My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World
Chapter 75: The Devil, Armaros

Chapter 75: The Devil, Armaros

After I was done checking Garret’s memories, he fell unconscious, so we took him to the barracks without any resident seeing us.

Commander Valentina imprisoned Garret in a high-security cell underground, still wearing the restraining jacket that Vespera had made, and tied him up with chains to a chair.

It may have seemed a bit too excessive, but Garret’s body was too strong to allow him to roam free in a cell.

As the possessed commander slept in his cell, I told Valentina what I had seen without getting into details about how I managed to see his memories.

In his memory, the devil called himself Armaros, which initially sounded familiar to me. Trying my best to recall where I had heard the name before, I remembered that the Goblin King mentioned it during our fight.

Back then, I didn’t pay much attention to what the monster said since I thought he was just spewing trash, but now I was starting to wonder how long Armaros had been trying to mess with us.

Vespera told us that every devil had their own unique ability that differentiated them from the rest. However, I couldn’t see any information regarding his ability when I checked Garret’s memories.

"Armaros took advantage of Garret’s doubts about his own strength. That was enough to allow the devil to possess him." I explained to the group.

My worries lay mainly with the other knights. They probably felt similar to their commander in terms of strength.

The people they constantly bullied into believing they were weak were on a completely different level than them, and if it weren’t for those knights that I trained, some of them would have perished in the fight against the Kraken.

Valentina issued an order to all of the knights, telling them that nobody was allowed to leave the premises of the barracks.

Her plan was actually quite good. If Armaros wanted to control more knights, he would have to show himself in the barracks again.

If she allowed the knights to patrol wherever and split up, then the devil would have an easier time picking them individually.

However, that also meant that if we confronted Armaros, it would be right in the middle of the city, as that was where the barracks were located.

"I understand how Garret feels. I’ll make sure no other knight gets possessed..." Valentina said.

"Can you elaborate? What is it that is making you doubt so much?" I asked, although I already had an idea what it was.

"Heh, isn’t it obvious? It’s frustrating to think that we can’t protect the princess of our own kingdom..." she said.

"Is that all?" I asked again.

Valentina scoffed. "No, it’s not all. It’s also frustrating to have an unknown kid come in and disrespect our orders while demonstrating a power that could wipe us out..." she continued.

"Mhmm, and what else?" I asked while nodding in agreement.

"And it’s also frustrating that the knights we deemed as the weakest are now strong enough to take on an entire order with just three of them!" she exclaimed, now finishing her confession.

’Good...’ I thought. We needed Valentina to say her insecurities aloud for the devil to hear.

I wasn’t planning on letting her get hurt, but we needed a bait, and she seemed like the perfect candidate.

"Alright then. We are going to keep looking for Armaros while you stay here..." I said to Valentina after she had issued her commands to the other knights.

Melina looked at me with an arched eyebrow, probably thinking it was dangerous to leave the knights alone in the barracks. And it was.

I knew for a fact that if we stayed there, Armaros wouldn’t show up. But, if we made everyone believe that we had left the building, there was a high chance he would return.

Valentina looked a bit shocked at my statement, but wanting to act like she was strong enough to take care of the devil, she said she would guard Garret’s cell.

After leaving the place, I asked Vespera if she could bring some of her demon spiders to guard the area around the barracks. However, she said her demon spiders would probably cause a commotion if anyone saw them.

To solve her problem, she used her "minion creation" skill to make tiny spiders from her hands that could act as vigilantes for the surrounding area.

I asked Yoru to stay hidden in the shadows around Valentina’s zone and immediately alert me if anything happened.

As for the princess and me, we flew around the city until nighttime just to make sure that all of the knights were at the barracks and not roaming around.

Once the two moons were visible in the sky, we returned to the barracks and stood at the top of the buildings surrounding it.

"Huh, it’s a full moon tonight..." I muttered to Melina as I stared at the big moon in the sky.

The small moon was always full, so it wasn’t that impressive, but the large one looked incredibly shiny that night.

A few minutes later, Melina and I were sitting down on the rooftops, looking at the stars while waiting for a signal from either my companions or the knights.

It felt weird since I was kind of enjoying myself in the middle of a difficult situation where a devil could attack at any moment.

["The blond knight is awake..."] said Yoru with telepathy, breaking the peaceful moment.

["How does he look?"] I asked.

["He is not moving. The female knight is on guard, asking him questions."] He explained.

["Look."] Yoru said, as my vision started to get hazy and dark.

I blinked a few times and realized that the scene before me was Yoru’s point of view.

["What the-...? When did you learn this, Yoru?"] I asked since this was a completely new spell where he could share his vision with me.

["Just now!"] he answered.

As I thought about how awesome my companion was, I heard the conversation between Valentina and the possessed Garret.

"Why, Garret!?" she exclaimed. But Garret was looking down, groaning as the dark energy around his body became visible.

"I... Did not...-" the blonde man tried to articulate, but his words were cut short and replaced.

"For power..." he muttered, his voice deeper as if he was using some voice-changing module.

The dark aura around him grew in power, making Valentina step back a few meters with caution, but Garret wasn’t able to break Vespera’s fabric, keeping him in his spot as he huffed after using so much energy.

Valentina lowered her sword with pity showing in her eyes, and at that moment, I felt the strange and intimidating sensation, cutting Yoru’s spell and bringing me back to my own point of view.

"What happened?" Melina asked, realizing I had gained consciousness.

"We gotta check on the commander!" I exclaimed as we both used our teleport to bring us to the underground prison where they were located.

Just as we appeared beside Valentina, we found Yoru standing next to her with his hair and tail completely perked up, growling and staring at the devil who was standing next to the immobilized Garret.

The devil slid his fingers across the fabric and easily cut it, releasing the possessed knight from his bind. However, it didn’t attack us mindlessly like last time but simply stood there with his head looking down.

"I take it you are Armaros then..." I said as I finally encountered the ugly being.

The devil gave us an evil grin, showing us his black fangs, and opened his arms solemnly.

"And you must be the rat that has been messing with my plan for some time..." He said, his voice raspy and unsettling.

"Are you acting like you don’t know me? I thought you were my biggest fan after you attacked me from behind like a coward." I said mockingly, trying to divert all his attention to me and away from my group.

However, my joke turned on me once the pressure in the air around us suddenly felt heavier.

"Watch your mouth, rat." The devil said with a commanding and intimidating tone.

Raising his palm and gathering shadow energy in front of him, he shot the same type of projectile he hit me with during the battle with the Kraken. Except this time, Yoru jumped right in the middle of its trajectory and absorbed the whole spell in an instant.

"Huh?" I wondered out loud after seeing Yoru just casually absorb the devil’s attack.

’I guess if his attacks are using shadows, then Yoru can weave them too with his skill...’ I thought, a smile appearing on my face as I had just realized that my companion was Armaro’s weakness.

I was prepared to receive the attack and deflect it. Not that I knew if I could even do that, but I had to try at the very least. However, if Yoru could absorb his attacks, then we had an advantage.

Armaros, appalled at the fact that his shadow spell didn’t reach us, raised his hands and created a more prominent shadow sphere before reshooting it toward us.

This time, however, while Yoru absorbed the shadow, Melina and I flanked the devil from the sides. My bo connecting with his face and Melina’s lightning strike hitting his ribs.
