Chapter 74: KNOWING THE SITUATION

The next day...

"Thank you, Linny." Aristia said to Adeline as the latter placed down the hair brush on the dressing table.

Adeline seemed calmer than the previous night. If anything, she gave off an air of satisfaction.

Aristia was just glad she was back to her normal self.

All of a sudden, the door was pushed open.

"Tia!"

Aristia turned around to see Beatrix and Serina rushing into her room, actually forgetting etiquette. She managed to catch sight of their maids, Rosalind and Sienna waiting outside the room before the door closed.

"What is it? Did something happen?" She asked worriedly. But judging from the wide smiles on their faces and the excitement oozing off them in large waves, she didn’t think it was something to worry about.

"Mama and Papa said we would be allowed to leave the palace." Serina said excitedly, coming to hold her hands in hers.

"Wow, really?!" Aristia asked rhetorically. "When?"

"Yesternight. After we had retired to our bedrooms." Beatrix said happily.

"Well, that’s great news." Aristia was genuinely happy for them.

"It is. It really is." Serina bobbed her head.

"Then, I have a lot of places to show you." Aristia said. They hadn’t gotten the chance the evening before because of the time and situation. She paused, "Wait... What’s the condition?" There had to be a condition.

And just as she had thought, she was indeed correct.

"We’ll take the guards with us, always." Beatrix said.

Aristia nodded, "That’s normal."

It was just like the modern world where people of wealth, status, influence and power went out with bodyguards for their own safety and protection.

Nevertheless, it was good that the King and Queen had agreed. Because now, they could go wherever they wanted and for as long as they wished.

"And we were given new maids," Serina said.

"What about Rosalind and Sienna?" Aristia asked, confused. Had the king and queen punished the maids by removing them as their children’s maids?

"They’re still our maids. Papa says if we don’t take guards with us, we have to take the new maids with us always." Beatrix replied with a shrug.

"Oh, okay."

"So, what are we doing this morning?" Beatrix asked.

"Maybe we can make snacks." Serina said. "Popcorn."

"I have something else in mind." Aristia said.

"Is it tarts?" Beatrix asked.

Aristia shook her head, "You’ll see. Have you ever tried doughnuts, or chicken nuggets?"

"No, we haven’t even heard of it." Beatrix said in anticipation.

"Then let’s go. I made it for Mama, Papa and Al back at home. You’ll love it." Aristia said as she walked forward. "Come with me, Linny."

"Something new!" Beatrix and Serina’s eyes lit up.

They wasted no time in leaving the room.

As they exited the room, Aristia noticed two other ladies standing a few feet away from where Rosalind and Sienna stood.

Aristia’s steps almost faltered.

These maids... gave off a strange air.

[Just like Adeline.] Aristia thought.

There was nothing wrong with the maids at first glance, but Aristia couldn’t brush off the feeling that there was something off with them.

She brushed it off and continued her steps to the kitchen.

In the kitchen, the same maid who had assisted them the last time came over to them. However, this time, she was almost pushed aside by another maid.

She managed to keep her balance before bowing, "Princesses, is there anything you need? I’m the one who helped you last time." She said, putting emphasis on the last sentence, eying the maid who had tried to replace her warily.

"Yes. Your assistance, as usual. We want to use the kitchen again." Aristia said.

The maid nodded. The princess seemed to have developed an interest in cooking. It would fade in a few years, after she grew older, she thought. The rest of the servants thought the same.

Remembering something, Aristia asked. "What is your name?"

"Uh?" The maid was stunned at the sudden question about herself, then she recovered. "M-my name is O-odelia."

"Okay, Odelia." Aristia nodded. Then, she proceeded to instruct her on ingredients to prepare and what to do.

In no time, they were done. "Just in time for breakfast." Aristia smiled.

The kitchen servants were peeping curiously while they prepared breakfast for the members of the royal family. They wanted to see what new dish the princesses were making.

They salivated whenever they recalled the taste of the popped corn, and the mashed avocados and fried potatoes they later found out the princess called guacamole and chips. They, however, would not dare to remake the dish without permission.

"Ah. It’s delicious." Serina exclaimed.

Beatrix nodded in agreement, her eyes shining.

"I hope you have learnt it, Odelia." Aristia asked the maid.

They had made just enough doughnuts and chicken nuggets to go around among the royal family members and still have leftovers. So, as she had done the last time, she asked for some to be distributed to the servants in the kitchen.

