Chapter 195: A Teacher’s Reputation (Part 1)
During my first class, I decided to go back to the basics of magic since I knew that people didn’t have the best methods for casting it.
After I passed attendance, I realized that the girl with blue hair who asked me my name was called "Keiko," whom I had heard about from Melina one time in one of her voice messages while I was in Kalusia.
"Keiko, come to the front," I asked the girl, who shyly walked towards me.
I placed a piece of paper on a small column and dragged my desk to the back to give her more room, asking her to cast a spell that could move the piece.
"Wind, come to me and blow away..." she muttered, generating a decent gust of wind from her hand that made the piece of paper easily fly away.
"Not bad," I praised the girl.
Her incantation wasn’t extremely long, which was more desirable than those very long prayers. Nonetheless, it was still too slow compared to casting without speaking.
Slowly but surely, I explained to the students how magic worked with imagination and that speaking their incantations was good when they were first learning, but it wasn’t as useful when they needed something more powerful.
The lecture lasted two hours, and at one point, I noticed that even Topen was silently taking notes on his desk.
The sound of a massive bell signaled the end of the lecture, and as the students walked out of the classroom, they thanked me for the lesson, which I wasn’t expecting at all.
The green-haired girl who was angry in the beginning approached me with a dejected expression, apologizing for her words and expressing she didn’t know that the lecture would be so informative.
"Don’t worry about it. I would have been a bit skeptical if I was in your place, too," I said to the girl.
Her name was Florencia, which sounded like an Italian name, and when I asked where she was from, she said she was the princess of Vista.
Getting a better look at her, she resembled Luca a lot, whom I had met very briefly when I visited the academy to pick Melina up. It turned out that she was her twin sister, which explained their resemblance.
After the classroom had been cleared of students, I had a few hours of break before the next one, so I decided to eat in the courtyard, which was quite peaceful.
Surprisingly, Topen asked to join me with an expectant expression, and I accepted since I was curious why he wanted to eat with me.
I knew that Melina would be attending my next class, so I was feeling excited to see her reaction.
’Maybe tomorrow I’ll eat lunch with her...’ I thought.
When Topen and I reached the courtyard, I pulled out a bowl with red boar meat and noticed that my assistant had a fancy-looking container filled with meat, veggies, and fruit.
Topen was a noble from the northern empire who had been living in Sephyr for fifteen years. After finishing his studies at the academy, he decided to stay there as he liked it over the north.
I was curious about the northern empire since I knew that a devil had been hiding there, even trying to gather slaves from our continent, but I didn’t want that to be the first topic that I spoke about with my assistant.
He was more curious about my magic and how I had learned such theory, apologizing and saying that he had wholly underestimated my abilities.
"It’s alright. I’m not offended or anything..." I said with a smile.
To be fair to the guy, I had pretty much taken his job, so being angry with me at first was quite natural. However, he was acting rather graceful about it now that he knew he could learn from me.
Topen asked to inspect me, and I said it was fine, although I still blocked the "child of Phelena" title since he didn’t need to know about that.
Still, seeing that I had "Sage" and "Professor" was enough to catch his attention and not even inquire about the censored title, so I told him the story of how I got those.
Again, I decided to omit certain parts that would have given Topen more questions than answers.
After having lunch with my assistant, we were walking back to the classroom when we heard students gossiping with each other, prompting me to use sound magic to hear better.
"Did you hear about the new professor?" a girl asked her friend.
"The magic theory professor? I’ve heard he was really young." her friend replied.
"I’ve heard he was hot!" another commented.
’Huh!? No, no. They are probably confused... Man, rumors truly are crazy...’ I thought, getting a little embarrassed after hearing the girls talk.
Returning to the classroom, the first person I spotted as soon as I entered was Melina, sitting in the back corner and looking out the window with a bored expression.
The students sat down and lowered their voices, but Melina still didn’t turn her head to look at me.
’She really hates these classes...’ I thought, noticing that she was so bored that she hadn’t even turned to look at me.
"Alright, then. Let’s start the lesson!" I said confidently, finally catching the attention of the princess.
Making eye contact with her, Melina widened her eyes in shock and abruptly stood up.
The classroom was silent, with only the steps of Melina approaching me echoing inside.
"Ichi, w-what are you doing here?" she whispered, not letting the other students hear her.
"Fulfilling my deal..." I replied to her, focusing my attention back on the rest of the class.
"My name is Ichiro, and I will be your magic theory professor this semester!" I said with a smile.
Melina stood shocked for a few seconds when she suddenly started laughing with tears of joy.
’Is it really that funny?’ I thought, but I still felt glad to see the princess smile so wholeheartedly.
"Alright, professor. I’m ready." Melina commented with a beautiful smile as she went back to her seat.
