Chapter 230: Jobs Delegation

After spending two days at sea traveling with our group from the academy, we arrived at Port Town Blue, where we all teleported to the campus with the help of Melina and my companions.

Since we technically skipped three days of travel, the headmaster gave us that time to rest.

On the same day of our arrival, Melina and I went to Sage Devon’s office to talk about everything that had happened during the tournament.

I started by telling him about my bracelet relic and how it seemed to be a devil tracker. However, I still believed that there was something more to it.

The following part was harder to explain since I wanted to tell him about Drakzen and how he tried to interrupt the tournament by messing with Nessa’s fight.

Of course, Devon was confused as to why Drakzen would mess with a random girl, so I came clean and told him that Nessa was also a devil who wanted to live as a human.

The sage didn’t believe me at first, which was expected, making me go into more detail about her.

"I’ve already met a devil who renounced his powers and lives as a human. This girl is pretty much the same..." I explained.

After listening to my experiences with the peaceful devils, Devon closed his eyes in reflection for a moment before letting out a sigh.

"I said I would trust your judgment, and I’ll keep that promise..." he said.

He wasn’t fully convinced, but that was okay. Devon wasn’t familiar with Jackson and Nessa, so it was normal to be skeptical of them.

Then, we moved on to the topic of the royal family and Sage Lang, telling him absolutely everything that transpired during our stay.

We told Devon about Takeo’s tyrant tendencies and how they were supported by the king and queen, who seemed to look the other way at their son’s actions.

Moreover, the king had neglected the rest of his family, and my suspicions were that the queen had been manipulating him—not with magic or anything, but simple emotional manipulation.

"That king was very strange. I don’t really know what to make of him..." I said.

"His apology seemed sincere at first, but it still rubbed me the wrong way." I continued.

When it came to the queen, Ami, she was just plain evil in my eyes as she enjoyed tormenting the concubines and encouraged her son to be the way he was.

"Apart from all that, Sage Lang took us to a secret library where we read about the founder of their country..." I said, elaborating on what we saw there.

I had lost most of my trust in Sage Lang after he told the king that I was able to read the scriptures, even when I asked him to keep it between us for the time being.

That statement made Devon look really angry, which was the first time I saw him make such an expression.

The old sage thought like me, in the sense that sages shouldn’t be working as a lapdog for their king. Instead, they were meant to be advisors and ensure the peace in their nations prevailed.

For whatever reason, Lang had a strong devotion to the king, even though his heir would eventually bring their country to ruin.

"Hmmm, it seems like we should organize a Sage Assembly..." Devon said.

"What’s that?" I innocently asked.

A Sage Assembly was basically a meeting or reunion that anyone with the title of Sage could convoke.

They took place at the Mage’s Tower in Balinesia and were rare occasions where all sages in the world would meet up at one place to discuss the state of their nations.

Devon thought it was important to let them know about the devils that were still wandering the world so they could take countermeasures.

We knew that Drakzen wasn’t staying in a single territory, but we had a clue about the location of the other two—the Northern Empire and the Guanghua Kingdom.

"It will take some time for the assembly to get scheduled. You will receive a message when the date is set." Devon said.

Once we were done relaying all the information to Sage Devon, we met up with Rika and Nessa, who were waiting for us inside the academy grounds as they had nowhere to go yet.

We took them to End Town, where I gave Rika a job as my house manager.

Now, "house manager" was a made-up position. However, I actually needed someone to take care of my property since I was barely visiting lately.

While me and my companions were absent from town, Siren, the mayor’s assistant, would go to my house and pick up the payment for the potions and cosmetics that were being sold around the country.

I asked her to split it 50/50—half for me and the other half for the town’s treasury, which was used to improve the residents’ lifestyles.

Still, I knew that this was an extra responsibility on poor Siren, who was busy helping Triana with her mayor’s tasks.

With Rika being in charge of my house’s operations, the assistant could focus on her actual job.

When we arrived in town, some of the residents approached us to greet us, and I noticed Nessa and Rika were perplexed at the sight of dozens of shadow dogs walking around happily with the villagers.

To be fair, our village had grown quite a bit, with a little over 500 residents, which meant the number of shadow dogs was around the same.

After I took them to my house and explained to Rika what she would be doing at her new job, she seemed nervous and confused.

"What’s wrong?" Melina asked the woman with a gentle tone.

"C-can I really be trusted to handle that much money...?" Rika stammered nervously.

However, Melina and I simply raised one eyebrow and moved our necks laterally in unison, indicating confusion.

"It’s not like you are going to steal it. Even if you do steal money and use it to run away, that’s fine..." I replied.

In all honesty, if she stole a bunch of money, it wouldn’t be fine. Nevertheless, I trusted that Rika would have such a good time in our town that she wouldn’t feel the need to run away.

This statement made the woman teary-eyed, making me panic a little, as I would feel bad if she cried because of something I said.

Nonetheless, she admitted they were tears of joy since she was expecting we would have her do the same type of work she used to do at Kyotora.

Melina gave the woman a tight hug and affirmed that she wouldn’t have to do any jobs she didn’t like ever again.

From there, we paid Triana a visit at the town hall, where she was busy with a mountain of paperwork, reminding us of the times Jackson was the mayor.

Curiously enough, one of the first things she said when she met Nessa was that she resembled Jackson, even though they didn’t look alike at all.

Triana had the skill of the "True Color Eye," which allowed her to see a person’s true intentions.

When she first met me and Jackson, she said that the spirits were avoiding him, and we concluded that it was due to his lack of magic talent.

Of course, I would later find out that the reason why the spirits avoided him was because he was a devil.

Truth be told, I wanted Triana to look at Nessa to see if she had any ill intentions towards us, but seeing her acting normal told me everything I needed.

’I can say for sure that Nessa isn’t evil... I’m glad.’ I thought.

For the job I would give her, I thought about something more in line with her skills, so I teleported her to the tree house at End Forest, where the alchemists were working.

After introducing them to Reinar, Jen, and the rest of the group, I told her that she would be looking for materials and bringing them to the workshop.

Nessa seemed a little taken aback, so I elaborated and told her that it implied more than picking up herbs from the ground, as our alchemists used monster parts for many of the potions.

Moreover, she could go to End Town and pick up a request from the adventurer’s guild, knowing that she wanted to increase her ranks.

"Nessa, you don’t have any money or things to your name... right? If you want to live as a human, you are going to have to make a living." I said.

The secret devil agreed with me and, with a confident face, said that she would make sure to bring the best materials she could find to the alchemists.

"Alright then, we are counting on you!" Melina exclaimed, making Nessa blush a little.

’That’s funny. A devil blushing after being praised...’ I thought.

"Hey, Ichi. What are we gonna do for the next three days?" Melina asked me.

"I had something in mind... Wanna help me?" I said.

"Duh, of course!"

"You don’t even know what I was going to say!"

Melina chuckled. "I’ll still probably say yes, so let’s go!"
