Chapter 164: A STRONG POSSESSIVENESS

Charlotte hummed softly to herself as she embroidered on a handkerchief.

These days, she had been in a much better mood— at least she wasn’t sitting in her room depressed anymore.

"Sigh. The sky is not very bright today. I—"

Bang!

All of a sudden, the door was pushed open forcefully and a loud bang echoed.

The embroidery needle pricked her hand and a drop of blood showed.

Her eyes trailed up from her finger to see who had barged in so rudely.

’Who...’ her thoughts trailed off when her eyes landed on the perpetuator.

She became filled with surprised. Why had he come to her room? And in such manner.

George stormed in coldly. The door closed behind him with a bang.

He stared at his wife with a burning anger. "You went to her majesty to seek a divorce?" He asked the burning question.

Charlotte’s expression changed to one of understanding. ’Oh, so he found out’.

She slowly put away the half embroidered handkerchief and faced him fully. Her face remained calm.

"I asked a question, Charlotte, and I expect an answer." He gritted out.

"Isn’t that what you want?"

"What?" George didn’t expect her to return his question with a question of her own. She asked him a question instead of answering his.

"Ever since we became husband and wife, I am the only one who bothered to act like one. I tried even when you acted coldly." Charlotte stared straight at him and uttered the words, "Let’s get a divorce, George."

"What are you saying, Charlotte?" George was caught off guard by her words.

Charlotte scoffed. Was he really asking her that? She felt angry at the thought.

"I am saying that I am tired. I will no longer try so hard. I will not continue to waste so much effort on something so fruitless. Seven years... I tried to make you look at me of your own will, but the only thing I received was coldness!"

Charlotte yelled, leaving George stunned. He hadn’t ever seen or heard her yell.

"I was new to nobility. I didn’t know how to deal with the scheming. You left me alone without a care. I was alone with no one I knew to talk to. I was constantly being surrounded and ridiculed by those... snakes hiding under false pretenses!" She hissed bitterly at the end.

Charlotte seemed to have had enough. Her chest heaved. It was like all the feelings hidden deep in her heart had been forcefully released, bursting out from the bottle she had used to keep it in.

"I have had enough. I am tired of loving you, and I am tired of wishing and waiting for you to love me. Of hoping that you will finally look at me." Her voice had lowered. After releasing all of her pent up feelings, she couldn’t help the feeling of being pathetic that washed through her.

Had she just told him her feelings? The tears threatened to fall.

She didn’t want to continue like this anymore. She should have known that there was no future for her and George. The seeming but shallow bond shared between them at the beginning was all because of her hard work all these years— their bond as husband and wife was just her struggling to live like one. She had thought that he would warm up to her eventually, but time had proved her wrong.

George just stood there, shocked. He was speechless and his brain was having a hard time understanding those words. Charlotte loved him. She had admitted it.

His mind went back to when she had first found out about Wade. Her reaction... that was because she loved him?

That day, he had gone to talk to her immediately he saw her return inside the mansion without a word, instructing the Butler to take care of the child until he returned.

He went to their bedroom and saw Charlotte on the bed. Her shoulders shook constantly and George realized she was crying.

He’d sat on the bed, unable to look her in the eyes, and apologized, which was uncommon as it was well-known that most noblemen kept mistresses regardless of their wives.

He tried to explain what happened, but she didn’t listen, instead she asked him to leave. She was too emotional that she couldn’t bring herself to do so even if she wanted to.

After that, she began to ignore and avoid both he and his child. He had thought she was angry because of the other nobles finding out and her reputation being ruined.

Never would he have thought that his wife was like that because she had feelings for him and was feeling hurt and betrayed.

"Please, leave." Charlotte turned away from him so that he wouldn’t see the tears, snapping him out of his thoughts.

"Charlotte, I—" George finally found his ability to speak, moving closer to her. His initial anger had long faded away. He wanted to wipe her tears away, but Charlotte swatted his hand away.

