Chapter 52: Roiselin’s Troubles (Also Known as Babysitting His Master)
Roiselin had long since accepted that being Adolfo’s attendant was both a privilege and a punishment.
On one hand, it was a respectable position—a chance to be in the service of one of the most influential young nobles in the land. On the other hand... it was Adolfo.
Which meant constant chaos.
And today? Today was one of those days.
Roiselin, ever the observer, had perfected the art of reading his master’s moods. And right now, Adolfo was a perfect storm of conflicting emotions.
He was clearly annoyed—irritated by the fact that Roiselin had dragged him back to work on his pending duties, things he’d rather avoid. But then... there was the faint glimmer of something else. A smug satisfaction in his eyes because, well, Adolfo had managed to set up a "date" with Lady Katherine.
Technically, it had been Roiselin’s doing, but Adolfo certainly wasn’t going to give him credit.
Roiselin had also been witness to the earlier spectacle—the oh-so-dramatic kiss Florante had placed on Lady Katherine’s hand in farewell. He could practically feel his master’s displeasure radiating off him. If there was anything Adolfo hated more than being bested, it was being outdone by someone like Florante.
It wasn’t anger that marred his master’s face. It wasn’t quite irritation, either. It was something... more complicated. Something Roiselin hadn’t seen before.
And that, of course, made his job even more complicated.
He knew Adolfo was conflicted about his feelings for Lady Katherine. The tension between them was undeniable, but no matter what Roiselin said—no matter how many times he pointed out the obvious—his master simply refused to acknowledge it. So, Roiselin had learned to stay quiet and watch the drama unfold, ready to respond accordingly when necessary.
At the moment, Adolfo sat in a brooding silence, his usual lazy smirk replaced by a sharp, almost dangerous expression. Roiselin could practically hear the wheels turning in his master’s head.
"Well, Roiselin," Adolfo finally broke the silence, his voice far too smooth, "you’ve certainly made things interesting today."
Roiselin didn’t flinch, despite the venomous tone in his master’s words. "I aim to please, my lord."
He knows that if simply called Adolfo to work, his master would conveniently take forever to finish it.
So... he needed bait.
And what better bait than Lady Katherine?
Clearing his throat, Roiselin shifted into his most professional tone. "Master, since Lady Katherine agreed to go with you this weekend, I assume you’ll be finishing those duties in the workshop before then?"
There was a pause.
Adolfo, who had been mindlessly tidying his desk with the precision of someone who was trying to avoid any real thought, froze.
Then, slowly, he turned toward Roiselin. His crimson eyes narrowed with suspicion, and a flicker of something like intrigue passed through them.
"Did you plan all of this?" he asked, his voice low and skeptic.
"Did you plan all of this?" Adolfo’s voice was low, dangerous.
Roiselin met his gaze with a polite, almost bored smile. "I’m not sure what you mean, Master."
His tone was smooth, utterly innocent. "I simply heard you mention that Lady Katherine enjoys the marketplace, and I just happened to know there’s a festival this weekend. What a coincidence, really."
Adolfo raised a brow, a wry smile tugging at the corners of his lips, as though waiting for Roiselin to dig himself deeper. "Hmm..." he mused, savoring the moment. "Convenient, isn’t it?"
"Indeed," Roiselin replied smoothly, unfazed by the growing tension. "A perfect opportunity, wouldn’t you agree?"
Adolfo’s lips twisted into a knowing smile. "You really have a knack for making things... interesting, Roiselin."
Roiselin kept his expression neutral, despite the urge to smirk. "I only wish to assist, my liege."
Adolfo studied him a moment longer, suspicion and admiration in his gaze. Then, with a subtle shift in posture that indicated acceptance, he nodded. "Fine," he said, his voice colder, as though a decision had been made. "But if I’m to make the most of this opportunity, you’ll be handling all the work while I’m... ’distracted.’"
Roiselin didn’t miss a beat and gave a small bow. "Of course, my liege."
Adolfo flashed his usual smile. "I’ll finish the work before the weekend."
Roiselin raised an eyebrow. "Yes, it would be preferable if you finished it before attending your ’extra classes’ tomorrow, my liege."
Adolfo’s crimson eyes narrowed slightly, something between suspicion and intrigue flickering in them. "Are you my ally or my enemy?"
