Chapter 423: Chapter 420: Beneath the Deep Sea

"Fury, can you swim?"

"I’m fairly proficient, I suppose."

On the beach’s edge amidst the typhoon, the mermaid Halbes asked Ronald if he could move underwater. With an affirmative response, she continued, "I can sense that the origin of this typhoon is underground, in the center of this island, connected to the subterranean water channels."

"Don’t expect to take only the paths that normal humans would when you’re with me."

"I have absolutely no problem with that." Ronald cracked a slight smile, his finger adorned with a ring snapping.

Initially, he hadn’t placed much expectation on the "Magic Fluctuation Angel" to develop his abilities, considering it merely a supplement to his adaptability in sea, land, and air. Now faced with this situation, wasn’t this a perfect match for a real-world issue?

Seeing Ronald’s reaction, Halbes no longer pressed with questions.

Turning she dove back, the mermaid leapt into the sea vanishing in an instant, the typhoon’s fury completely erasing any traces on the surface, with only those who followed into the sea being able to glimpse her whereabouts.

Standing by the sea, Ronald contemplated for two seconds before relaying this information to the others and then followed, diving into the ocean.

The mermaid had appeared suddenly, and her change of attitude was even more baffling. But now, Ronald was quite confident in his abilities, and even if a trap lay before him, he was sure he could break through it directly.

Splash—

He plunged into the sea.

Under the activated abilities of the "Magic Fluctuation Angel," Ronald instantly adapted to the water and set his sights on the mermaid swimming towards the bottom.

He wasn’t sure if she was deliberately waiting for him.

Halbes, the mermaid, wasn’t swimming as swiftly as he had imagined, her pace no faster than that of a normal human.

...

In silence, Ronald continued to follow Halbes, descending beneath the sea’s surface.

Compared to the raging storm and fierce winds above, the deep sea at a certain depth became increasingly calm and pitch-black.

It was nearly at the critical moment where Ronald could barely see anything.

Halbes, the mermaid in front, reached into her waist garment and pulled out a short rod, then pressed down.

Click—

A light sound, and a bright conical beam of light emitted from the short rod in the mermaid’s hand.

However, the focus wasn’t on the light or the mermaid’s attitude.

At the same time as the short rod emitted light, Ronald didn’t feel any magic power fluctuation on it at all, not even the slight disturbance of an incantation starting up.

What did this imply?

If Ronald wasn’t mistaken...

That seemed to be a flashlight, and a waterproof one at that?

In an instant, a ridiculous and preposterous thought surfaced in Ronald’s mind.

According to what he had learned from his companions on the mystical side, this world should not originally have creatures like mermaids or Sirens. Everything happening around the island should have some close connection with the original canon.

But a mermaid with the ability to cast spells, yet at the same time holding a flashlight...

No matter how you looked at it, this didn’t fit into a fantasy world’s narrative.

Could it be possible, then, that the original canon that caused this incident summoned these marine creatures from another regular world, just as Ronald had come to this world from Earth?

"Fury, keep up." Ronald, slowed by his discovery, heard Halbes swimming ahead, proactively calling out to him, "If you really wish to make haste, don’t slow down here."

"Coming."

Ronald nodded and quickly caught up with Halbes’s figure.

The things the mermaid said before seemed to be largely true. The flashlight provided minimal illumination underwater, but she swam straight toward a specific direction as if she had a clear target.

Just as they were diving deeper for a few minutes, the situation suddenly changed.

Halbes stopped moving, her eyes anxiously scanning the surroundings.

"Wulin people, do you have any humanoid species in your seas that move in groups?"

"Is something approaching us?" Ronald immediately asked.

"There are quite a number, and the sea is warning me that they do not harbor good intentions. They must be creatures native to your waters."

"..."

Ronald pondered for a few seconds before shaking his head honestly:

"Sorry, I don’t have extensive knowledge of the ocean. If I had to guess, could it be some kind of school of fish that hunts in groups?"

Hearing Ronald’s response, a trace of dissatisfaction was evident on the mermaid’s face.

"Wulin people, the sea deserves awe and pursuit."

"As a wizard, I suggest you learn more about these matters in the future, it certainly won’t be a mistake."

"For now, stick close to me. Let’s speed up and avoid them."

After briefly stating her opinion, Halbes immediately swam faster towards the depths of the sea, with Ronald following closely behind.

However, after barely a dozen seconds, Halbes slowed down again.

"No, they’re changing direction and heading towards us!"

"Prepare for battle!"

Underwater, Ronald was now frowning.

The ’Fury’ hidden in his clothing didn’t give him any warning; hence, the enemy mentioned by Halbes was not human. Furthermore, in the pitch-black waters below, his visibility was limited to the range of the flashlight, with only vague shadows visible elsewhere.

He could, at any time, activate his power to fly upward.

But if he made such a choice, the fragile connection established with the mermaid would be immediately lost.

"Here they come!"

Before Ronald could think further, Halbes abruptly alerted him, shining the light source to their left.

Then, a grotesque monster appeared there.

This creature had limbs similar to humans, but with sharp tips, and its skin was covered in a layer of dark blue thick scales. Beneath the two large eyes that occupied half of its head were vicious jaws with exposed sharp teeth.

Ronald recognized where this creature came from.

— Hunters.

A marine creature that, according to coastal residents’ tales from his world, delighted in feasting on human innards. This creature’s skin was incredibly tough, making it both powerful and fast in water.

Ronald had only discovered the legend of these creatures by chance during his time in Berenwich.

Now faced with these swiftly approaching Hunters, which clearly bore malice,

He urgently yelled to Halbes:

"These are the Hunters, marine creatures with hard scales and decent speed and strength; be careful not to get caught!"

The mermaid tucked the flashlight under her arm, her expression dissatisfied as she formed a unique gesture with her hands:

"The sea creatures born from your waters are truly unsightly!"

The next second.

An intense Magic Fluctuation immediately emanated from Halbes!
