Chapter 161: CHARLOTTE & GEORGE (10)

George stopped at the sound of Charlotte’s voice, then turned around. "What is it?"

"We..." Charlotte twisted her fingers together, mustering up courage. "C-can we sleep in the same room?"

Immediately the words were out, she lowered her head, ashamed. Growing up, she had always seen her parents share a room. Even when they would visit her in Amberale, they stayed together in a room. But maybe it wasn’t the case in nobility. How would her words make him think of her? Her heart beat wildly in her chest.

"Alright." The words left George’s mouth even before he thought about it.

’Huh?’ Charlotte was even more stunned that he agreed. Then, her face bloomed into a bright smile, leaving George stunned for a while.

He shook his head, and told Charlotte, "Tomorrow, you will be shown around the mansion as you must be tired. The servants will also be introduced to you." As they walked to his room.

"The servants will move your belongings here and the head maid will call you for dinner." He opened the door to his room.

"I understand... my lord." Charlotte added after a pause. She wasn’t used to saying that.

George stopped for a second, but didn’t say anything about it. He turned around and left the room, leaving Charlotte alone to herself.

Some moments after, a knock sounded on the door.

"Madam, it is the head maid." After saying that, she entered the room. "Madam, dinner is ready. Please follow this servant to the dining room."

Charlotte nodded and followed her to the dining room. George was already seated but hadn’t started eating.

"I apologize for making you wait, my lord."

George shook his head and gestured for her to seat down. She took a seat at his right. The servants served food and they ate in silence.

There was a slight air of awkwardness between them that came with the silence.

After eating, the new husband and wife left the dining room.

George told Charlotte once they were back in their room, "You can take a bath in the bathroom." He pointed at another door in the room.

"But what about you?" Charlotte asked, looking at him curiously.

"I will take a bath in another bathroom." After saying that, George left.

The head maid entered the room, a few maids behind her.

"Madam, these servants will assist you to take a bath." She bowed and left, leaving Charlotte with the maids who went into the bathroom to prepare the bath.

Charlotte stripped off her clothes and entered into the bathroom. She entered the bathtub filled with rose petals, her stiff body from the busy day relaxing in the soothing hot water. The bathroom was dimly lit with scented candles.

"The Master and Madam will soon fully become husband and wife."

"Madam is already so beautiful. If I were a man, I would envy the master."

"Yes. After we are done, the Master will not be able to resist the Madam."

"It may hurt, but you have to endure it Madam."

"It will be painful at first, but every woman has to go through it."

"This will make your marriage firm."

The maids moved busily around the bathroom, their mouths also working endlessly. They bathed her thoroughly with different scents and then oiled her body. They applied some sweet tasting rouge on her mouth.

All the maids bathing her were young and bashful. As they spoke, their faces were stained red.

After listening to the maids’ talk, Charlotte became nervous. Her mother had told her that something special happened between a married man and woman on the night of their wedding, but she hadn’t gone into detail. But she had said it was very important to consulate the marriage.

One would think that with all the books Charlotte read while cooped up at home growing up, she’d have come across some adult romance books, but the truth was that Charlotte indeed had a lot of adult books, but... Charlotte could never bring herself to read those scenes, always skipping ahead with a blushing face as red as a tomato as soon as her eyes landed on an explicit word or scene.

But now, Charlotte felt some slight regret. Maybe she should have gone ahead and read it. At least then she wouldn’t be so clueless now.

Would it be possible to ask the maids to get her one of her books from her luggage? Charlotte wondered nervously.

She shook her head nervously. What if George came into the room while she was reading and saw what she was reading? Would she be able to show her face?

Charlotte thought that if that happened, she would bury herself alive and never come out.

She exited the bathroom and sat on the bed as the maids left, gigling.

One of the maids brought a bowl forward. "Madam, please drink this. It will make the pain more bearable and give you more energy."

Charlotte slowly emptied the entire bowl with slightly shaking hands. The maid took the empty bowl, bowed and left, leaving behind words that were supposed to be comforting but did nothing to ease Charlotte’s nerves.

"I’m sure the master will be gentle..."

Charlotte’s heart beat wildly.

She took deep breaths to come herself and looked around the room to distract herself. She decided to take the opportunity to familiarize herself with the room she would now be living in.

Charlotte realized that she had been in the room before.

Her face lit in realization. This wasn’t the mansion’s master bedroom. This was George’s room.

Charlotte knew because she had been here once when George was sick and couldn’t leave the mansion.

The room was painted in dark tones. There wasn’t much homeliness to it either. There was just the large bed, a study table and two doors that led to the bathroom and wardrobe respectively.

No portraits hung in the walls and nothing indicated an interest.

Charlotte paused. There was a portrait. It wasn’t very noticeable at firstunless you looked around the room carefully.

She stood up from the bed and walked slowly toward the portrait.

Her heart skipped a beat as she approached it. She could vaguely see the silhouette of a woman come into view.

Could it be George’s mother? She thought, but shook her head. She couldn’t lie to herself.

She knew that George disposed his mother. He obviously wouldn’t have a portrait of her in his room.

Then who was this woman?

Her heart increased its pace the closer she was to the portrait.

In the dim light of the room, she squinted her eyes to view the portrait.

The next moment, her eyes widened. She knew the woman in the painting because... it was herself!

She recognized the painting.

Once her grandfather had invited a painter to paint a portrait of her. George had been present at that time.

After the painter had completed the painting, George had asked to take the painting.

Charlotte agreed and her grandfather had not disapproved. It was only now that Charlotte realized the reason why. It was because her grandfather already knew that they would get married.

Looking back at the portrait of herself, a small smile made its way on Charlotte’s face.

George kept her portrait in his room. Did it mean that...

She took a deep breath in to calm herself, but Charlotte felt like her heart was about to erupt in happiness.

She went back to sit on the bed, but her steps had become lighter.

She resumed her action of looking around the dim room.

It was only then that she noticed that there were scented candles and an incense burner, which weren’t there when she first came into the room.

Charlotte’s gaze trailed down as she looked down at herself. She was wearing a nightgown that the maids had prepared, but it hugged her body in a way that was unfamiliar to her. It was low in the cleavage area and was made of very light material that was almost see-through.

Charlotte wrapped her arms around herself even though she was alone in the room.

She was glad that the room was dim. She didn’t know how she would look at her husband if he saw her like this, and she couldn’t change either.

Her belongings hadn’t been brought into the room yet and she couldn’t leave the room scantily dressed.

It also wasn’t possible to open the door, peak out and stop a servant to ask them to bring her belongings.

What if a male servant happened to pass by and took her call as an invitation or blamed her when that wasn’t her intention? She was a newly married woman and had to be cautious. She knew that many in nobility did not like her and she didn’t want to fall into their traps. Who knew if they had planted spies in the mansion.

With those thoughts, Charlotte stayed put on the bed.

She was forcefully snapped out of her thoughts when the door opened. Her heart skipped a beat.

Could a servant have come to frame her?

Her face turned anxious. She looked up and saw that it was her husband.
