Chapter 104 Inheritance Dispute
Chapter 104: Chapter 104 Inheritance Dispute
Ron Avenue?
Hearing the name he had just visited the day before, Ronald bade farewell to the detective apprentice and immediately set off.
Considering the time issue, he even took off his hat and opened his coat, pretending to be an ordinary pedestrian and hailing a rented horse-drawn carriage from the roadside.
The speed of the horse-drawn carriage was certainly much faster than simply walking on foot.
It didn’t take long for Ronald to arrive at 51 Ron Avenue.
After paying the fare to the driver, Ronald adjusted his collar and took a quick look around.
This place was only a short distance from the leather shop he visited yesterday.
But what was astonishing was that in the brief walk of less than two hundred meters, there had been a significant change in the environment of the surrounding streets.
The number of workers walking the streets had greatly decreased, and even the cleanliness of the road was starkly different, with clean streets, quiet surroundings, and few pedestrians.
In an area housing roughly a dozen or so households, there was a sharp contrast with the other parts of Ron Avenue. While the other areas were almost all civilian traders or zones where workers operated, this particular area was distinctly different.
Gazing at this special residential cluster located in the working district, Ronald sighed quietly.
Living in such a place, it’s no wonder there were estate disputes.
Without much hesitation, Ronald pulled out his folded hat, put it on, and then stepped forward to knock on the door.
Knock, knock, knock—
"Is anybody there?"
A few seconds later, he heard footsteps approaching the door from inside the house.
Accompanied by a ’click’, a small window embedded in the door was opened from the inside.
In this world, inventions like peepholes hadn’t appeared yet, so the purpose of this contraption was to help the residents safely observe the outside.
At this moment, a pair of somewhat cloudy eyes peered through the opening, sizing up Ronald outside.
After watching for a few seconds, the person inside asked,
"Excuse me, sir, may I ask who you are...?"
Ronald nodded and took a couple of steps back to let the person see his full figure before speaking:
"Hello."
"I’m here to see Mr. Swift. There’s an urgent matter concerning his family that needs to be communicated."
"..."
"Just a moment, I’ll call him."
After a few seconds of thought, the person simply replied to Ronald with a sentence and closed the small window, disappearing behind the door.
This time it took about two minutes before Ronald again heard someone moving towards the door.
Once more, the ’click’ of the small window being opened was the first sound to be heard.
This time, however, the person who appeared behind the small window was Swift himself.
Seeing Ronald, in a greatcoat and wide-brimmed hat, the attire of an investigator, through the small window, the detective raised his eyebrows in surprise:
"Ronald?"
"What brings you here?"
It was also due to the keen nature of his detective work that Swift surmised something special had occurred. Without waiting for Ronald to answer his question, Swift hurriedly opened the door.
"Come in, let’s talk inside."
Ronald stepped over the threshold into the house, then glanced around.
Aside from the old man who had accompanied the detective to the door, there were no other excess people nearby.
Then, he leaned in close to Swift and whispered:
"There’s no time to waste; you had better get moving quickly."
"A cult magician launched a sudden attack on the Blenheim Investigation Bureau headquarters this morning. The scene is in chaos, the Bureau needs to use your identity for some cover-up while also helping to assess the situation."
"Ha?"
The detective uttered a quiet exclamation of confusion.
Hearing the situation described in a low voice by Ronald, he thought at first he may have misheard.
Someone dared to attack the Blenheim Investigation Bureau?
Since he started working in Blenheim...
No, rather, since Swift was born into this world, there had never been an incident of this magnitude at the Blenheim Investigation Bureau.
As the violent law enforcement agency of the Greed mystical side, the reputation of the Bureau had always hung over the heads of the mystics like the Sword of Damocles.
People typically steer clear of the Blenheim Investigation Bureau—who would dare attack such an institution?
But seeing Ronald’s earnest expression and his distinctive investigator attire, Swift had no choice but to believe him.
After a few seconds of thought, his gaze quickly swept over the elderly man beside him.
Once he confirmed the other party wasn’t eavesdropping, he whispered to Ronald,
"Can you talk about the specifics now?"
Ronald immediately replied,
"We’ll discuss the details on the way, but for now, know this—the expulsion spell at the main entrance of the bureau has completely failed, and it’s beyond repair."
"..."
"That really is terrible."
Swift could almost picture the exaggerated scene.
For a spell at the bureau’s main entrance to fail beyond repair, the situation on-site must be dire.
Considering the location of the bureau on Long Beach Street...
From any perspective, this was a bona fide disaster!
Turning to look at the old man watching them, Swift then said,
"Mr. Jin, I have an emergency to attend to with this friend."
"Please let Mrs. Case know that I will be back..."
"Mr. Swift!" Hearing the detective’s words, the old man abandoned his prior silence and said urgently, "Madam invited you here specifically to perfectly handle this estate dispute."
"I presume to guess..."
"You’re not planning to flee the scene, are you?"
"Oh?"
Faced with such an inquiry, Swift’s expression darkened, and he raised an eyebrow in displeasure.
He didn’t bother to explain further but instead extended an invitation to Ronald beside him,
"Ronald, would you mind catching a bit of drama before we leave?"
"It’ll only take a few minutes."
Ronald nodded,
"Of course, no problem."
Seeing Ronald’s agreement, Swift had no intention of engaging the old man any further; he turned and led the way into the house.
Following the detective inside, Ronald saw a complex scene in the hall.
Around a table in the center, six people stood vigil.
There were men and women, the old and the young.
Judging by their black and white garb, it was evident an important family member had recently passed away.
Besides them, two formally dressed individuals stood to the side.
Considering it was an estate dispute, they were likely public notaries or similar professionals.
As Swift walked in with Ronald, a woman sitting in the principal seat immediately spoke,
"Mr. Swift, have you finished your business?"
"Mrs. Case," the detective began with a polite nod, then continued, "Today, I’m faced with an exceptionally urgent matter that needs my attention."
"May I request a slight delay?"
In his speech, Swift stressed the urgency and also looked imploringly at her with sincere eyes.
However, upon hearing the detective’s words, someone immediately began to complain discontentedly,
"Mr. Swift!"
"We hired you to resolve the issue quickly, don’t make everyone uncomfortable!"
"..."
Swift gave the complainer an ice-cold glare.
Then, he turned again to the woman in the principal seat,
"What do you think, madam?"
"..."
After a moment of contemplation, although the woman appeared torn, she finally spoke,
"Mr. Swift, please help us resolve our issue first."
