My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World -
Chapter 268: Rockvalley
Chapter 268: Rockvalley
After our group introduced themselves to Dulmar, the dwarf who would be our guide during our visit, he started to walk ahead of us and told us more details about the inner workings of Durinhold.
The dwarven nation was wholly surrounded by the white marble peak mountains, called the White Ring, which is what protected it from outsiders.
Most towns were built inside the mountain. Even though we were above water level, it still felt like we were several feet underground.
At one point, we reached a crossroad in the tunnel and noticed a sign with arrows pointing in different directions with the names of the closest settlements.
"We have to pass Whiteforge, and then we can keep walking towards Rockvalley..." said Dulmar as he kept guiding us.
Whiteforge was the name of one of the towns built inside the mountain, where most of the white marble that was gathered was received and processed.
Dulmar said that, apart from the giant forge in the center of the city, there wasn’t much to see. However, we disagreed with him as soon as we arrived.
The tunnel opened up, and the city known as Whiteforge became fully visible as we came out from a platform that overlooked the territory.
Even though we were inside the mountain, it was fully illuminated, giving us a clear look at the white marble structures and streets that were pretty captivating.
"Ah, I suppose for new visitors, this is a new sight..." Dulmar said, noticing our surprised expressions.
The guide told us that it would take a few more hours of walking in the tunnels until we reached the capital, so we decided to rest at Whiteforge for the rest of the day.
We couldn’t tell what time it was since we were inside the mountain, but I could guess that it was nighttime outside based on how long we had been awake.
The lady dwarf at the inn was incredibly friendly to us, seeing as she hadn’t had visitors from outside the nation for a very long time, and gave us the best rooms she had available.
The following day, we woke up to what felt like early in the morning for us, although we had no way of knowing, and met with Dulmar outside the inn.
Making our way through the dark tunnels, I asked the guard about the secret weapon, but his knowledge was the same as the other dwarves.
"Well, there is nobody alive who has seen the thing in action, so I couldn’t tell you what it does exactly..." he replied.
The dwarves had already spent hundreds of years researching the weapon, but they had trouble reading the ancient scriptures that supposedly went into more detail about its usage.
’Ancient scriptures? Let me guess—it’s English...’ I thought.
After a few more hours of walking in the dark tunnels, the path got a bit steeper, but we could see the light of the surface coming from the exit in the distance.
"That’s it. The entrance to Rockvalley..." Dulmar said.
Finally getting out of the tunnels, our eyes adjusted to the brightness of the surface, and we were perplexed at the beautiful sight of the capital city.
It was called Rockvalley for a reason, as the White Ring of mountains surrounded the territory. However, instead of being a typical green valley, it was all white marble rock.
Still, that wasn’t even the most impressive thing about the view.
Looking at the mountains on the opposite side from where we arrived, we spotted what looked like a massive, humanoid robot sitting in between them.
Its head was looking down, and it had one of its arms wrapped around the peak of the mountain next to it, which gave me a relative idea of how large the thing was.
"That’s what you’ve been looking for..." said Dulmar as we stared at the view.
"That’s the secret weapon?" I asked, not able to get my eyes off it.
"Indeed," Dulmar replied confidently.
’Okay, now I know why Dhormec said that I wouldn’t miss it—it is literally a massive robot the size of mountains!’ I thought.
I wanted to go see it up close as soon as possible, but Dulmar asked us not to fly above the city yet, as not everyone knew that we were visiting and could cause a commotion.
Following his instructions, he continued to guide us into the city, where our group was catching the attention of pretty much every dwarf we passed by.
"You will need to prove to the king that your knowledge can be of help. If not, he won’t allow you to study the secret weapon," Dulmar explained.
From what he told us, hundreds of researchers had visited Durinhold to study the secret weapon for the hundreds of years that it had been dormant. However, it later became clear to them that they were never going to be able to awaken it.
The one conclusion that they came to was that only the people who could read the ancient scriptures would be able to make use of the weapon.
They even tried to translate it into their own language, but it was to no avail.
At some point, the previous king to the current one made it so that any new researchers had to speak to him if they wanted to study the weapon.
’Well, I don’t really mind talking to the king about it. In fact, it sounds pretty reasonable...’ I thought.
I mean, a nation that was secluded from the outside world wouldn’t really want to have outsiders tinkering with powerful ancient secret weapons inside their territory, so it was sensible that they made us ask for permission.
When I asked Dulmar if we had to make some sort of appointment to meet with the dwarf king, he said that it had been taken care of already.
"Wait, really?" I asked.
Dulmar nodded. "I sent the castle a letter during the night and told them I was bringing you in, so the king might already be expecting you guys!"
"Hah, thanks, Dulmar. Let’s not keep him waiting any longer then..."
