Chapter 77: NOT FITTING TO APPEAR IN THE BANQUET

"Viscountess Hemsworth," Charlotte acknowledged with a curt nod, watching her.

She hadn’t come into much contact with the younger woman and had no personal impression of the latter.

Vasily, on the other hand, smiled and began to make small talk with the Marchioness. She felt sympathy for the lady in front of her. Especially seeing her standing alone. She was not new to the other noble ladies tendency to rub salt in each other’s wounds. That was, after all, the hidden, dark side of the nobility.

She had no idea how she would feel if Ross, her husband, did the same to her. Probably devastated. Well, that was because she loved the Viscount. She had no idea if the Marchioness loved the Marquis or not.

Minutes later, another announcement was heard. This time, drawing the attention of all the aristocrats present.

The servant announced the presence of the royal family into the garden.

As was the norm, all conversation ceased and all stopped what they were doing and turned towards the direction of the entrance and either bowed or curtsied to the Royal family according to their gender.

"Greetings to the Family blessed by the Lord Nerin, the Royal Family of Amberale. May the blessings of Lord Nerin continue to be bestowed upon You."

"You may rise," King Fedor said, voice brimming with command and power.

"Let’s go greet your grandparents." Catherine told her children, leading her children deeper into the garden.

[My grandparents? From mother’s side of the family.] Aristia thought.

They walked toward the spot the Anton family was in.

"Mother, Father." Catherine called out.

"Cath, my darling daughter." Claire Anton smiled, moving forward to embrace her daughter.

"How have you been? I hope he has been treating you well?" A man asked. It was Edgar Anton. He was referring to Wilson.

"Yes, Mother and Father." Catherine replied.

[These... are my... Grandparents?!!!!] Aristia was almost finding it difficult to believe.

Grandma Claire forty four years old, one year younger than Melissa. She was beautiful too. Grandpa Edgar himself was not bad at all. He had a type of mature handsomeness at fifty years of age.

"As expected, they’re very beautiful." She unconsciously whispered out.

[They have to be beautiful to give birth to beautiful people like Catherine and Maxim.]

"Oh, thank you, Tia." Grandma Claire laughed heartily. Her granddaughter was so sweet.

Aristia was stunned. She didn’t know they had overheard her. Nevertheless, she curtsied. "Greetings, Grandma. Greetings, Grandpa."

"Oh ho. I see Tia is doing well in her etiquette class. But, there’s no need to be so formal with Grandpa." Grandpa Edgar smiled and caressed her head lovingly.

"And Allie, my boy." Edgar picked Alaric in his arms, not caring about the gazes of other nobles. The Antons were the nobles with the highest status directly after the royal family. They were also the greatest supporter of the royal family. None of those present dared to offend them.

"I’m fine, Grandpa." Alaric replied with a smile.

After exchanging greetings, the children seperated from the parents. Alaric went to find Liam, and Aristia went to Serina and Beatrix who were still with the King and Queen as nobles swarmed around raining praises.

There were even some pushing their children forward in a bid for the little ones to form friendships with the royal children in order to have a connection with them and elevate their status.

When they saw Aristia and Alaric come towards them, the royal children seperated from their parents and headed deeper into the garden towards the group of children they had a good relationship with.

When the surrounding noble children saw that they had arrived at the area of the garden, they headed toward them. They couldn’t wait for the princes and princesses to come to them. They had to be the ones to go to them.

Aristia couldn’t help but be thankful that she had transmigrated into the book with the status of princess. She couldn’t imagine always having to bow or curtsey, and be mindful of her words and actions towards them.

"Princesses, you’re here." Paige Kiran said with a smile and they nodded in acknowledgement.

Aristia looked around and her gaze stopped at Wade. She had told Ivan and Liam to take the initiative to invite Wade to their group. She wondered why Liam had not come since they had arrived earlier.

It was strange for Wade, who was a boy, to always be in the midst of girls. There was nothing wrong from a normal standpoint especially since he was still a child, but the nobles were calculative creatures and liked to find fault in every action.

Even though they were quite a distance away from the adults and they probably wouldn’t notice, if they did, they would start to say that the child was uncouth and uneducated, then they would mention his lowly birth and upbringing and attribute it to his birth.

