Chapter 59: A FANCY NAME FOR POTATOES AND AVOCADOS

The princesses and their mothers were left alone in the drawing room. The Queen and Grand Duchess left first, while the princesses were left standing in front of the door to the room.

"Is Captain Hugh always that strict during training?" Serina asked as they left, bringing up the training in the morning.

Aristia shrugged.

"That’s so mean. How can he let yo— no, tell you to do that?" Serina asked dumbfoundedly, then her tone turned bewildered. "And how are you even able to keep up with his training? I can’t even imagine going through that... that horror." Serina shivered. He showed no mercy at all.

"I’m more or less used to it. It’s not as bad as it seems," Aristia explained with a chuckled. Serina said it like it was something evil. "Besides, I like that Captain Hugh is pushing my limits."

"Ugh! I will never understand you." Serina said.

Aristia exchanged glances with Beatrix and they both laughed.

"Anyone up for some snacks?" Aristia asked.

Serina’s eyes lit up and she immediately linked her arms with hers. "Yes, please. What are we making? Popcorn or something else?"

Aristia chuckled. "I understand you," she said, emphasizing the words. They all burst into laughter, heading directly to the kitchen.

Adeline and the princesses’ personal maids were not in the palace as they had been sent on an errand.

When they entered the kitchen, the maid from earlier spotted them immediately and rushed right up to them.

"Princesses, what would you like to make today? I’d be very happy to assist you," she said cheerfully with a wide smile plastered on her face. Her gaze shifted to Aristia, waiting for a response.

Aristia shook her head at her enthusiasm.

The other servants glanced at the maid disdainfully. She was too sharp! They wished they had noticed the princess entering the kitchen first.

Aristia thought for a while, then said, "I need potatoes."

"There’s potatoes in the kitchen." The maid nodded eagerly. "Is there anything else you’d need, princess?"

The last time the third princess asked for corn, she had thought she wanted to make corn pudding, only for her to make a completely unknown, but surprisingly delicious food.

Now, she couldn’t wait to see what the princess wanted to make now.

"Yes, do you have avocados?" Aristia asked.

"Yes, yes, we do. There are avocados in the kitchen," the maid bobbed her head like a chicken pecking rice.

Potatoes and avocados? She was even more curious now.

So was the rest of the kitchen. So, as Aristia followed the maid to the side room, the kitchen erupted in discussions.

"I wonder what the third princess wants to make now?"

"I want to have a taste too. Last time I tasted the one she gave Odelia, I couldn’t get it off my mind."

"Who knew the princess had such a talent in cooking?"

"Get back to work with your mouths closed. Do you want to get spittle into the food!" The head chef chastised, causing the gossiping servants to snap their mouths close.

The maid called Odelia came out carrying a basket of potatoes and ripe avocados.

Immediately, Aristia got to work. Peeling potatoes, washing potatoes, cutting potatoes in thin slices, and soaking potatoes in water, the maid worked very carefully.

"Is this all?" Serina asked.

"Oh, we aren’t anywhere near done." Aristia said.

Then, they got to peeling avocados, slicing avocados, mashing avocados, adding sliced onions and tomatoes, a bit of salt, pepper and lemon juice.

When it was time to fry the potatoes, the whole kitchen staff gathered around. This time, the pan was left open. They watched the sizzling oil as the thinly sliced potatoes were poured into the oil.

The kitchen staff watched with bated breath, wondering if the potatoes would pop just like the corn.

However, what they expected did not happen. Instead, the potatoes turned hard and crispy, with a light golden brown colour.

When the maid scooped them out into a bowl, Aristia sprinkled them with salt and ground pepper and put one into her mouth.

[Mmm... my guacamole and chips recipe. Too bad I can’t chill the guacamole because there’s no fridge here.] She thought as the second batch of potatoes fried.

They had made four bowls of chips, and three bowls of guacamole.

She took a bowl of guacamole, and just like before, she scooped some for the maid who had helped them. She did the same with the chips. She also scooped some more into another bowl.

"Give this to Owen," she instructed another maid. Owen was mostly busy ever since they came to the palace, training with the royal guards.

