My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World -
Chapter 92: Winter in the Capital
Chapter 92: Winter in the Capital
Days after my birthday, it started to feel like winter was arriving in the kingdom.
While the town happily started to set up all their preparations for the cold weather, I couldn’t help but feel a little sad, knowing that I wouldn’t be spending that much time with Melina after the season.
Our meeting with the king had been postponed until now, so we had to go back to the capital in a few days.
The alchemists refused the option to go back to their homes in the capital during winter. They didn’t even want to stay in my house in End Town. Instead, they all wanted to stay in the tree house.
They had heard from Reinar that new materials sprouted during winter, and every single one of the alchemists was excited about the prospect of going out in the cold to look for new ingredients.
They were all still protected by shadow dogs and demon spiders, so at the very least, I didn’t feel like I was leaving them in the cold wilderness to fend for themselves. Besides, the tree house had all the enchantments and necessities that they could possibly need.
The Duke and Duchess of Glorya already knew this since Reinar had sent them a letter explaining that he was too deep into his research to go back home at the moment.
In town, I talked with Jackson and Karla, letting them know that I would speak with the king to look for a suitable person who could take Jackson’s position so he could go adventuring with his partner again.
I didn’t expect the change to be quick, so I asked them to wait until winter was over, to which they had no complaints, saying they were planning on spending the winters in End Town either way since it had become a nice and warm place to spend it at.
After ensuring everything was in order, we packed our things in our void pockets and teleported straight to the capital from End Town, the biggest leap we had taken in a single teleportation spell.
As soon as we got there, we wore the hoods from our ponchos to conceal ourselves from the citizens. Although they didn’t know me, I just wore it out of solidarity with the princess.
Even the maids had to wear a cloak since, apparently, lots of people recognized them as the battle-maids from the royal family. In the end, we made it to the castle without any distractions.
Melina removed her hood, prompting the guards to open the gates as another ran inside to inform the other servants of the princess’s arrival.
We were sent to a waiting room where the king and queen would meet us, and I expected to be there for a while, but not even five minutes later, the royal family arrived to greet us.
Melina’s little sister, Alexandra, ran inside the room to hug her, followed by her mother and father.
After their reunion, the family turned to look at me and Vespera, and as I waved my hand at them in a friendly manner, the queen approached me and hugged me, too.
It was definitely unexpected, but the rest of the royal family and servants seemed to be okay with it, as none of them made a fuss about the queen being so friendly with me.
The servants took us all to the garden, where they had prepared a meal and some tea for us, and during that time, the king told me that the queen and the 3rd princess had been going around the castle telling everyone about my adventures with Melina.
’Ah, so that’s why none of them cared that the queen hugged me in front of everyone...’ I thought.
"You had become quite an enigma for the people of the city..." the king said.
He explained that, eventually, the servant’s rumors reached the streets, and everyone wondered about the identity of the princess’s companion. To top it all off, the rumors only strengthened after our discovery of the mithril mine.
The king said that he wanted to reward us in front of the people of the capital. However, he wanted to ask me first if I was comfortable, knowing that I liked keeping my identity a secret.
Truth be told, if he had asked me to do this a year ago, I would have declined right on the spot.
When I was first brought to this world, I asked to be sent away from people because I didn’t want to deal with them. However, somehow, I ended up befriending so many incredible people that I didn’t mind the interactions at all.
It was obvious that my decision to be sent somewhere where I could be alone was made out of pure sadness and depression, making me feel glad that Phelena saw right through me and sent me to End Forest, where I eventually met my companions.
With that in mind, I agreed to be part of the ceremony, surprising even Melina, who sat beside me drinking tea.
"Are you sure?" The king asked, astonished at my response.
"Well, I’m still keeping some of my information hidden. But if all I have to do is show my face, then I don’t mind it at all." I replied, still wanting to keep the fact that I was a demigod a secret from the people.
Honestly, I didn’t feel like a demigod, but if people believed that, then there was nothing I could do to convince them otherwise.
"Then it is settled! Let us have the ceremony on the day of Melina’s birthday." the king said with enthusiasm.
After planning the event, the queen started discussing with the princess her enrollment in the academy. From what she said, the exam would take place three days after the knight’s tournament.
The knight’s tournament was a competition held every few years in the kingdom, where all of the different knight orders sparred with each other in order to see who was the strongest.
It was the same competition that had left the impression that the 4th order, the one stationed in our town, was the weakest of them all. However, I knew that the next tournament would be different.
During that time, Yoru played catch with Alexandra, who joyfully petted him every time he brought back the stick.
Seeing my companion lying on his back as the little girl scratched his belly warmed my heart a little. It was simply a wholesome scene for anyone’s eyes.
In fact, I think I saw one of the servants shedding a tear, commenting on how cute the little princess was.
After the long talks, we were shown to our rooms in the castle. Vespera had gotten her own room and butler, but she respectfully declined, saying she wanted to stay in my room instead.
As I lay in bed, I looked at the gem on my necklace and pondered what I could give the princess as a birthday gift.
Once she attended the academy, we probably wouldn’t see each other that often.
’There has to be something I can do...’ I thought with a hint of sadness.
At that moment, the light bulb on top of my head lit up as I jumped out of bed, startling both my companions.
"Let’s go to End Forest real quick," I said, making both of them look at me confused. Nonetheless, they didn’t ask any questions and made contact with me as I teleported to the tree house.
"Reinar!" I yelled.
After loud noises came from inside the house as if someone had fallen off the stairs, Reinar opened the door with a smile and an empty potion vial in his hand.
"Ichiro, I thought you were in the capital," he said.
"I’ll go back before the night ends. I wanted to check something here, though..." I said, making him curious about my endeavor.
I told Reinar that I was looking for a material that could hold magic. Something like the "Kraken tear pearl" that I was wearing, although not as potent.
However, he told me that most gemstones could hold a certain amount of magic. Stuff like sapphires and rubies were the most common ones that people used.
"Hmm, and is it possible to enchant these gemstones?" I asked.
"It would depend on the enchantment. I doubt a common gemstone could hold a powerful spell from you or Melina..." he elaborated.
However, that didn’t mess with my idea.
My plan was to create a brand new enchantment along with a new type of magic. If I could create something like "sound magic," then I would be able to produce something resembling a phone.
Magic worked with imagination, after all. Gravity magic was created by me simply by imagining the theory and putting it into practice using magic.
If something that was considered a theory worked perfectly with magic, then I didn’t see a reason why it wouldn’t work with sound waves, which were an actual real thing and not a theory.
Now that I had confirmed that common gemstones could hold a small amount of magic, I thanked Reinar for the help and teleported back to my room in the castle without elaborating why I went all the way there to ask a simple question.