"I am certainly your ally, my liege. In fact, I even helped you set up your ’outing’ with Lady Katherine, if I may remind you," Roiselin replied proudly.
Adolfo raised both eyebrows. "Yeah, after dragging me back to work."
Roiselin smiled smoothly. "I believe it was wise to do so, my liege. It’s better than seeing you lost in thought daydreaming about the lady and getting no work done."
"I wasn’t daydreaming."
"My apologies," Roiselin coughed, "I meant brooding."
Adolfo glared at him but didn’t comment further. Roiselin continued, unfazed. "Now, you have reasons to finish your work before the weekend. These things can’t wait, unless you decide to cancel your plans with Lady Katherine to finish them by then."
"I’ll finish them. I planned to finish them today anyway, but you interrupted me. I just have something to give the lady," Adolfo said, his expression darkening with intent.
Ah, yes. Roiselin recalled the small gift Adolfo had bought for Lady Katherine. While his master had bought countless gifts for the princess—his "prospective fiancée"—this one was different. Adolfo had chosen it himself, a simple keychain shaped like a flower. It wasn’t expensive, not some grand gesture, but it was something Lady Katherine would like. Roiselin had already delivered the gifts for the princess, but this one... this one had remained in Adolfo’s hands.
Adolfo had spent hours eying it, though he had yet to actually give it to her. Roiselin had noticed, and he couldn’t help but think that his master was taking too long to act.
"My liege," Roiselin said with a smirk, "you finally know what Lady Katherine likes, but you’re moving slower than a snail when it comes to giving it to her. Will you let the weekend pass before you hand it over?"
Adolfo turned to him with an up eyebrow, "Roi."
"Ah, but before that," Roiselin continued smoothly, reaching into his coat, "I have something for you, my liege."
He retrieved a neatly wrapped box adorned with delicate preservation stickers. A folded letter sat atop the package. It was quite obvious who it was from, given the color of the ribbons and letter.
Adolfo hesitated for only a fraction of a second before taking them. His fingers ghosted over the seal before breaking it open with a single, practiced motion.
Roiselin watched closely.
One second. Two seconds. Three—
There it was.
The barely perceptible shift in Adolfo’s expression.
It was subtle—oh, so subtle.
A small furrow of the brow. The faintest flicker of disbelief. A fraction of hesitation before his fingers curled just slightly tighter around the paper.
Oh, how fascinating.
Roiselin, already invested, leaned in. "What did Lady Katherine say, Master?"
Adolfo didn’t answer.
Instead, he slowly turned the letter around so Roiselin could read it for himself.
---
To Master Eldritch,
You asked about the student who reminded me of you. I must admit, it’s quite amusing—his sharp mind, confident demeanor, and the way he always seems one step ahead. There’s something familiar about him, though I can’t quite place why.
He’s a marriage candidate for my dear friend Laura, but for some reason, he’s rather friendly with me. Perhaps it’s because I’m her friend? Or maybe he’s just naturally like that. Either way, I can’t help but find it interesting.
I’ve sent some yema and leche flan, made by my own hands and preserved with magic. I hope they reach you well.
Wishing you good health,
Katherine
PS. Please do try the sweets. I made quite a few, but shipping them individually would take far too long, so I thought it’d be much more convenient to send them all at once. I hope you’ll like them! They’re called yema, leche flan, and dulce.
---
Lady Katherine had written about a certain student who reminded her of Master Eldritch.
But the amusing part?
That student was none other than Adolfo himself.
And Katherine, completely unaware of the truth, had casually mused that despite being a marriage candidate for her friend, Adolfo was oddly friendly with her.
She had even speculated—rather innocently, as Roiselin noted—that perhaps Adolfo was only like that because she was friends with Princess Laura.
Roiselin clasped a hand over his mouth, barely holding in his laughter. Oh, this is delightful.
His master, meanwhile, was staring at the letter, his expression unreadable.
Adolfo had a different personality away from public eyes. His charming smiles and flattering words were nowhere to be found in the privacy of his office or chambers. But Roiselin couldn’t help but be amused by his master’s evolving expressions ever since he’d met Lady Katherine.
Adolfo’s face shifted. His fingers twitched, and his eyes narrowed, as though he were lost in some deep thought.
"Something the matter, my lord?" Roiselin asked, feigning innocent curiosity.
Adolfo placed the letter down slowly, his crimson eyes flickering with emotions that Roiselin couldn’t quite read.
