My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World
Chapter 362: Helena and May

Chapter 362: Helena and May

While we kept walking with the large group of villagers to the place known as The Pit, I kept talking with Helena about her husband, thinking that I could get a clue on how Baelzor’s powers worked.

She told me that she and her family used to live in the capital, which the people of the north called the "Grey Fortress," as the structures were made with a rocky material that was almost impossible to break.

Helena didn’t know the details of how Baelzor managed to control the entire country, but having a soldier for a husband gave her some insight into what was happening.

She said that one day, a man who went by the name of Boris appeared out of nowhere and got accepted by the king to be his new advisor.

Nobody knew who he was or why the king had accepted a random man as his advisor. Still, there was nothing they could do to refute the king’s commands.

After a few years, the king called all of the soldiers and politicians of the country to the castle. However, instead of having the king give a speech, it was Boris who spoke up and revealed his identity.

Once Boris showed his true form as Baelzor the devil, the soldiers and politicians got defensive and were ready to battle the demon right at that moment.

Nonetheless, Baelzor’s magic was already having an effect on them, clouding their minds and filling them with the devil’s commands.

Helena’s husband, whose name was Isak, noticed that all of the soldiers around him were being brainwashed and rushed out of the castle to visit his family and tell them what had happened.

Isak made it in time and managed to blurt out everything. However, as soon as he divulged the entire story, his head started to ache to the point that it made him kneel from the pain.

*ahem* "Sorry... It’s a bit hard to talk about it," said Helena, stopping her story for a moment.

"Would you mind if I see it for myself?" I asked the woman, but she seemed confused about my question.

I explained that I was able to look at her memories, but I would only do something like that if she gave me permission. That way, she wouldn’t have to retell a painful story.

The woman agreed somewhat reluctantly, but it was because she didn’t know how my magic worked.

The rest of the group kept walking while I stayed behind with Helena and her daughter, placing my palm on her forehead and focusing on looking at her memories.

It was nighttime in the capital, and she was at home with her daughter when her husband Isak burst the door open and quickly entered, holding his neck and loudly breathing as if he were in pain.

"Helena. The devil was Boris! All of the soldiers have been brainwashed- ARRGH!" Isak yelled, getting his sentences cut short by the excruciating headache he was feeling.

Helena tried to comfort her husband, but the man slapped her hand away and shouted for her to get back, as he was feeling like he was losing control of his body.

"You need to leave... Quickly!" he shouted, but Helena and her daughter were too confused to understand what was truly happening.

Suddenly, Isak stopped complaining about the pain and looked up at his family with eyes devoid of all emotions.

The glint in his eyes was gone entirely, giving them an opaque color that was pretty creepy.

His expression of despair was erased, and he showed absolutely no emotions as he reached for a kitchen knife on the table beside him.

With a quick motion, Isak tried slashing his wife with the knife, but she managed to avoid it and kick it off his hand skillfully.

’Whoa, I didn’t expect her to be a fighter...’ I thought as I kept witnessing her memories.

Keeping the same expressionless face, Isak tried attacking his wife again, but Helena pushed him to the side and grabbed May in her arms before running away.

After months of wandering around the northern continent, they were taken in by the people of the small settlement where they had been living since then.

When I removed my hand from Helena’s forehead and returned to reality, I saw a small tear coming down her daughter’s cheek, who seemed to remember everything as clearly as her mother.

"I can’t promise anything, but I will try my best to have you two reunite with Isak—the real one," I muttered, and while the little girl seemed more hopeful about my words, Helena was still somewhat skeptical.

Still, I couldn’t blame her for not believing me since they didn’t know who I was or what I had done up until that point.

*Tch...* I scoffed.

’That means that all of those soldiers that the black lightning lion killed were just brainwashed soldiers...’ I thought, trying to control the anger that was flowing inside me.

Helena and May were just two of the few lucky people who escaped the capital when it all went down.

However, others weren’t as lucky, as they either got murdered by their own brainwashed family or were mind-controlled along with them.

When nighttime fell upon our group, we set up a large camp for all the villagers to sleep somewhat comfortably.

Thankfully, we didn’t have a snowstorm that night, or I would have had to build a giant dome for everyone to be warm and cozy.

I wasn’t sleepy, so I stayed awake next to the fire, thinking about the memories I witnessed from Helena.

"You should calm down a little..." said Vespera from behind as she joined me beside the fire.

"Heh, sorry. I always forget that you feel what I feel," I replied.

"That’s not what I mean. Ichiro, it’s okay to feel angry and frustrated, but we need to control ourselves..."

"Do you remember what happened in Guanghua after Vyrazul turned into Melina?" Vespera asked.

"I just don’t want your emotions to put you in danger again..." she continued.

My companion was right. I almost died when I was fighting Vyrazul simply because she transformed into the version of Melina from our past world.

Even when I knew she wasn’t real, my body couldn’t bring itself to fight back, and I ended up being saved by Melina. If she hadn’t been there, it would have been over for me.

"Thanks, Vesp. I’ll try my best to control those emotions. I promise."
