My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World -
Chapter 118: A Noble’s Interrogation
Chapter 118: A Noble’s Interrogation
After the lesser demon that used to be the assistant named Copper was dealt with, I teleported back to the capital, where the commotion was still going on.
Romanov had his hands and feet tied and was placed into a moving cell that the guards would drag along the main road to show all of the citizens the true culprit behind their latest suffering.
Before they hauled Romanov away, I told the empress that Copper was dead and gave her a piece of his clothing as proof.
"That’s a shame. He seemed to know something..." the empress said.
"Are you okay, though? That looks painful." she continued, pointing at the right side of my body that was covered in blood.
"Oh, yeah, I’m fine. I already used a potion." I replied, seeing that Princess Arabella was behind her, looking worried about me.
Once Romanov’s jail cart was pulled to the prison, I asked the empress to allow me to interrogate him since I wanted to know how he managed to get the black pearl that turned Copper and the boat’s captain into lesser demons.
She agreed, but her condition was that she wanted to be present, which I saw no reason to decline as this was important for her, too.
The man was brought to an underground prison cell and kept tied up in a chair since people were scared he would turn into a lesser demon.
They had already checked his pockets and taken all of his belongings, but it was still good to take those safety measures.
For the interrogation, Vespera, the empress, and I went inside his prison after asking the guards to give us a few minutes with him.
I asked Yoru to get out of my shadow so that his presence could intimidate Romanov into telling us the truth. I wasn’t planning on doing anything crazy to him, but then again, it was better for us if he believed that.
Yoru understood his mission and stood next to Romanov while growling and showing his teeth in a threatening manner, making the man flinch and look away in fear.
On his other side, Vespera looked down at the man with a condescending look as her red eyes glowed in the dark and two of her spider legs wrapped around Romanov’s shoulder.
"Now, you are going to answer all our questions truthfully. You understand what’s going to happen if you don’t. Right?" I said, making Yoru growl, and Vespera tightened her grip with her spider legs.
"I-I understand!" Romanov stammered nervously.
We asked him how he met Copper, and he replied by saying that it had been a gift by a noble from the northern empire.
I remembered that Jackson told me that there was a devil in the north, but I wasn’t expecting it to be making moves in a whole other continent.
Apparently, the noble promised Romanov that Copper would be the best servant and right-hand man he could ever find.
When we asked him about the black pearl, he said he didn’t know what it was and that it was his first time seeing it. Honestly, it didn’t look like he was lying.
We asked him why he had chosen the northern empire and the Guanghua Kingdom to send the kidnapped victims, and he explained that he was just delivering them, but he didn’t know what the fate of those people was
The Guanghua Kingdom was a nation on the eastern continent, and seeing the connection with this whole ordeal, I concluded that the devil Jackson told me about in the east was most likely controlling that country.
Apart from those details, we asked him to tell us his plans for controlling the underground and sabotaging the empire’s efforts in the war against Kalusia.
Ever since Kalusia began their attacks, Romanov had been "donating" money for the soldiers on the frontlines, which would be used for food or medicine.
These acts of kindness and support were the catalysts that made people believe that Romanov was on their side, especially the soldiers fighting at the border.
However, his donations were an illusion to hide his real motives, which were to destabilize the capital and make the soldiers at the border retreat, allowing the Kalusia army to invade their territories and push deeper into their nation.
Romanov explained that his orders were given by a mysterious man who called himself the personal assistant of King Zagor.
’King Zagor, huh? This devil is actually calling himself the king...’ I thought, a bit annoyed since that was supposed to be my friend’s country.
He described the man as a tall redhead with golden eyes who had a murderous aura that matched that of Vespera’s. However, he said that although the man looked like a human, he definitely wasn’t one.
He mentioned that he was accompanied by a bigger, much more burly man who never even directed a word at him, so he thought that the man was his bodyguard.
The redhead man ordered Romanov to capture Jeniffer Lovegrad, who was the primary alchemist for the healing potions that were being sent to the soldiers. That way, the Kalusia army would have had an easier time fighting them.
The reason why her grandpa had also fallen victim was because he was present when the girl was being taken, so the bandits were forced into taking the old man as well.
’At least they didn’t kill him...’ I thought.
In a way, it was obvious that Romanov was put into this position by the devil. Nonetheless, he had taken it too far, and it wasn’t like he was showing remorse when committing the crimes.
He only felt terrible now that he was captured and looked pathetic, so I didn’t feel too bad about his fate.
When we thought that we had retrieved all the information we could get from him, Romanov kept speaking, probably thinking that the more he divulged, the less severe his punishment would be.
He said that Kalusia was also making a move on the nation of Aridonia, which was a country in the desert known for being hard to reach since people would have to cross the arid and dry area to get there.
A large part of Kalusia’s army had crossed the desert to reach the Droman Empire and decided to attack the desert nation at the same time.
It seemed mostly like a display of power, as in an "I can go to war with two nations at the same time. I’m so strong" kind of display.
However, that could be beneficial for us since we could make contact with the ruler of Aridonia and ally themselves against the devil’s army.
After we left the prison, Vespera seemed to be deep in her thoughts.
"A redhead man with golden eyes..." she muttered, posing her chin on her hand.
"Sounds familiar?" I asked.
"It does..." Vespera replied, but she didn’t elaborate any further as we kept walking.
When we met with Gina again, I told her about everything we had found out, and when I mentioned the redhead man with golden eyes, she stood frozen in shock.
"That’s... The phoenix guardian of Kalusia..." said Gina.
"A phoenix!?" I exclaimed, not knowing if I should be thinking about how cool it was or how scary it would be.
Gina told me that her country used to have a Legendary Beast that was known as the guardian of Kalusia, who was tasked with protecting the kingdom by the god of beasts, Garon.
In the same way that the god had given a mission to Vespera to take care of End Forest with her spiders, he had also given the phoenix a task to take care of the beastkin nation.
"There is no way he is working for Zagor... something must have happened..." Gina continued with frustration in her voice.
Now that we had a lead, we had to act fast and support the soldiers fighting at the frontlines, so I used one of my voice crystals to send a message to Reinar in End Forest.
I asked him to send as many healing potions and holy panaceas as possible. Using the delivery tablet that I had left with them, I was able to receive their packages all the way in the Droman Empire.
The empress invited me and my group to stay in her palace, and I accepted because we would have more space to store all of the resources I would be receiving.
That night, the four of us ate at the banquet hall with Empress Lysandra and Princess Arabella after she invited us.
The food, however, wasn’t anything special. It reminded me a lot of the food I would get at the castle in the Sephyr Kingdom, which wasn’t bad but felt a little bland.
During my time in Sephyr, I helped the royal chefs improve their cooking by showing them a few condiments and herbs that they had never used, and it improved their dishes a lot.
Now that I was eating something similar, I felt like I should help them out a little, so I asked the empress for permission to go to the kitchen and prepare something.
She looked confused at first, but after seeing my determination, she smiled, took a sip of her wine, and told me that I was free to do whatever I wanted.
"Alright then, I’ll be right back..." I said, leaving my seat and following the maid that led me to the kitchen.