"She thinks I’m only friendly with her because of Princess Laura," Adolfo muttered, his voice almost a low growl.
Roiselin raised an eyebrow, pretending to consider the situation. "Interesting," he said lightly. "And what will you do about that, my lord?"
Adolfo remained silent for a moment, clearly caught in the web of his own thoughts. Roiselin, ever observant, kept a neutral expression, but inside he was grinning. This was the sort of turmoil his master would never show to others—only behind closed doors, in moments like this.
Adolfo exhaled sharply, as if trying to process the sheer absurdity of the situation. "She wrote this entire letter assuming I’m only speaking to her because of Princess Laura."
"Ah, well," Roiselin said lightly, "it is a reasonable conclusion. A potential fiancé would want to be on good terms with his betrothed’s friend."
"But I am not—" Adolfo stopped himself, exhaling sharply before muttering, "—at least, not yet."
Roiselin simply hummed, watching as his master wrestled with frustration. It was always entertaining to see his master caught off guard by something unexpected.
As though to distract himself, Adolfo suddenly turned his attention to the package on his desk. Roiselin raised an eyebrow, sensing his master’s shift in focus.
The moment Adolfo unwrapped it, a distinct, sweet scent filled the air—yema, dulce, and leche flan, all carefully packaged to preserve their freshness.
Roiselin could almost hear his master’s inner thoughts as Adolfo studied the desserts, the smell of sugar and milk hanging thick in the room. Despite the care and skill that went into the making of these treats, Adolfo’s expression remained distant, as if his mind were elsewhere.
Finally, he muttered, "She’s a troublesome woman..."
The words were meant to be neutral. Maybe even amused.
But there was an unmistakable edge in his tone.
Roiselin couldn’t resist stepping closer, his golden eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Does that bother you, my lord?"
Adolfo huffed, shifting his weight slightly. "Not really, but..."
Not really?
Oh, but it did bother him. Roiselin could see it in the tightness of his shoulders, the way his jaw clenched ever so slightly.
Not the part about Eldritch—he could almost laugh at that. If Katherine wanted to think he was some scholarly, mysterious figure, he’d let her. It was charming, in its way.
No, the real issue?
The part that was getting under his skin?
She thought his attentiveness was all for Princess Laura.
She believed he was hanging around, chatting with her, looking at her the way he did—all because of Princess Laura.
As if Princess Laura even mattered in this equation.
Adolfo let out a long breath, as if exhaling all his irritation with it. "I wonder if that’s why she’s been acting so... oddly around me."
Roiselin tilted his head thoughtfully, eyes gleaming with amusement. Now, this was interesting.
Lady Katherine had definitely been acting differently. It was subtle, but noticeable. It wasn’t just the mix-up with Princess Laura—there was something more. A hesitation in her words, a shift in her posture whenever Adolfo was around.
Fascinating.
Roiselin had his suspicions.
He wasn’t sure Lady Katherine even realized it herself, but from where he stood, she might just like his master as well.
But Roiselin wasn’t going to say that out loud.
No, no. That would spoil all the fun for his master.
It was almost too entertaining, watching how Adolfo was handling this. The usually carefree young noble was now going through all the motions of... well, not quite brooding, but definitely not his usual self. Adolfo had started attending classes he’d normally skip, all because of her. And Roiselin had to admit, Lady Katherine’s influence on him was certainly something to behold.
Still, Roiselin couldn’t help but grin to himself. As much as he liked seeing his master’s frustration—oh, he was good at keeping things entertaining—he figured they were getting close to the point where it would all work out. But for now? He’d keep that little nugget of hope to himself, and stay the ever-loyal chamberlain.
"So, shall we head to Master Uriel now, Master? I’ve got everything ready for you."
Adolfo, still deep in thought, snapped back to reality. He glanced over at Roiselin, like he’d just remembered he was there. "Sure. Let’s go."
Adolfo muttered something under his breath—most likely a few colorful words—before grabbing a piece of yema and shoving it into his mouth, chewing aggressively, as if he could consume his frustration along with it.
Roiselin had to bite back a laugh. He’d never seen someone take their irritation out on food quite like this. It was... almost comical.
Being Adolfo’s attendant was often a mixture of privilege and punishment.
But on days like this?
Oh, it was absolutely worth it.