They could even call him a manwhore, saying he inherited it from his whore of a mother. Aristia was disgusted.

Truly. Really. Calculative.

Just as she had that thought, a voice sounded out in a snarky tone. "Why is the illegitimate son of the Marquis here?"

The children turned around to see the newcomer. There was a small group of boys in front of them. The one in front who seemed to be the leader was the one who had spoken earlier.

He bowed, "Princesses,"

The other children apart from Wade and the princesses greeted with bows or curtseys, "Young Master Ian."

However, Aristia didn’t reply.

[Brass coloured hair and yellow eyes. His features look familiar. Ian Winston. Just like that woman with the rotten vegetable on her head. And that question...] Aristia thought. At first glance, there was nothing wrong with it, but if one listened to the tone, they would find a hint of mockery.

Even his words ’illegitimate son’ wasn’t wrong because it was the truth. But him saying it to the face of Wade was another matter, after all, everyone knew it. There wasn’t any need to repeat it.

It also seemed as if he was asking why the Marquis’ son was in the banquet, and not why he was in their group. As if his status as an illegitimate son made him unfitting to appear in the banquet.

Ian Winston continued with mock surprise, holding his hand to his mouth as if he had unintentionally misspoken. "Ah! My apologies. I seem to have forgotten that you just entered nobility. Hence, it is understandable that you are not well educated in etiquette."

Ian was from a Duke family, which was higher than Wade who was from a Marquis family. Wade should have greeted him since he was lower in rank.

Someone else spoke up. "You’re too kind, brother Ian. Six months is enough to learn etiquette. We should not expect much. A leopard cannot change its spots." He scoffed.

He looked like Ian Winston’s lackey. He had strawberry blond hair and light green eyes. He was Zachary Splane, second son of Earl Cedric and Countess Eleanor Splane.

Wasn’t he saying that Wade couldn’t truly fit into nobility because of his lowly birth?

Aristia was speechless. Were children so sharp with words nowadays?

"Don’t say that. Maybe he can. We don’t know for sure and should not assume..." Ian Winston trailed off, acting like he was reprimanding Zachary Splane and speaking up for Wade.

Aristia narrowed her eyes at him. Were children so pretentious? It was a bit similar to the aristocrat children in her world. Then, she chuckled.

"As expected. The apple does not fall too far away from the tree."

The children turned to her. Ian Winston and Zachary Splane smiled with a proud look. They thought the princess was agreeing to their words. Who didn’t know what the third princess was capable of? The bastard boy would surely leave in tears.

"That’s right princess, how—" Zachary Splane began when he was caught off.

"Did Countess Splane not educate her child well?" Aristia cut him off with a cold smile.

"Pardon?" Zachary Splane could only utter in confusion. Not only him, but even the surrounding children were surprised and confused.

"The nobility has a system of hierarchy. You have disregarded that hierachy. Are you saying that my ancestors made a mistake?" She asked coldly.

She continued, not giving him a chance to speak. "Wade Oswalt, though illegitimate, is still the son of the Marquis Oswalt. As the son of a Marquis, he is higher in status than you, the son of a Count. Yet, you dare to speak to him in such a manner? The Marquis was the one to bring him to the banquet. Is that not enough to indicate that he has accepted him?"

The surrounding children were enlightened. That was true. The Marquis had brought Wade to the banquet. Did that not mean that he had indirectly acknowledged him? The boy had a higher status than most of them.

Aristia chose Zachary Splane who was lower in status. She used him as an example to shut the mouths of the other children who might want to intimidate Wade in order to curry favor.

But for Ian Winston, he was the son of Duke Winston and was higher in status that Wade so she would use a different tactic. She knew how to deal with him.

"My father, the king, has not said anything about this. Could it be that you want to make the decision for my father?"

Before Aristia could say anything, Serina already spoke. She was referring to Ian Winston. She hadn’t said anything before, but after Aristia had spoken, she felt it made a lot of sense. Hence, she also spoke up.

She was smart enough to catch up with what Aristia wanted to do.

Both Ian Winston and Zachary Splane turned pale in fright. How did the situation change?

"T-That’s not what we meant." They stammered out fearfully.

The third princess was known for being painfully blunt. How come it hurt more when she spoke indirectly?

"What’s going on here?" Another voice asked.
