Mystic Overlord: Reading Gives Strength -
Chapter 70: Learning Spells
Chapter 70: Chapter 70: Learning Spells
Ronald looked at the metallic pendant in his hand.
According to the knowledge he understood, the pattern surrounding the "core spell" was the medium that guided the power of the school.
As for the English phrase "Volume 11, Page 260, Item 6"...
The first thing he thought of was the short phrase that the middle-aged military officer had muttered under his breath before making a move, after the murder on the train a month ago.
— Volume 3, Page 362, Item 3.
— The template that was identical to the English written on the school’s insignia.
Were both the Investigative Bureau and the military important components of the country of Grid, and they used a power system that originated from the same source?
It was at this moment that Mrs. Mapple, standing at the desk, urged him:
"Don’t just stand there guessing."
"Come over here,"
"Alright."
Nodding his head, Ronald walked over and stood next to Mrs. Mapple at the desk.
Then...
Then his gaze locked onto something.
The photo spread out on the table was in black and white, but its content was quite clear.
It was a page from a book.
Text on the page was vertically divided into two columns by a line down the middle, with six entries from top to bottom, from left to right, each followed by an English description.
[Lidocaine]
— Lidocaine.
A synthetic organic compound, its hydrochloride salt is commonly used as a local anesthetic. It produces a more rapid, powerful, and lasting anesthetic effect than procaine. Its 0.5~2% aqueous solution or saline solution is widely used for infiltration anesthesia, nerve block anesthesia, and spinal anesthesia, while its 2~4% solution is also used for mucosal anesthesia.
[Lie, Jonas (Lauritz-Idemil)]
— Lie (1833.11.6~1908.7.5).
Norwegian novelist, aimed to reflect the natural scenery of Norway, the life of the people, and the spirit of the society in his writings. He wrote the first novel "Dream" (Den-fremsynte-eller-billeder-fra-Nordland, 1870)...
[Lie, (Marius) Sophus]
— Lie (1842.12.17~1899.2.18).
Norwegian mathematician, made significant contributions to the theory of algebraic invariants and the theory of differential equations. In 1869 he went to Berlin, met Klein (Felix Klein, see entry), and later published several papers with him...
[Lie, Trygve (Halvdan)]
— Rey (1896.7.16~1968.12.30).
The first Secretary-General of the United Nations (1946-1952). He resigned mainly because of the Soviet Union’s hatred for his support of the UN’s military intervention in the Korean War. He studied at the University of Christiania (Oslo) and later became a lawyer, a significant member of the Norwegian Labour Party. After Germany invaded Norway in April 1940, he...
[Lie-algebra]
— Lie algebra.
An R-module for some fixed commutative ring R, with a product operation called a Poisson bracket that satisfies the following two conditions: For all elements x, y, z in the Lie algebra, [x, x=0, and [x,[y,z]]+[y,[z,x]]+[z,[x,y]]=0, the latter condition is known as the Jacobi identity. Lie algebras are particularly important in the theory of Lie groups (Lie-group, see entry).
— The above five entries.
— All follow the alphabetical order of an English dictionary.
The last entry naturally did the same.
[lie-detector]
— Polygraph.
Also known as POLYGRAPH. A device that records physiological states, i.e., records the subject’s blood pressure, pulse, and breathing status when answering questions, then judges whether the subject is lying based on this information...
"..."
Ronald fell silent.
Although the record of the lie detector on this page was not complete, by comparing it to the sixth entry and the "Page 260" book page number on the side,
He realized what kind of school the Investigative Bureau was.
No wonder Alida once complained to him, ’The queen of Grid is a monster, nobody on the mystical side could possibly be a match for that creature in a head-on confrontation!’
It would be a wonder if anyone could overpower her!
Looking at the dictionary’s method of recording in English, and the Britannica Encyclopedia’s method of description was also the old-fashioned British approach.
The royal family of Grid’s original...
Turned out to be the "Britannica Encyclopedia"!
In an instant, a desire was born in Ronald’s heart.
People from an alternate world couldn’t possibly fully decrypt an encyclopedia, especially when it’s a book of difficult-to-crack alphabetic codes.
If only I could get my hands on the original...
"Ronald?"
Just then, Mapple standing beside Ronald, patted his shoulder with a clear sense of pride in her tone.
"Stunned, aren’t you?"
"Her Majesty the Queen allows everyone who joins the Investigation Bureau to use this spell. This is a photo of the original text."
"Now, for the communication school mark, follow me and recite."
Ronald bowed his head and responded,
"Okay..."
Immediately after, the voices of a man and a woman echoed in the basement as they recited a string of English:
"Volume eleven, page two hundred sixty, item six."
"Volume eleven, page two hundred sixty, item six."
"Lie detector..."
"Lie detector..."
Having finished reciting the original text while gazing at its photo, Ronald instantly felt the mark of the school mystically connect with him.
From now on, as long as he recited ’Volume eleven, page two hundred sixty, item six,’ he would gain the ability to detect lies for half an hour.
Having experienced it firsthand, Ronald realized the method of learning in the alternate world.
Except for the original text holder—
Ordinary mystical side individuals would witness the original text directly or indirectly, and then follow the lead of a mentor to recite the text on the original.
Using the deliberately crafted school mark, they could retain this mysterious power in their hands.
The most critical difficulty was still the pronunciation.
Without systematic study, it was incredible to think of reading the original text from a place of ignorance. It was hard to imagine how the scholars of the mystical side of the world initially managed to complete their first learning.
Take Miss Mapple, who was guiding Ronald right now, for example.
Her English pronunciation was quite awkward, like a drunkard speaking with a thick tongue, just barely clear enough not to affect understanding.
While Ronald was pondering, Miss Mapple, who had guided him through the first recitation, spoke up again:
"It’s okay if you didn’t feel anything."
"It’s probably because your pronunciation of the spell isn’t quite standard. Just follow me and try again."
"Come on, ’Volume eleven, page two hundred sixty, item six’..."
"..."
Can I say my pronunciation is much more standard than yours?
Watching Miss Mapple continue to correct his pronunciation with her thoroughly inadequate colloquial English,
Ronald felt conflicted.
He gritted his teeth and followed for a couple of phrases before he interrupted the learning process:
"Miss Mapple, I feel the school mark has been activated!"
"Eh?"
Hearing Ronald’s voice, Mapple looked a bit surprised.
"Ronald..."
"You have a good talent, don’t you?"
"The first time I learned this spell, it took me two or three minutes to succeed."
While she spoke, Mapple didn’t stop her movements.
After confirming Ronald had completed his learning, she picked up the photo from the table, then carefully tucked it back into the album it came from.
Click—
After locking the album back on the shelf, Mapple turned and walked out.
"Let’s go, we should get back to work."
"Yes."
Following Mapple out of the basement, after the two emerged to the surface, Mapple concealed the entrance once again with the mystical side’s methods.
A lie-detecting spell, one for each person in the Investigation Bureau.
And now, Ronald had successfully obtained his own copy.
