.
"Hello Fiona, hello Finn." Adeline greeted when they arrived at the Twins’ stall.
On hearing Adeline’s voice, Finn turned toward them and beamed a bright smile.
"Miss Adeline. It’s such a pleasant surprise to see you here again. How do you do?" He asked and approached her. He was a bit surprised to see her there twice in the same day, but he wasn’t complaining.
"Yes, Mister Decker. I am doing fine. Thank you for asking." Adeline replied.
"I’ve told you not to call me Mister Decker, Miss Adeline. It makes me feel old." Finn complained.
"You’re not old." Adeline’s words came out a bit quicker than she had intended. Then, she quickly added.
"I-I mean, you’re still quite young, Mister Finn."
Aristia chuckled. This was new for her; seeing Adeline act so flustered.
Finn had taken a fancy to Adeline, ever since the first time they met. Aristia hadn’t had time to ask Adeline about how she felt about him. She actually had no objections to Adeline getting married. Finn was a decent guy. She didn’t know if his feelings were serious though.
Fiona turned to Aristia with a knowing smile, "Your aunt seems to be occupied. What would you like?"
"We don’t want to buy meat." Aristia corrected. "I have something to discuss with you and Finn."
Fiona was amused at the serious expression on her face. Nevertheless, she held back her smile.
"Alright. Come on in." She gestured at the inside of the stall.
The stall was quite small, needless to say. The seven of them stood inside with almost no space left. Adeline followed them inside when she noticed them entering and Finn followed after.
"What did you want to talk to us about?" Fiona asked.
"If you were given an opportunity to work in a better place, would you take it?" Adeline asked with seriousness and a hint of determination. She had to do her best to help her princess.
The twins took a moment to think. "Yes... But, why are you suddenly asking this, Miss Adeline?" Fiona asked, feeling perplexed.
"I am opening a restaurant, and I need cooks. So, I want to ask you and Finn to work for me." Aristia explained.
The twins were left stunned. "You... are opening a restaurant?" Finn asked. It sounded like a joke.
How could she, a little girl, be opening a restaurant? It sounded like a joke and was even a little ridiculous.
Finn and Fioa burst into laughter, and Finn wiped a few tears from the corner of his eyes.
"You can’t be serious.."
They stopped laughing when they saw that no one was laughing along and there was no indication of it being a joke.
"Wait. You’re serious?" Finn asked.
"Very much so," Serina nodded, finally getting a chance to say something.
Staring at all of them, the Decker Twins were suddenly enlightened. Aris’ parents were opening a restaurant and were searching for workers, so the children wanted to help out by finding workers for them. They suddenly felt like they understood.
"So it’s like that. We understand." Finn nodded, already taking his explanation.
"When are we needed to come to the restaurant?" Fiona asked.
"Soon. Before that, there will be an examination to gauge the candidates’ cooking skills and abilities. Whoever passes will be taken and whoever doesn’t will be eliminated." Owen explained.
[Or given another role.] Aristia thought.
Finn and Fiona were surprised. "We will definitely come." Finn uttered, glancing at Adeline. "But where is the restaurant? And where will the examination be held?"
"When the time comes, we will reveal the location." Aristia revealed in a secretive manner.
It made the Decker Twins chuckle. These children were very cute.
"Wait, what about your other sister. Was it Alice?" Fiona asked, noticing that they were all here apart from the girl with them the night they had attended the festival.
[Alice? She’s asking about Alicia Eldridge.] Arisria’s eyes flashed with recognition.
But Alicia Eldridge could not come with them as she wasn’t her sister as she had lied about. She also wouldn’t risk exposing her secret by bringing her with her.
Her eyes snapped up to Fiona. "Alice couldn’t come out to play today."
"I see," Fiona hummed, not doubting her words.
"Well, that’s all we wanted to talk about. Goodbye Finn and Fiona." Aristia said, standing up. She didn’t want to stay longer and risk Fiona or Finn asking questions.
"Ah, you’re leaving so soon?" Fiona asked helplessly. "Alright, goodbye. Just make sure to visit sometime."
"We will."
"Goodbye, children. Goodbye, Miss Adeline. I look forward to the next time we meet." Finn smiled charmingly.
Adeline only nodded, her eyes now fixed on Aristia.
[Oh no, Linny. If you keep focusing on me like that, don’t you plan to get married?] Aristia almost facepalmed as they left the vicinity of the triplets stall.
"Today was very satisfying." She said with a smile on her face as they headed back in the direction of the place carriage had been parked. "Have I said that before?" She asked.
"You have." Serina said with a chuckle.
"It shows just how satisfied you are with today." Beatrix added with a small laugh.
Aristia chuckled in reply and looked out of the window. It was nearing dusk and the sun was beginning to set. She leaned back in the soft leather seat of the carriage and started to think about where the examination would be held.
[I need the Grand Duke’s help for that. I don’t have much influence now.]
"I had fun." Serina said.
"Me too." Beatrix voiced her agreement.
"I’m glad you both did," Aristia smiled.
The rest of the ride back to the palace was completed in silence.
When they arrived, Aristia went to search for Wilson. Her mother was with her grandmother, Alaric and Ivan were in the stables. Aristia was beginning to think they wanted to live there.
Rowaine and Fedor were in their chambers. She didn’t even want to think about what could be happening.
Her feet carried her to one of the studies in the palace; the king’s personal study.
A butler was standing in front of the door.
