Mystic Overlord: Reading Gives Strength -
Chapter 68: Investigation Results
Chapter 68: Chapter 68: Investigation Results
The person who went to investigate has returned?
Hearing the other party’s words, Ronald immediately became alert.
He hadn’t forgotten that very first night after his arrival through the portal.
The sight of each household in the entire village lighting candles on a rainy night was still chilling to recall.
Seeing Ronald’s expression turn serious, the lady from the investigation bureau did not offer further explanation.
She directly pulled out a page from the files she was holding and handed it over.
"Take a look."
"Thank you."
Accepting the document handed to him, Ronald read on.
This was a record akin to a scouting diary.
[October 29]
The town is peaceful; the local church has no record of mystical folks entering its domain. There is evidence of spell-casting around the Adler Manor. Based on the condition of the remnants, it is deduced that the incident took place two weeks ago.
[October 30]
According to verification, all is normal at the villa residence of Ronadl Adler, the reporting party. Following the spell-casting incident two weeks prior, no further traces have been found. The servant confirmed that Lord Ronald indeed left the villa unannounced, with the time, appearance, and stature all matching the physical characteristics and account of the reporting party.
[November 1]
Upon randomly visiting local residents, the reported night indeed had been rainy. However, the locals questioned under the lie-detecting spell all claim to have no memory of lighting candles that evening, regardless of age or gender, as did church personnel attest.
...
At the bottom of the document, resembling a work log, was the investigator’s conclusion.
[Investigation Result]
The local inhabitants have not been exposed to mystical knowledge; the nuns from the church have confirmed that the mystical population remains within safe thresholds, with no signs of mutation. Given that there were no actual losses in property or population in the village, the incident is presumed to be the test of a curse by a rogue Magician. It is recommended that no further investigation be conducted concerning Lord Ronald, as he possibly experienced hallucination due to spell interference.
Risk Level: [Low].
"..."
The clear, black writing on the white paper confirmed that the investigation bureau indeed sent someone to investigate.
In order to clarify the dates for Ronald, the lady added,
"Our bureau’s people have replaced ’Desolate Moon’ and ’Frost Moon’ with October and November."
"It’s the nomenclature transmitted from Springs, more convenient for written records."
"..."
Listening to the voice in front of him, Ronald did not look up.
Reflecting on the investigation results a few seconds more, he then spoke again:
"Madam, did all the investigators who went to my hometown return safely?"
"Of course," nodded the lady sitting opposite him. "I believe I understand your concerns, sir, but our investigators have all returned to Berenwic, with no interference with their memories or consciousness."
"The results of the investigation are trustworthy."
"This must have been just an accident. What you saw that night was all an illusion, which you took for the truth."
"..."
Ronald thought—
He was certain what he saw was not an illusion.
After all, at that time, he had just exited the trial in the illusionary realm and had acquired an original-class Magic Book. With the protection of the Rain Mist Divine Hammer on a rainy night, he had no reason to be deceived unwittingly.
Then the contradiction arose—
The agents of the investigation bureau went to that place, completed their investigation, and managed to return to Berenwic unharmed.
According to the reliable results of the investigation, the villagers’ responses were completely different from his own.
Could it be that the local residents’ memories had been altered?
Or perhaps...
"Mr. Ronald."
Just as Ronald continued to ponder, the lady in front of him interrupted his train of thought:
"The existence of our investigation bureau is to protect Gride from unlawful mystics. So, we will not pursue your erroneous report further, as you too are a victim."
"..."
Ronald wanted to rebut her.
But he restrained himself.
If he divulged everything in great detail, he indeed could convince her to send someone to investigate again.
But that would mean exposing his mastery over the original text.
Given the average moral standards of his era, Ronald did not think this was a good idea.
Ronald’s silence was interpreted by the bureau personnel as agreement to her statement.
In the mystical side of things, incidences where slightly weaker minded individuals got scared witless and reported errors were not uncommon.
It was not considered a big deal.
Lifting the water glass on the table for a sip, the lady continued,
"Now, let’s discuss the next matter."
Ronald lifted his gaze from the investigation report, already calm as usual:
"Is it my reassignment notice?"
"That’s right," replied the lady across from Ronald, her smile bearing a hint of kindness. "But you needn’t worry; it’s not that the bureau holds any ill feelings towards you. Instead, we truly need you to join us temporarily."
Ronald raised an eyebrow, his tone somewhat incredulous:
"Temporarily join?"
"Yes, temporarily join!"
The lady confidently nodded her head, then continued,
"In fact, it’s not just you. We have extended such an invitation to several residents of Berenwic who, like you, have a clean record."
There’s probably more to it than that...
As soon as the words were spoken, Ronald understood her true motive.
The bureau’s headquarters were understaffed.
There was likely some issue within Berenwic’s mystical side, and currently, they needed a significant number of people to handle it.
In this situation, the investigation bureau’s higher-ups chose to temporarily conscript some controllable mystical folks to help them complete some less important tasks.
The report in Ronald’s hands subtly validated this point.
It had been delivered to the bureau a week prior—
If the bureau had wished, they would have informed him of this result much earlier.
Had they not needed to conscript him, this record might never have reached Ronald’s eyes.
After all, there was almost no danger indicated in the investigation’s conclusion for the area around Yoyz.
Given the investigation bureau’s style of operations, they would bother to notify a person who got spooked by illusions specifically about the outcome.
His job shift wasn’t merely because he was ’clean.’
It was more because, in the eyes of the bureau’s people, he—who got scared by illusions and fled his hometown overnight—was very easy to control!
Sure enough, the lady sitting across spoke again:
"Mr. Ronald."
"We are very pleased with your attitude, reporting in on the same day you received the notice."
"This upcoming winter, you’ll just have to do some very simple work here at the investigation bureau."
"Oh, right." The lady suddenly smiled, as if she’d just remembered something.
"As compensation, besides the salary for temporary staff, we will also be providing you with the wages for the week you spent working at the train station."
Ronald smiled sincerely.
It was a relief that today’s reassignment wasn’t about the train station.
He didn’t mind changing jobs for the winter.
Rather—
Seizing this opportunity,
He could delve deeper into the mystical side of this world!