She also didn’t forget to save some for the three personal maids with them, since the new maids were nowhere to be found.

"Ah? Oh, yes, Princess." Odelia nodded. "But, what is this dish called, princess?"

"This round dish with a hole in the middle is called a doughnut, and this small dish made with chicken is called chicken nugget." Aristia nodded. "I want the chicken nuggets and doughnuts to be made for the banquet this evening."

The maid nodded quickly before pausing. The princess wanted this snack to be made for the banquet this evening. She would have to inform the queen of the princess’s intention ask for permission.

Adeline, Rosalind and Sienna carried the tray containing the snacks they had prepared.

It was time for breakfast. Everyone gathered around the dining table. The door opened and a row of maids came in carrying trays of food which they laid on the table.

"Grandmother, we made another snack." Serina said when they had all settled down in the dining room.

"Oh? This morning?" Grandma Melissa asked, surprised. "What other delicious snacks have my granddaughters prepared this time? Is it tart or popped corn?"

"No. It isn’t any of those." Beatrix shook her head.

This piqued the ladies’ curiousity.

"Then what is it?" Rowaine asked.

Aristia gestured and Adeline walked forward and lifted the lid off the dishes. Then, the maids were dismissed to give the family some privacy.

"Oh! It’s chicken nuggets and doughnuts." Alaric said, pointing at the snacks.

"How did you know this, Allie?" Melissa asked.

"Tia made this snack when we had a picnic. It’s really delicious." He smiled.

Aristia smiled at Alaric. He hadn’t really been around her these past few days as he was busy with Ivan in the stables. She couldn’t wait for him to find his daemon.

"Why, I wouldn’t doubt that." Melissa looked at Catherine and the look on her face told her that Alaric was correct. She nodded in understanding.

While she was thinking about this, the others were more curious about something else.

"What’s a picnic?" Melvin inquired.

Aristia was too lazy to explain, but thankfully, Catherine and Alaric took the initiative to explain.

Nobody asked where Aristia learnt about the picnic. They all knew she was very smart and was even reading about other countries’ cuisines. It wasn’t hard to encounter something such as a picnic when reading those books.

"My, you’ve done it again, Tia. All the snacks you girls make are delicious." Rowaine chuckled as she took a bite of the chocolate coated doughnut.

The girls smiled.

"Hmm... I didn’t doubt that at all." Melvin said as he chewed the chicken nugget in his mouth.

Everyone was eager to have a taste and soon enough, the bowls were empty. The snacks were made in little amounts because it wouldn’t replace the breakfast on the table.

"Aunt, I told the kitchen maid to prepare chicken nuggets and tarts for the banquet." Aristia said in the middle of the breakfast they were having.

"Why, that’s a marvelous idea." Rowaine exclaimed, accepting the idea immediately. "I have no doubt the guests will enjoy it."

"I also plan to make it a dish in my restaurant," Aristia explained.

She had a plan. The banquet would be the first place the nobles would try these dishes. It would help create a longing for these dishes, knowing that they had no recipe for their chefs to remake and no knowledge of its origin.

Then, when the restaurant opened business, it would contribute in garnering interest.

"That is excellent." Fedor smiled. He understood her intention. He wondered how such a little girl could possess such intelligence and wit.

After breakfast, Aristia stopped Wilson.

"Papa, if you have a minute, I have something to talk to you about."

Wilson stopped in his steps. "Tia, I always have time for you." He continued, "What is it you want to talk to me about?"

Aristia scanned her eyes around the dining room at the palace staff.

"Let’s take this conversation to the study?" Wilson suggested.

Aristia nodded and they started towards the direction of the study.

"Could you also inform Grandpa and Uncle? It’s about the famine." She asked Wilson and he nodded.

Aristia kept quiet. Wilson seemed to be communicating with his brother and father mentally, through their daemons.

The two walked together, a grown man and a little girl. They walked side-by-side towards the study in silence.

As they opened the door to the study, Aristia found that Melvin and Fedor had arrived. Not only that, even Ivan was there.

It seemed Ivan was brought along because he was the Crown Prince and had to know about matters concerning the kingdom. It was an early training for him to get used to this.

They sat down and one of the palace butlers, a strict looking old man, served them tea.

"I wanted to know how the preparation for the famine is going," Aristia turned to her father.
