Mystic Overlord: Reading Gives Strength -
Chapter 284 - 283: Leisurely Life
Chapter 284: Chapter 283: Leisurely Life
In the afternoon following the onset of spring, on the third floor of an apartment by the Wis River.
An elderly woman dressed in a long robe was sitting comfortably in a chair on the balcony, holding up her teacup and saying to the outside:
"Mr. Ronald, this machine-processed tea tastes nothing like the imagined taste of rust. It’s completely different from what I expected."
Immediately after, the keen-eared Ronald on the balcony next door heard this sigh.
Leaning back fully in his newly purchased recliner, he replied indifferently:
"Well... that’s probably because the tea manufacturing technology is quite good."
As his voice trailed off, the neighboring old witch happily responded:
"I really do love the Springs’ tea."
"Mr. Ronald, let’s have those friends downstairs buy some other brands of tea for us sometime."
Ronald remained lying in his chair, not even getting up; he just tilted his head slightly and immediately saw a man beside the river who had been fishing stand up and disappear into the distance on the riverbank.
No need to think too hard.
The investigators around, having heard the old witch’s remarks, had already set off to buy tea.
Flipping to the next page of the book in his hand, Ronald then remarked:
"Ms. Theresa, you sure know how to make use of people."
The old witch immediately replied:
"Well, I don’t come here very often, do I?"
"..."
It’s quite strange when you think about it.
Since arriving in Springs, the old witch seemed to have no intention of leaving the house at all, spending her days in idle chat in this apartment.
Such behavior was as if she had given up the pursuit of the "Original Witches’ Society" and had decided to retire in this city.
In this way, he was having an intermittent yet homely conversation with the old witch.
Ronald’s gaze shifted back to the book before him.
As the primary force tasked with monitoring the old witch, he naturally could only stay in with her, but his goal of joining the "Book Research Society" was not affected. Every day when coming and going, Mou Li would punctually bring a borrowed book from the library for Ronald.
For instance, the book he was currently reading, "Grand Fairy Tales," had been selected for him by Mou Li from the library the night before.
After reading a bit, Ronald had to acknowledge the professionalism of Mou Li, a member of the "Book Research Society."
When he expressed a desire to understand the history of the mysterious past, Mou Li didn’t bring him the kind of historical travelogues or personal memoirs but chose such a collection of fairy tales that was fairly recent and even had a living author.
To the average person, after looking at this book of fairy tales, they might just see it as entertaining reading material, but to someone like Ronald, who was studying the history of the mysterious side, many things within it were of great value.
Like this passage.
— "After twenty-seven days and nights, the warrior was led by the gods, broke out from the twelfth gate of the high mountain fortress, and returned to the human world once more! After saving a young and beautiful noble girl from the jaws of beasts, the girl fell in love with the warrior. She was willing to follow the warrior through any adversity."
This passage was actually a true depiction of a mystic’s story.
In a previous book, Ronald had learned about a stronghold of the mystic side once referred to as the high mountain fortress. During the Dark Age, it was the most important academy system for human Casters, characterized by its twelve impregnable gates.
And the last record of this place was its demise in an unprecedented battle.
Now looking at what this book of myths said: ’the warrior was led by the gods.’
Making some bold associations, Ronald might have already been able to guess some events from the Dark Age.
However, just then, a voice gradually approached Ronald from the direction of the balcony:
"Hey, it’s ’Grand Fairy Tales’."
"Ronald, are you still interested in this kind of stuff?"
"..."
In the ensuing silence, Ronald looked up.
Despite having spent some time with the Grand Witch, he still hadn’t expected her to pull off this kind of stunt.
Her face wore a benign smile as she manipulated her aged body.
The leader of the "Twelve Witches" school and the holder of the original tome, the Grand Witch was now clutching the balcony wall and shakily shuffling towards Ronald.
That body, which seemed like it could be toppled by a gust of wind, was now moving its feet with all its might.
Slap—
"..."
Amid the silence, Ronald snapped the book shut with one hand.
Although he remained lying on the chair without standing up, his fingers were poised and ready.
Should the Grand Witch slip even slightly, he would trigger the power of ’Angel’, letting the clothes hanging on the balcony wrap around her and bring her back.
But Ronald was worrying needlessly.
Even in her sixties or seventies, the Grand Witch’s eyes were still bright, and her footsteps were sure, not slipping due to old age or weakness. She moved step by step towards Ronald, and miraculously, she made it without a hitch.
"Huff—"
"That was quite a thrill."
Having successfully jumped over to Ronald’s side, the Grand Witch sat back without any concern for appearances, catching her breath as she chatted with Ronald:
"If it were those little girls or an investigator in front of me, they’d rush to help as soon as they saw my actions."
Ronald shrugged his shoulders and then picked up the book to open it again:
"But I am neither a little girl nor an investigator."
"I’m here simply to deal with my own work."
Hearing Ronald’s indifferent tone, the smile on the Grand Witch’s face grew wider.
Taking a couple of breaths to recover, she stood up from the ground, walked straight to Ronald, and then turned her gaze to the book in his hands.
After looking with interest for a while, the Grand Witch finally spoke:
"A lot of the content in this fairy tale is adapted from our own history."
"Would Ronald actually be interested in these things, at his age and with an original tome in hand?"
Ronald wrinkled his nose slightly.
However, it was not something shameful, and he had no intention of hiding his thoughts from others.
So, Ronald candidly replied:
"I need to understand a lot about past history now, including things about that era."
"..."
Hearing such a response, the eyes of the Grand Witch lit up.
She simply waved her hand, and a solid-seeming breeze carried over a chair from inside Ronald’s house onto the balcony.
Sitting down casually, the Grand Witch then continued:
"In this regard, I am quite formidable. Mr. Ronald, wouldn’t you consider asking for my advice?"