The maid nodded and collected the bowl from her, then left immediately to do as told. They had been told that Owen was a relative from Catherine’s side and treated him with the respect befitting someone of status.

Owen dressed richly enough and was treated well enough that there wouldn’t be any doubt as to if he belonged to aristocracy.

The maid that had been helping them put the other bowls in the tray and followed them out of the kitchen.

Alaric and Ivan were in the stables, but when Alaric heard that Aristia had been in the kitchen, he ditched Shadowfax and rushed over.

"Tia," he found his sister outside the palace, in the garden.

A few maids had set up a long table in the garden, and bowls were put on it. They scooped guacamole and chips into smaller plates on the table.

"Oh, Al. You’re back from the stables. I was just about to send a servant to call you." Aristia smiled.

"What did you make?" Alaric asked curiously, looking into the bowls. It was something he had never seen before.

"It’s called guacamole and chips," she said, pointing at each one.

[Just a fancy name for mashed avocados and fried thinly sliced potatoes.]

"You didn’t call me to help you," Alaric complained, pouting his lips.

"Oh, I’m so sorry, Al." Aristia apologized. "I thought you’d want to spend more time in the stables. With Shadowfax." She hadn’t meant for it to sound so sour, neither had she meant for it to sound jealous.

Wait, was she jealous of Shadowfax? An animal?

An animal?!!

[Haaa... That’s not possible.] She scoffed.

The adults entered the garden one after another and took their seats. The servants had informed them of the princesses’ visit to the kitchen, and the new, unfamiliar dish they had made.

"Tia, you made this?" Melissa asked.

"We did," Aristia said, glancing at the green dish and golden brown dish.

[Well, I tried my best.]

She explained, "You take this, called a chip, and dip it into this, called a guacamole." She demonstrated.

"Well," Fedor said with a chuckle. "Why don’t we have a taste?"

He took a chip and did as told. The chip produced a crunch sound as it came in contact with his teeth.

"Where’d you learn to make this?" He asked.

"I read about it. It’s a dish native to another kingdom. You can also put it on bread or baked potatoes." Aristia said simply.

She received a lot of impressed nods, not only was she excelling in her classes, but she also read broadly.

’And she’s just five years old,’ they thought.

After the snack, the family seperated. Adeline was back with the princesses’ maids.

"Princess, we’ve gotten what you requested." Adeline said.

"Great," Aristia said with a smile on her face, scanning the palace walls.

Time passed by quickly and soon, it was the first day of the three-day banquet.

The banquet would be held in the evening in the banquet hall of the main wing of the palace. There was a lot of preparation going on in the royal palace as servants moved back and forth in final preparation for the banquet.

Weeks earlier, madam Grace had gotten the dresses made for the females of the royal family to wear to the banquet.

The capital was filled with people setting up stalls and hanging decorations, lighting up the streets to convey their joy for the nationwide event.

There was a lot of hustle and bustle outside the palace, but the palace remained mostly calm.

The females of the royal family were drinking tea in a pavilion in the main garden of the royal palace. The children’s classes had been cancelled beforehand so that they could thoroughly enjoy the celebration.

"My, these are really delicious." Melissa said as she cut a piece of the lemon tart in her plate with her fork and put it in her mouth. "It seems Tia has gotten the interest to cook from you, Catherine."

Even now, Melissa showed no disdain or disapproval that her daughter in-law and granddaughter entered into the kitchen with the purpose of cooking.

Catherine laughed heartily. She wondered how her daughter could cook dishes to be so delicious. Did she really get it from her? Well, there was no other explanation for that.

"Indeed," Rowaine said. "I find it hard to believe that they made this." She pointed at her plate, referring to the joint effort of Serina, Beatrix and Aristia in making the dish before her. "What did you say this is called again, Tia?"

"It is called tart, aunt." Aristia replied with a smile as she took a sip of her tea.

[One of my favorites. Tarts, I mean, not the tea.]

"Yes, tart. Strawberry tart." Rowaine nodded her head. "I must say, it seems other Kingdoms have more dishes than Amberale."

Aristia had told them that she had gotten the recipes from books about other Kingdoms.

"It seems so, and Tia is quite good at creating new recipes." Melissa chuckled.

They enjoyed their tea in comfortable silence.
