Chapter 126: PLAYING THE ROLE OF SPY KIDS AND A TEENAGER
"...Great grandfather likes to watch great grandmother paint." Liam said, snapping out of his thoughts.
[Hmm. I see.] Aristia nodded.
[Great grandpa really likes great grandma.] Aristia thought.
It was as sweet as it was lovely. He had to love her to be able to watch her do something as time consuming as painting.
[Now, back to the matter at hand.]
Aristia pushed away the thought of the love between her great grandparents and focused on the current situation.
She guessed that since Roxanne loved to paint, she would equally appreciate paintings.
"Well, coincidentally, that is already ongoing." She said, referring to Zender’s present. "Which leaves us with the painting for great grandmother. Since she likes to paint, she should also like paintings." She examined their options.
Liam nodded in agreement. "Yes. Great grandma really likes paintings."
"But, where will we find a painting that great grandmother will be satisfied with?" Lauren raised her doubts, looking between the two of them. But her gaze mostly remained on Aristia.
"That’s what these are for." Aristia gestured to the art supplies.
Liam and Lauren quickly caught on.
"You want to make a painting?" Lauren asked.
"You can paint?" Liam asked, wondering why he didn’t know.
The two asked the questions at the same time, both equally surprised.
Painting lessons would only begin for noble girls when they turned six and Aristia was only five years old. She would soon turn six years old later this year, but she shouldn’t be learning to paint yet.
"Yes and yes. I’m learning it on my own before the classes start." Aristia provided an explanation, then muttered under her breath. "Though it’s been quite a while since I’ve painted." She wondered if her skills had rusted.
"Did you say something, Tia?" Lauren asked curiously. She saw that Aristia had said something but she didn’t quite hear what she had muttered.
"I said we need to be quick so that we can return to the Estate and start baking." Aristia said, looking at Lauren with a smile.
Liam and Lauren doubted Aristia’s words about being able to paint. Even if she did paint, what would it look like and would great grandmother Roxanne accept it?
Roxanne was an avid admirer of art and had high expectations. It would definitely not be easy to earn her approval when it came to artworks, not to talk of a painting made by their cousin who hadn’t even begun painting.
They wondered what reaction their great grandma would have but they hoped Aristia wouldn’t be sad and disappointed at their great grandma’s reaction.
Adeline, on the other hand, had no doubts as she had seen Aristia hold a paintbrush, but not only that, she had personally witnessed Aristia paint for the storybook she had made for the second prince.
She had also seen her princess’s sketches for the dresses she wanted made for herself so she didn’t have the slightest doubt in her or in her ability.
Adeline kept silent, but her gaze on the obviously unbelieving Liam and Lauren was a little disdainful.
The group made a few more purchases for the gifts they wanted to give their great grandparents. Afterwards, they boarded their carriage and headed back to the Hemsworth Estate.
Their arrival wasn’t announced, just as they had ordered.
But instead of entering the mansion, they immediately turned and headed to the main hall of the Estate.
On reaching the main hall, it was a very large hall used for hosting events like banquets.
The hall was sparkly clean and was already being decorated with beautiful flowers from the garden arranged beautifully.
On noticing their arrival, Cassandra and a group of servants approached and bowed.
"Welcome, young master and misses."
"Please, remember to keep silent about this and do not disclose our information." Aristia smiled cutely at them.
"Yes, Princess." They bowed in unison, some of them gripping their chests.
Why was the third princess so cute?
They returned to doing what they were doing immediately afterwards, leaving Aristia, Liam and Lauren.
Aristia, Adeline, Liam and Lauren headed towards a small room in a side hall. A few manservants assisted in carrying the art supplies to the room.
Not long after, Aristia, Lauren and Adeline returned to the main building of the Estate and sneakily entered the kitchen unnoticed. It was as if they were playing the role of spy kids and teenager.
Aristia turned to them. "Let’s get started." She ordered.
Lauren looked a little apprehensive. It would be her first time entering the kitchen to cook, Aristia thought.
"Come on. We don’t have much time and there’s plenty to do." She said to convince her. She knew that cooking was new to Lauren so she coaxed her a little bit.
Hesitantly, Lauren nodded. "What should I do?"
After they were done, Adeline carried the baked goods in a tray and covered it with a cloth.
"Wait," Aristia stopped them from leaving, then she picked up a bowl and put it in the still hot oven. The oven could remain hot for hours. It was perfect. Adeline and Lauren were confused with her actions but they said nothing. They then left the kitchen.
There were servants moving around busily. Aristia stopped one of the maids who was carrying a bucket of water.
"Where are my great grandparents?" She asked the maid. She hoped they were still occupied. She didn’t want all their planning to go to waste.
The maid stiffened a little bit when she was stopped by her, but she relaxed the next moment.
The princess had grown and was no longer the same.
Hearing her question made her relax even more. So it was just this. There was no trouble. The maid thought.
She smiled and replied in a low tone. "The old Master and Madam are still painting in the art room with youngest Master and Miss. The Masters and Madams are having tea in the tea room."
Aristia sighed in relief. Luckily, her grandparents were still occupied and didn’t seem to be done anytime soon.
She nodded at the maid before she and her group exited the mansion.
Behind them, a maid approached the other maid with the rag she had used to clean held with both hands, and whispered, "I wonder what surprise the young Miss and young Masters are planning for the old Master and Madam."
The other maid nodded in agreement, "I don’t know either, but it seems like it is going to be grand."
Other maids stood around them curiously when they heard them discussing. Some of them had been close and had heard the question the third princess had asked their fellow maid.
Another eavesdropping maid added with a disapproving face. "A grand disaster, you mean. What good ’grand’ do you expect from children who can barely do anything by themselves? They should have just let the old Master and Madam to celebrate their anniversary as usual. I don’t know what the butler and head maid were thinking when they agreed with such a thing..."
The old head maid stood in front of them the next second with a scowl on her face, causing the maid to stiffen.
The other maids held their breaths. Not only had she spoken disapprovingly of the Butler and head maid, she had also spoken carelessly about the young masters and misses. It could very well cost her her job.
The head maid opened her mouth and the maid’s heart pounded. This was it. She was going to lose her job just because of her bad mouth and no aristocrat household would hire her when they heard she had spoken badly about her master’s. The maid felt she was doomed and was deeply regretting her loose tongue.
However, the head maid only said,
"What are you lot doing there talking? Get to work."
The maids scurried away after being discovered.
The head maid only spared the last maid a glance before turning away. However, she said.
"Be careful what you say. I won’t be so lenient next time."
The maid sighed in relief, bowed and walked faster.
The head maid’s face melted into a happy smile after they had all left. "Madam will be very happy at the effort the young Masters and Misses are putting in for their anniversary. But they can’t find out yet."
That was what mattered; the effort the children put in. The head maid herself also did not believe that the children could make anything grand or noteworthy on their own, but it was the effort that counted, she thought.
She turned and headed to the art room to lend a hand in distracting Zender and Roxanne.
All the servants in the mansion knew that the children were planning something for their great grandparents’ anniversary. None of them said a word about it though. Instead, they collectively contributed in their own way while pretending everything was as normal.
But like the maid earlier, it wasn’t everyone that was in support. Nevertheless, they could do nothing about it.
If they ruined the surprise in any way, then they would face grave consequences.
The head maid arrived at the door to the art room and knocked gently.
"My lord, my Lady. It is the head maid." She announced her presence while also asking permission to enter.
"Come in." Zender’s voice came through and the head maid opened the door, disappearing behind the door when it closed.
