Chapter 154: CHARLOTTE & GEORGE (3)
In the children’s area.
The children sipped their tea, albeit not quietly.
A few servants stood nearby to watch them.
Duchess Winston had made this arrangement of placing the children at another part of the garden, saying that it was so that the children could socialize freely without any interruption from the adults.
Whether there was an ulterior motive behind her actions, the noblewomen didn’t know.
"The pastries are delicious as always. As expected of the cooks used by the Winston Duchy." A child praised.
"The cooks used by the Anton Duchy is also the same." They didn’t forget to praise Liam.
They were the sons of the only Dukes in the kingdom. The children rushed to curry favor with all of them. Liam and Ian weren’t friends, but they also weren’t enemies. It was just that they didn’t have much interactions between them. Because of this, the noble children didn’t have to be wary of one when praising the other.
"I’m sure it’s the same for her highness." A girl praised and many others joined in.
Few of them had had an opportunity to attend a tea party hosted by Catherine or Aristia at the Grand Duke Mansion.
Even so, they knew that the members of the royal family couldn’t be left out of the praising. She was the one with the highest status among all of them and was extremely pampered by her family, the king’s family and her maternal family, allowed to do anything she wanted and act anyway she liked. The noble children were envious and all wished to be her.
’The third princess is no longer as before’. That was the thought that had been running through their minds for a long time.
In all the tea parties they had gotten the privilege to meet her, she seemed to have changed, and it was after her fifth birthday. She was less bratty and seemed easier to get along with.
However, they soon figured out that though she seemed easy to get along with compared to before, it didn’t mean she was. They first understood that at the banquet on the third day of the Kingdom’s anniversary. The third princess was no longer bratty or arrogant, she was sharp and witty.
Aristia understood all this, especially the fact that the novel she had read was extremely faulty.
[Only adds to the stupidity.] She rolled her eyes.
An odd question snapped her out of her thoughts.
"Young Master Ian, do you think commoners use these cups?" A child from a minor noble family asked, lightly tapping the expensive porcelain cup.
Another boy added, "I also wonder if they drink the same tea as us?"
Aristia shook her head mentally. She really should try harder to remember their names. [And what sort of questions are those? Kids these days.]
"How would I know? I’m not a commoner." Ian Winston replied. Ian Winston, Duchess Winston’s only child was ten years old this year and had already long been attending the academy.
He had returned from the academy the previous month of June for the summer break and had extended his stay even though the academy had resumed this month. However, he would soon return to the academy.
"That is true. How would brother Ian know? You should ask Wade." Another boy replied. He was a few years older than Wade, probably around seven.
They all turned to the one who was a commoner.
They were intentionally looking for trouble. It was clear that they were targeting Wade.
Everybody turned to Wade, waiting to see his reaction even though they were almost convinced of how he would react. Wouldn’t he just lower his head timidly and stammer out a reply.
Wade was stunned for some seconds when the conversation suddenly shifted to him without any notice.
He looked up to see everyone’s eyes on him.
The question finally registered in his mind and his mood plummeted.
The average commoners obviously couldn’t afford those cups and tea. The tea they drank would definitely not be on par with those commonly drunk in nobility. The noble children obviously wanted to mock his background.
They never let him be. He would be on his own, but they would all come to him with their unwanted attention.
Still, no matter how much they mocked him, Wade couldn’t bring himself to do anything. He couldn’t defend himself, instead, he silently and repeatedly endured their behavior.
He lowered his head, his fist clenched and unclenched before he finally said. "I— the commoners don’t have these porcelain cups and they don’t drink the same tea." He replied.
Aristia shook her head with a small, inaudible sigh. When would this kid stand up for himself?
Liam turned to her but she shook her head to show that nothing was wrong. He nodded and looked back at Wade, watching the drama with a blank, unattached look on his face.
Meanwhile,Wade happened to catch that vague look of disappointment Aristia had shown as he locked eyes with her.
The next moment, a look of determination crossed his eyes as he finally decided what to do.
He turned to the boy who had pointed him out and opened his mouth, saying firmly. "The commoners don’t drink the same tea as they cannot afford it. But you don’t need to ask me as it would be better for you to see for yourself. You seem to care about commoners. It seems you would do good as a commoner."
The moment he uttered those words, there was silence all around, so much so that one could even hear a pin drop.
But the expression on Wade’s face was innocent as if he really meant what he said and wasn’t mocking anyone.
Was it really Wade who just spoke now? They were really doubting their eyes and ears now.
The boy too was surprised, definitely not expecting Wade to say anything else. When the words finally sank in, the boy’s expression changed.
"You...!" He was speechless, his neck turning red in anger and embarrassment as he glanced at Wade and then around the table, before returning his gaze to Wade again.
Aristia gave a nod of approval that Wade didn’t fail to catch. [Harsh. By children standard.]
She leaned back on the chair and watched what was happening without saying a word.
As a part of royalty, it was extremely rude and disrespectful for these kids to argue so directly in her presence, equal to blatantly ignoring her, but she didn’t say anything. It was entertaining to her. Watching the other boy she didn’t know his name turning a shade of different colours was a funny sight.
Watching how speechless he had become was also a bit interesting.
Liam added a cookie from his plate to her plate, not looking the least bit interested in the drama.
"Do you mean to say I act like a commoner?" The boy finally regained his ability to speak, his face spelling anger.
"I just said you should see for yourself." Wade still retained his innocent look. No one could tell if he was pretending or not.
"Then, what do you mean I would do good as a commoner?" The boy asked, even angrier.
Wade shrugged. "That was just what I thought. You were quite interested in knowing about the commoners, so I thought that if you were a commoner, you would be very benevolent."
The boy stood up abruptly, causing the chair to move back harshly and almost fall.
In fact, it was a wonder it hadn’t already fallen after the force of the push.
The servants who were nearby were alerted by the noise. They came rushing in to see what was happening while some left to call the Noble ladies since they couldn’t touch the children.
"What’s wrong? Please, calm down, young Masters." They tried to calm down the situation but the boy wasn’t even listening.
The surrounding noble children just watched without getting involved.
He pointed his finger in Wade’s direction. "You! Say that again!"
When he saw that Wade didn’t reply, he became even angrier and the redness in his neck increased.
"Who do you think you are? You’re just the bastard son of the Marquis from a mistress and you dare to speak to—"
"What is going on here?" His words were forcefully interrupted.
The area became calm again.
"Mother!" The boy called out pitifully as if he had been aggrieved when he saw his mother approaching with the group of ladies, his attitude undergoing a three-sixty degree turn from harsh to pitiful. He would show this bastard his status!
"Wade said I belonged as a commoner. I just asked a question but he said that." He said in an aggrieved manner.
His mother rushed toward him and embraced him. She had always spoiled him as he was the only son, and she couldn’t stand him being aggrieved because of a mere Marquis son from a mistress.
She glared at Wade angrily and then turned to Charlotte.
