Mystic Overlord: Reading Gives Strength -
Chapter 282 - 281: The Great Witch
Chapter 282: Chapter 281: The Great Witch
After successfully laying the girl down without a hitch,
in just two or three breaths’ time, a plainly dressed individual walked up beside the platform and took the unconscious girl from Ronald’s hands.
"Miss, Miss, what’s the matter with you?"
"Quick, take the lady to the hospital, she seems to have fainted from anemia again!"
With a covert gesture, the man showed Ronald his investigator badge, and then, with an impeccably convincing act, easily whisked the comatose girl away without any complications.
It was foreseeable.
After being taken away by the investigator, this fellow was bound to meet an unpleasant fate.
But because of this little episode, Ronald missed the chance to keep an eye on the train, and during this time, the sound of light footsteps had already approached him amidst the crowd disembarking from the train.
"Are you Mr. Ronald?" came the gentle, elderly voice behind him, and Ronald immediately turned around.
This... is the Grand Witch?
Standing behind Ronald was a lady who looked to be in her sixties or seventies. Despite her white hair and the signs of age on her face, she had taken great care of her health, and her skin even showed a healthy flush.
Had time been reversed, this lady would have been a great beauty in her youth.
Ronald gave the old woman a once-over. She was also dressed very simply: aside from a loose and comfortable black coat, she wore nothing but a shawl.
Had Ronald not been informed in advance, he would have taken this elderly woman for an ordinary passerby.
He bowed slightly, and greeted her,
"Hello."
"I am Ronald Adler, may I ask if you are..."
The old lady nodded slightly, answering as she turned around:
"I am Theresa, Theresa Russell."
"Being fellow book holders, Mr. Ronald, just calling me by my name will do."
While speaking to Ronald, the Grand Witch’s gaze remained fixed on the train behind him, her eyes flickering with deep astonishment and admiration.
Observing the Grand Witch facing away from him, Ronald raised an eyebrow and stepped forward to ask,
"Miss Theresa, is there something on the train that should be noted?"
The Grand Witch laughed softly and shook her head:
"Hehe."
"Nothing much, just the musings of an old person."
"After spending so much time at the headquarters, I never expected that upon venturing out to Springs again, the city would be completely different from when I last visited, becoming something beyond my imagination."
Was this her choice...
Hearing the complex nostalgia in the Grand Witch’s voice, Ronald softly asked,
"Did you visit Springs in the past, Miss Theresa?"
The Grand Witch nodded:
"Yes, over forty years ago, that was my first visit to Springs."
"Back then I was a newcomer, hardly understanding the situation here, thinking it was just an ordinary capital, and it remained that way until I left."
"But now, it truly seems like a miraculous affair..."
While speaking, the Grand Witch’s eyes moved away from the train and gradually glazed over, her pupils shifting to peer distantly at something afar.
Seeing her in this state, Ronald softly inquired,
"Miss Theresa, are you reminiscing about the past?"
The Grand Witch shook her head:
"Not the past, what I miss are my old friends and the various people I’ve interacted with..."
Ronald nodded in understanding, and it was at this moment that the Grand Witch ended her reflection and turned her gaze toward the platform exit:
"Mr. Ronald, shall we go now?"
Ronald took a step forward, leading the Grand Witch outside:
"Please follow me."
"For now, let’s head to the Practical Power Communication Company to register."
The Grand Witch nodded thoughtfully,
"Is that what it’s called now?"
"..."
She immediately followed Ronald’s stride, the elderly Caster’s sprightly steps showing none of the frailty expected of her age.
The pair left the train station and took a carriage, with Ronald hailing a ride much faster than his previous attempts.
The journey was smooth sailing.
It seemed that besides the Caster who had tried to ambush the Grand Witch at the train station, the "Primal Witch Council" had sent no one else to attack them.
And thus, as the Grand Witch entered the Practical Power Communication Company with Ronald by her side, Ronald witnessed the most extravagant ’welcome ceremony’ he had ever seen.
Though there was no overt fanfare, once they entered the lobby, at least six different directions immediately shifted their gazes onto them, following their movements and never moving away for even a moment.
This was to be expected.
Two original text holders appearing at the same time would attract attention anywhere, let alone at the central offices of the Intelligence Department.
Ronald could even guess.
Among these onlookers, in addition to the department’s own personnel, there would undoubtedly be spies from other forces.
It was predictable that in the days to come,
he himself might have to live alongside these watchful eyes for a while.
While Ronald was somewhat pensive, a man and a woman approached from the ’power company’ reception and bowed to both the Grand Witch and Ronald.
"The two of you, your appointment is ready."
"Please come with us."
With such a situation unfolding, the Grand Witch nodded solemnly, then followed behind them, appearing quite accustomed to the treatment she was receiving.
After that, everything proceeded according to plan.
In a luxurious office, a man wearing a black robe was seated on a sofa waiting for their arrival.
This man, who was in his forties, held a somber gaze that could send shivers down the spine of anyone he looked at.
He was one of the three division directors of the Intelligence Department, Hunter’s Ville, specifically responsible for intelligence work.
Being received by such a figure,
reflected the department’s regard for the Grand Witch.
As one of the three division directors, Hunter’s Ville’s capabilities went without saying.
Within only half an hour, the majority of which consisted of casual conversation laced with reminiscences and allusions full of implications, the Grand Witch had completed her registration process after entering Springs.
But after Ronald and the Grand Witch finished the registration, and together left the headquarters of the Intelligence Department,
an unexpected question reached Ronald’s ears.
Standing on the streets of Springs, the Grand Witch observed the wide streets and asked Ronald with a smile:
"Mr. Ronald, shall we visit your house first?"
