Mystic Overlord: Reading Gives Strength -
Chapter 77: Visitor from Headquarters
Chapter 77: Chapter 77: Visitor from Headquarters
"Is it the Spring Investigation Bureau headquarters sending investigators to support the Blenheim Investigation Bureau?"
Ronald instantly recalled the content he had just read in the book.
Just as Alyda once said,
"In areas where the human population reaches a certain level, the control of the ’seeds’ of knowledge must be limited in number."
This situation caused a problem.
When official bodies like this encountered staff shortages, they dared not seek help from colleagues in other regions too freely, because once the number of seeds reached a certain threshold,
The world’s alteration would descend in no time.
Even using the grace period before the world’s alteration to prepare for personnel to move flexibly was too risky for them.
The next second, Ronald realized something else.
The gentleman leading the group of five and who had approached him, Mr. Willard he mentioned...
Wasn’t that the investigator who had just left yesterday?
Ronald didn’t rush to explain; instead, he carefully examined the man in front of him.
Unlike the Blenheim investigators in their large coats and wide-brimmed hats, the man before him was suited up, dressed like a salesman. Although his wording had been polite when asking questions, the indifference in the depths of his eyes wasn’t hidden or reserved at all.
Ronald gave the headquarter investigator in front of him a formulaic smile and politely nodded,
"Please wait a moment."
"I need to inform the management personnel."
"Make it quick."
The frowning man seemed impatient, but he nodded in agreement nonetheless.
Immediately, Ronald reached beneath the counter and pulled a ring.
In less than half a minute, Miss Mapple, having heard Ronald’s signal bell, hurried down the stairs.
When she reached the bottom of the stairs and then lifted her head to see the newcomer,
Mapple’s expression changed.
She was silent for a few seconds before continuing,
"Spencer, what brings you here?"
"Why can’t I come?"
The leading male investigator raised an eyebrow.
In response to Ms. Mapple’s unwelcoming attitude, the man simply retorted with a question, then went more directly to the point of his earlier inquiry:
"After the situation in Blenheim was reported, we came as representatives of the Spring headquarters today."
"Do you understand?"
"Now I would like to talk to Willard."
"Compared to you, who have debased yourself to do some boring things in the Personnel Department, we investigators who strive at the frontline have common ground."
"..."
Mapple remained silent.
With an unsightly expression, she stood still for almost ten seconds, yet she still did not retort.
Several breaths passed.
She moved to turn and look for Willard in the back of the first floor.
As Spencer had said, Willard, who had been resolving mystical events on-site in recent years, might be the best negotiator compared to her, a civilian staffer.
However, at that moment, Ronald suddenly spoke up:
"Miss Mapple, please wait a moment."
"Someone left a note for you at the front desk earlier."
Speaking, Ronald tore off the note he had jotted down yesterday from under the counter, folded it simply, and handed it to Ms. Mapple.
Upon receiving the piece of paper, Mapple immediately opened it and glanced at it.
Despite Ronald’s scribbled handwriting, she still managed to make out the text.
"..."
—Her gaze shifted from puzzled to serious;
—And from serious to resolute;
——At last, his gaze shifted from steadfast to one accepting responsibility.
"Thank you, Ronald."
Nonchalantly folding the slip of paper and stuffing it into her pocket, Mapple looked up at the man before her.
"Willard is not around the headquarters at the moment."
"Spencer, whether you like it or not, you’d better have a talk with me now."
"I know much more about the matters at Blenheim than you do."
Spencer immediately responded with an annoyed tone:
"You’re a clerk; there’s nothing I need to discuss with you..."
"How could there be nothing to discuss!"
This time, Mapple didn’t wait for him to finish before she interrupted.
She took a forceful step forward, speaking with an equally unpleasant tone:
"As of now, I am the overall person in charge at Blenheim Investigation Bureau."
"If you don’t like it, you can go and consult with Hude."
"I remember you guys came here also to install that thing called ’wireless telegraph,’ which shouldn’t be too troublesome, right?"
"..."
This time, it was Spencer’s turn to fall silent.
He didn’t respond to Mapple’s questioning.
Weighing his personal feelings against the commands from his superiors at the bureau, he eventually nodded, looking displeased.
"Alright then, let’s talk upstairs."
"Ronald, stay here and keep watch."
Giving Ronald an encouraging look, Miss Mapple then led away the five investigators from Spring Headquarters.
Listening to the group disappear up the stairs and the heavy sounds overhead,
Ronald remained unperturbed, scratching his head as though this had nothing to do with him, and pulled out the book he had just started reading from under the cabinet.
——Might as well continue reading.
Compared to the bureau’s feuds and grudges, reading seemed to be more interesting.
He, Ronald, was indeed a lover of books!
Continuing from where he left off, "Basic Mystical Knowledge" wasn’t offering much help anymore.
Aside from the earlier parts that covered the understanding of the world’s essence and the existence of canonical texts,
most of the rest detailed the experiences of the Magician during his times being pursued by the church.
It was an era of scarce mystical knowledge exchange and limited information.
Specialty personnel, united by their faith and trained from an early age, who formed a secret punitive organization called the punishers, were extraordinarily lethal in their hunt for the mystical side.
So, the contents that followed mostly taught how to evade the church’s pursuit and techniques for escaping in extreme situations.
Flipping aimlessly through the pages, Ronald shook his head and set the book down.
As far as he knew, the modern church no longer possessed the fervor of the dark ages to burn a Wizard at the stake on sight.
This was an era where royal power overwhelmingly exceeded ecclesiastical authority, and the church had evolved into a force under official rule.
The content towards the end of "Basic Mystical Knowledge"
was of no use to him anymore.
Switching to another book, "Recommendations for New Investigators," Ronald began a new reading session.
And the first page of the opening immediately made him unable to suppress a laugh.
"Hahaha..."
"What is this!"
On the first page of "Recommendations for New Investigators," it was likewise a tip from the author.
He wrote:
——A professional investigator doesn’t have to follow any rules.
——Only an idiot who dies in a mystical incident will leave behind a last word like ’I did everything according to the instructions in the guidebook’ while watching their life flash before their eyes!
