My Wife is a Dead Villainess, and I'm Her Living Weapon -
Chapter 140: Guild
Chapter 140: Guild
"Lucian" rolled his eyes and repeated his statement once more for the camera.
"Yes, I’m certain. Elian Reed washes his hands with his left hand over his right. He didn’t use the dryer; he wiped his hands on his pants. No, he didn’t fix his hair. And no, I didn’t see him check his phone."
Kate Summers grinned at the camera. "There you have it—the latest scoop on how the man of the hour uses a public restroom. Be sure to tune in next time for our new documentary: Elian Reed—The Hero and the Man!"
Elian had trouble maintaining his smile and wanted to reach out and strangle the woman before him. But as he was currently Lucian, he had to maintain his act.
The crap I have to do to get some peace around here.
"That’s all for me; this is Kate Summers, live in Crestfall City for Channel 9 News."
"And—cut. That was a good take, Kate; this info is gold. We should run it in the primetime slot," the cameraman suggested with a greedy smile.
"Hell yeah, it is. Half the other stations couldn’t even get a witness. none of the people could even look at Elian Reed." She then turned to Elian and took out a fifty-crown bill along with a business card. "Thanks, sugar. You’re cute. If you’ve got any more stories to tell, let me know."
Kate winked while slipping both the money and the card into his shirt pocket. Elian, however, frowned in disgust at the gesture.
"Sorry, I doubt that I would be so lucky to meet Mr. Reed again," he snapped.
"Oh, such a shame." The reporter replied with a shrug. She looked up and smiled at Elian while walking away. "Well, that may be true; still, I like your face. If you’re ever looking for a casual hookup, just let me know, sugar."
"Sorry. Not interested," Elian muttered. "I’m married."
Kate’s playful gestures vanished instantly. In their place was a woman brimming with anger and hostility.
"Tch. You think you’re some big shot just ’cause you met a celebrity? Get over yourself. I’m Kate Summers—you’d be lucky to be my pet."
Without a second glance, Kate walked away. Her cameraman smiled apologetically at Elian and quickly followed her. Their destination was the convenience store Elian had just left. There were other news teams also staking out the place.
It was the first time the golem saw what popularity and celebrity worship could do to a community.
I find it all the more irritating that I am the one they want to know about.
"I guess I should be glad this is all they wanted," the Tyrant exclaimed, exhausted.
Being left alone, he slipped out of the stakeout and pulled out a smartphone. It was the top-of-the-line unit, a gift from Bianca. Elian booted it up and marveled at the look and feel; it was leagues above what he had had before.
Filled with gratitude for Bianca, he quickly picked the web browser app and searched for where Crestfall City’s Breaker building was. When he found the place, he switched to the navigation app and walked.
As he did, Elian pulled out the white card that had his picture along with his Lucian information. The card was fairly simple and listed only one thing on the right side...
"Breaker Applicant."
Seeing the words in bright red letters filled Elian with a complicated feeling. He wanted to be part of the breakers in his youth. But now it seemed backwards; he had the power to rule a city, but he still wasn’t part of the Breakers at least not officially.
"Fine. We are in severe need of Breakers. I will let your family under the exception of recruitment. Report to one of the Breaker offices within five days, or we will throw you out."
The immigration officer vouched for them despite their cover story. Elian and Bianca intentionally used human psychology to get into the city by building rapport with Archie.
And now Elian wanted to go through the process all to know how powerful he was by human standards.
"It is a shame Bianca is still out. Otherwise, she would most likely enjoy this."
Feeling lonely, Elian pulled out Bianca’s soulgem necklace and gingerly wiped it with a handkerchief. It was amazing that this little ball housed the woman he cherished more than his own life.
"I wonder if she’d like being a Breaker..."
He imagined it—missions together, arguments over loot, teasing over bounty posters. They would be in constant danger but would have an exciting life. In that world, Elian and Bianca were not all-powerful but were instead ordinary. Then the delusion turned for the worse.
"Hmm. While adventuring with your wife sounds sexy, it is also terrifying. If I make a mistake or fight someone stronger, Bianca will be in danger. Maybe it would be better for her to stay at home?"
Trying to imagine the feeling, Elian let his mind wander.
It envisioned a small, quaint house in the suburbs.
A beat-up sedan. Bianca in soft clothes. A quiet welcome home after a long day.
"Welcome back," she’d say.
And he’d hold her, kiss her and make love to her. They would share a meal, talk about their mundane days, and make babies in the bedroom. A few months down the line, Bianca would get pregnant, and their journey as parents would begin.
"..."
Somehow, Elian’s heart grew happy at the second delusion. When it ended, it filled his heart with sadness.
In such a life, they might have worried about money, retirement, and their kids, but that would be it. There wouldn’t be a need for fighting, conquest, and constant danger from monsters and revolutions.
It seemed perfect. Sadly, it was a life that there would never be.
Now that the Earth knew of Elian and Bianca, they were already celebrities through and through. He just experienced how rabid the public was to know the details of his life. What more if they actually started stalking him with the paparazzi?
A bit irritated, Elian kissed Bianca’s soulgem tenderly before putting it back into his chest. He buried the whole necklace in his Living Metal storage space as he made his way to the Breaker office.
When he finally got there, all he saw was a dilapidated office building.
"Well, this place has seen better days," he quipped.
Elian entered the Breaker office and saw that it was practically deserted.
The internal layout looked like a bank where tellers were stationed horizontally in booths. There were spaces and guide rails indicating where people used to line up. Only right now there weren’t any.
Although he was surprised, the Tyrant looked at the security guard by the door and showed the man his card.
"Excuse me, I was sent here as a Breaker applicant; where is everyone?"
"You’re bout a few days late, boy," the guard said in low spirits. "This building here is the Crestfall breaker office. When the Big Three made their announcements earlier, all the active Breakers belonging to them were ordered to leave."
The guard gestured to the empty building.
"All Breakers are hired by the Big Three. And anyone who tries to make it on their own is pressured and often assassinated. What you see now is the result. Rather than fall with the city, the Breakers simply left. Cowards, the lot of them."
Although Elian didn’t see it happen, he could understand. Even as a boy, he knew of the politics between the big three. If one wanted to grow as a Breaker, getting contracted by one of the three best companies was practically mandatory.
Technically, you could try to make it on your own, but hardly anyone succeeds.
Shaking his daydreams out of his mind, Elian nodded at the guard’s explanation and changed the topic.
"That is a shame, but I need to get this card stamped or approved or something. Otherwise, I might get deported from the city and thrown in the streets," Elian explained.
"Oh? You’re an immigrant?"
"Yeah, I am. My wife is pregnant, so I need a job to stay here."
"Tough luck. Go to counter 1; that is the only one remaining," the guard advised.
Elian thanked the man and made his way.
There was a woman behind the counter. She was beautiful and had slanted eyes, but she had severe eye bags and looked like she had been awake for a week.
The Tyrant couldn’t help but pity the woman for her pallor and lack of vitality.
"I am sorry; are you all right?" he asked.
However, the woman looked at Elian and smiled.
"Hello! If you are looking for work, I would have to say that we don’t have any. Due to the Big Three blacklisting this city, we no longer have any Breakers available, nor could we even facilitate their quests as no Earth faction wants to let us use its system."
Elian thought for a moment and understood. He then made his decision.
"I see. Maybe it is for the best, then. I have come as a representative."
"A representative?" the woman asked as she tilted her head.
"Yeah, I have come to represent the Weapons of Valestra. We wish to open a branch in Crestfall City."
"WHAT?!"