"Enough, George! I know that you never wanted this marriage. Grandfather and grandfather Bertram never should have forced you into something you didn’t want. But it was my fault for still—"

"That is not true." George denied, leaving Charlotte staring at him in stunned confusion. She knew the answer. Why bother deny it? She sighed and looked away.

George pleaded, "Charlotte, please do not ask for a divorce."

"I cannot give you a child." Her husband had been intimate with another woman. It made her feel as if she wasn’t enough.

Anytime she thought about it, it made her heart clench in pain and her tears fall.

Anytime she saw her husband’s child, she was reminded of the fact that she wasn’t the one who had conceived the child. It made her feel as though she wasn’t capable of doing the basic thing her fellow women were doing. It seemed to constantly make it clear to her and everyone that she was the problem.

"I do not care." George protested.

"Because you already have an heir." Charlotte objected. "That is why you say that. I am not needed—"

"It’s because I love you, Charlotte!" George said strongly, his voice high but not in a yell.

"W-what?" Charlotte’s eyes widened from his words and her eyelashes trembled uncontrollably.

"I love you, Charlotte. I am sorry I took so long to realize it. I-I just... have never experienced these feelings and—"

"Ha!" Charlotte let out a laugh filled with scorn for herself and her husband. "You cannot say anything just to stop me from getting a divorce. I will leave Amberale and return to my mother’s kingdom after the divorce. Then, you will be able to take whichever noblewoman you desire as a bride. The ladies would jump at the idea. Whoever she is, she can birth you a hundred babies."

She let out a laugh filled with self-deprecation. She was too stupid to think the marriage would work out.

She never should have gotten married to George. She should have listened to her brothers. She had been too blinded by her feelings.

Maybe she would have found someone else, not part of nobility, who would love her as much as she loved him.

And now the man in front of her, whom she had long given her heart to, had decided that it would be intriguing to play with her feelings.

"I will not have any other woman as my wife if she’s not you." George spoke before Charlotte could say anything else.

Charlotte was about to lash out in anger, but was stunned by the intense emotions in his eyes, leaving her speechless. A shiver ran down her spine.

"I only want you as my wife and the mother of my child. You cannot get a divorce, Charlotte."

George could tell what she was thinking. Was she regretting their marriage? Panic set in his mind, and at the same time, he felt a pang in his heart.

’I will not let you.’ He didn’t voice out his thoughts. Even if he had to lock her in the mansion... he would.

"Even if I’m to have a hundred children, they have to come from you."

George stared at his wife with a strong possessiveness, his voice deep with an emotion bothering obsession. Charlotte’s declaration of divorce had almost drove him to the brink of madness. It awoke dark feelings he didn’t know he had within him.

George’s countenance filled Charlotte with fear, but her legs subconsciously pressed together.

George continued, "I have loved you ever since we were children. From the time before I left for the academy when I was ten years old."

He only just realized what his feelings were. That time when he was about to leave for the academy, Charlotte had cried. He watched her as pearly tears ran down her cheeks. She had wasted her precious tears on him.

That was the first time George had met someone with genuine emotions when it came to him.

Ever since then, he always anticipated returning from the academy. Even though he never showed. He hadn’t understood those feelings either and was oblivious to what it meant.

Only now when he felt he was losing her. Only now when he found out she loved him. Only now when she wanted to leave did George realize what those feelings were. That he loved her.

Charlotte was stunned. Then, the tears started falling. Those were the words she had always wanted to hear. Why was it now that she had decided to get a divorce? Why was it now that their relationship had dampened to this point? Why now, when she had decided to let him go?

"You had relations with another woman." She settled with saying, barely succeeding in masking her hurt.

George looked ashamed. This was the first time she had ever said it to his face.

Her words meant that he claimed to love her, yet he had slept with another woman.

"That was never my intention. Please, listen to me, Charlotte." George pleaded. He would finally explain what happened that day after a year.
