Chapter 244: Elves in the Forest
After meeting the elves who were camping in the forest, I noticed that some of them were hurt with their wounds covered in cloth.
When we offered them healing potions, the group of elves relaxed, though I could tell they didn’t trust half of our party.
Darfin recognized Melina’s name since Eve, the elven princess, talked a lot about her.
Apparently, she had mentioned me in her stories, too, but the elves still didn’t believe me at first when I told them my name until Melina stepped up.
Nevertheless, after a few minutes, the commander opened up on what had been transpiring in the Lunar Forest the past few days.
"We found these destroyed areas of the forest not long ago, and we decided to hunt down the culprit..." Darfin explained.
"Yeah, we’ve seen quite a few of those scorched-down zones. What is it anyway? A dragon?" I asked.
Darfin shook his head and commented that a dragon would have wiped them out by now.
"It’s an Accursed Beast..." the elf commander replied.
Accursed Beasts were monsters that evolved using demonic energy and were on par with Legendary Beasts in terms of power.
Back when we fought the Kraken in Port Town Blue, I remembered that Vespera told me about them after we found out that Armaros was trying to evolve the Kraken into an Accursed Beast.
It was a process that required months, even years, to complete. However, it gave the monsters the title and the ability to have human forms, like Vespera.
"He said his name was Salamandra..." Darfin commented, making me gasp with surprise.
Just as the elf commander said the name of the monster, I turned to look at Yoru, whose energy seemed to increase along with his anger.
Salamandra was the name of the monster that was chasing him and his parents before they appeared in End Forest. Basically, it was his parent’s killer.
"Yoru, calm down..." I said, approaching my companion and giving him a pat on the head.
"I know you are angry, but we can’t lose control..." I continued.
My companion had all the right to be mad, but his energy was unsettling the elves, which was why I told him to control his anger.
After I explained to the elves why Yoru had reacted that way, they were surprisingly understanding of him.
"Salamandra has already taken the lives of ten of our soldiers..." Darfin said.
Realistically, the casualties that they had suffered weren’t that many. However, the elves’ population was so low that losing ten of them was problematic.
The Accursed Beast had been trying to enter the territory of Eldariel, but the barrier that protected their nation kept the monster out. Nonetheless, that didn’t deter him from destroying the area right next to their border.
Seeing that their access to the forest was getting blocked by the monster, the elves decided to face him and drove him back.
Ever since that moment, they encountered him numerous times around the forest, but they still hadn’t managed to kill him.
After we spent some time telling the elves what we had seen, they said their farewells and left the area quickly, running atop the tree branches.
"Tch, classic rude elves..." Vespera commented with a scoff.
The two battle-maids nodded in agreement with my companion, making me wonder out loud if that was a common trait for them.
"Well, they are known for being rude to everyone except other elves. Their kind has been through a lot, but it still rubs me the wrong way when they act that way to people who clearly don’t have bad intentions..." said Gina, who looked genuinely annoyed at the elves.
Carli followed up, saying that even after we gave them healing potions for their wounds, they still didn’t thank us and left.
To be fair, they had a point. Even though I really didn’t care if they thanked me or not, I could see why some people would find that annoying and rude.
However, the first elf I met in this world was Eve, and she wasn’t nearly as rude as the soldiers we talked to, so I thought there must have been some sort of misunderstanding.
When nighttime started to set, we flew back to the base but stopped mid-air when we saw an explosion not too far from our location.
It looked like a flaming sphere that appeared for two seconds, and although it was bright enough for everyone to spot it, it was then gone.
"Did everyone else see that?" I asked, wanting to make sure I wasn’t going crazy.
"That must be Salamandra..." Vespera replied.
Still suspended in the air, we thought for a few seconds about what we should do, but after Melina realized that the elves were most likely engaged in battle, she said she wanted to help them out.
I was going to help them regardless, but I was trying to think of a way to end it quickly.
"If this monster is as strong as Vespera, we could have a big problem on our hands..." I said, warning the group before we made our way to the place where the explosion occurred.
It took us a few minutes to arrive, and when I looked down, I saw Darfin and a few other elves facing a man standing in the center of a freshly burnt patch.
"Let’s try a surprise attack..." I muttered, thinking that we could take the monster out before he could even see us.
However, my plan was instantly shattered when Yoru growled and crashed down on the monster like a meteor falling from the sky.
"Yoru!" I shouted.
’Damn, he is acting on instinct...’ I thought.
Yoru’s discovery of the monster responsible for his parents’ deaths made it difficult for him to remain calm and devise a plan. Ultimately surrounding himself with moon magic and attacking on a whim.
"Let’s go!" I said to the rest of the group, who quickly followed me to the ground to support Yoru’s offensive.
When we landed, Yoru stood on the burning ground, facing a man and growling in a manner that I had never heard before.
