My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World
Chapter 114: Sleep-Deprived Flight

Chapter 114: Sleep-Deprived Flight

I kept talking to the empress about my plan to capture Romanov, and she was on board with it as she wanted to humiliate the man who brought her so much trouble in the middle of a war.

However, the empress inquired how I was planning to get to the port town quickly since not even her fastest riders would be able to make it in time.

"Same way I got here. Flying..." I replied, surprising the woman.

"I guess I didn’t even think about how you managed to get here in the first place..." said the empress as she scratched the back of her head.

After I explained to her that I could teleport to a place I had been before, I told her I would bring the prisoners back to the abandoned house we were using as a hideout.

Of course, I gave her the address so that she could send a few guards to look over the place. Gina was going to stay there anyway, so it’s not like they were defenseless.

"I see..." The empress said as she started pondering something in silence.

"Anything on your mind?" I asked, thinking that she could be having other problems that I didn’t know about.

Empress Lysandra shook her head and gazed at me again with a serious face before casting "Inspect." However, I still had everything censored, which seemed to irritate her more than surprise her.

"I get it. You want to know if I can be trusted. I mean, I did bring the scorpion pins for this exact reason..." I said.

Lysandra took a few steps back and reached under her pillow, pulling out an adamantite dagger that looked quite nice, to be honest.

"Woah, wait, calm down," I said, raising my arms to show that I truly meant no harm.

"Are you working with the devils?" she asked with a severe tone and expression, pointing the tip of the dagger at me.

"No, I actually killed one last year..." I replied.

"Is that right? Where?" she continued asking, her tone and expression unwavering.

"In the Sephyr Kingdom. His name was Armaros." I replied, keeping my composure.

I couldn’t blame the empress for not completely trusting me. Devils were cunning creatures that would lie to manipulate humans, so seeing all my censored information would have them on edge.

The empress commented that she had never heard about that demon, which made sense since Armaros kept a pretty low profile and mostly manipulated monsters, not humans.

"Look, how about I just show you my information? I’m not hiding it because I’m a devil..." I said, making the empress lower her guard as she accepted my condition.

"However, before I show you. You must promise me to keep it all a secret." I said, matching her seriousness.

"Why would I do that? What if you happen to be a devil?" she asked as she raised an eyebrow.

"If I were a devil, I wouldn’t show you anything. If you can’t promise that, then I’ll just leave." I replied, not giving her a moment to think.

Lysandra sighed with exasperation. "Fine..." she muttered as she placed her right hand on the left side of her chest.

"By my name as Lysandra Argentum, Empress of the Droman Empire and the Imperial Master Swordswoman, I hereby promise to keep your information a secret until the day death takes hold of me..." she declared.

"Heh, a pinky promise would’ve been enough. But since you are being so serious, of course, I’ll accept your promise." I replied with a little nervous chuckle.

"A pinky promise?" the empress asked.

"Nevermind. You can look at my information now." I said, dispelling my "block inspect" spell from censoring.

<Name: Ichiro

Titles: Child of Phelena, Master Alchemist, Master Craftsman, Chocolatier, Master Hunter, Professor, Sage. >

The empress widened her eyes with shock and stayed silent for a minute as she carefully read my information.

I knew that it was somewhat impressive for someone to have those titles and MP, but it was kind of embarrassing when people acted so shocked after reading it.

When Lysandra finished reading, she closed her eyes in reflection and took a deep breath.

"I see now... My little sister’s prayers must have been answered," she muttered.

"What?" I asked, genuinely confused.

"The child of Phelena came to our empire to help fight the devil. If that’s not the goddess answering our prayers, then I don’t know what it could be..." she continued.

"I... what?" I asked again.

It seemed like the empress thought that I was being sent directly by Phelena to help them, but I truly was there out of coincidence.

It all started after I saw the Droman soldiers crossing our borders asking for help. If I hadn’t seen them, there was a chance that I would have never come here in the first place.

"Ummm, just so there are no misunderstandings. I wasn’t sent here by Phelena or anyone else..." I said, explaining to her that it all started with her soldiers.

Nonetheless, she treated these coincidences as fate, saying that she knew that sending those soldiers through the Illusive Forest would prove useful to them.

I decided to let her think whatever. As long as she trusted me, then it didn’t really matter if she thought it was destiny or coincidence.

After we came to an understanding, we went through our plan for capturing Romanov again and said she would start preparations first thing in the morning.

I told her that Romanov had controlled most of the bandits with a curse, which I was able to cure with the holy panaceas.

I also mentioned the fact that the underground tunnels were under my control now, so anyone that she found walking down there was a bandit who had been freed from the curse.

Some of them still had thugs outside their homes who were ready to massacre their families if they got the signal. However, they wouldn’t be receiving any orders any time soon.

The empress said that she would deal with the remaining thugs, so I left the matter in her hands.

With our first meeting done, I left the empress’ chambers through the balcony and flew back to the abandoned house to tell the others of our plan.

I was feeling pretty tired, but if we wanted to catch up with Romanov in the other town, we would have to leave that same night.

Jen asked me if I genuinely spoke with the empress since she was the one who warned me about needing to schedule an audience with her, so I told her the entire story.

"Y-you really just arrived at the empress’ balcony in the middle of the night..." she muttered as she planted her palm on her face with a bit of frustration.

In the end, everything worked out well. In fact, I could tell that Empress Lysandra was a good person. Not because I had powers like Triana’s eyes or anything, but because I always considered myself to be a good judge of character.

Most of the prisoners we had freed were sleeping inside the abandoned house, which was actually quite comfortable on the inside, thanks to the remodeling I did with magic and the futons that Vespera made for them to rest.

I told Gina to stay with them while my companions and I went after Romanov, explaining to her that the empress’ people would arrive the next day to confirm that everyone was there.

Once Yoru jumped back into my shadow, Vespera and I left the house and took flight towards the port town.

The empress gave me a map of the empire and marked the city on it, which made our job easier since we wouldn’t have to fly around too much in search of it.

We flew the entire night, only stopping early in the morning to eat something and continue on our way.

When the smooth stone road became a dirt road, I spotted a considerable number of footprints and the trail of a carriage on the ground, which made me believe that it was Romanov’s convoy.

’Well, we are going the correct way. That’s for sure...’ I thought, accelerating a little more to reach our destination as soon as possible.

At one point, we noticed that the tracks on the ground weren’t visible anymore, making me and my companion wonder if we had passed them at some point.

Vespera concluded that they were probably camping in the forest on the roadside, which was why we couldn’t spot them. Nevertheless, this wasn’t a problem.

’If we reach the town first, maybe I can get a little nap...’ I thought.

It took us a few hours to reach the town called "Grayshore," which was the port town that was marked on the map.

The town looked somewhat depressing, even though it had a huge port with giant caravels floating around.

The rest of the residences looked slightly worn out, and the gray sand of the shore didn’t make it look any less bleak.

"Now we wait..." I said to Vespera, letting out a yawn as I slowly lay under a tree’s shade.
