Chapter 112: Infiltrating a Noble’s Mansion
Chapter 112: Infiltrating a Noble’s Mansion
After freeing the people who were being held captive under Romanov’s residence, I asked them to wait for me while I searched his house.
The old man, Lovegrad, warned me about the guards and servants that still roamed the building, but I told him not to worry about that as I made my way up the stairs.
When I got to the surface door, I pulled a lever and came out of a secret entrance inside a wine cellar.
’Huh, it led to his basement...’ I thought as I scanned the wine barrels around me.
As I left the underground room and got to the halls of the mansion, I realized there was no way I wouldn’t get lost.
It was nighttime, so the place wasn’t as busy as I thought it would be.
I saw a couple of maids walking along the corridors, but I was able to hide by floating and sticking to the ceiling nervously while praying they wouldn’t look up.
’Maybe I should develop an invisibility spell or something...’ I thought as the maids passed by.
After successfully sneaking past other maids, I saw a door that had two guards standing outside.
’If he hadn’t placed guards around that door, I would’ve never known that room was important...’ I thought, almost thanking the noble for telling me where his room was.
Using a mix of air and water magic, I began creating a thick mist to cover the hall leading to the room, promptly alerting the guards who walked inside the mist with their weapons raised.
As they blindly walked around the fog, I gently flew up to the ceiling and passed them by without them noticing, only to find the door was locked.
The guards were alerted by the sound of me trying to open the entrance, and as they started to walk back to their post, I quickly used gravity magic to move the locks inside the door to the side until they opened.
After quickly entering the room, I closed the door behind me and locked it back up.
When the guards returned, one of them tried opening the door, but when he said that it was locked, the two guards started wondering if they had imagined it.
I could still hear the guards outside talking about the mist, as one of them wondered if the fog from outside had gotten inside the mansion.
’There isn’t even any fog outside...’ I thought as I scanned the room, trying not to get distracted by the guards’ talk.
It was a simple office, with a large desk at the back and bookshelves all around.
I found a stack of letters on top of the table, but I could tell that none of those were the ones I was looking for.
When I saw the man in the underground tunnel sending a letter to their leader, they used a seal that had a scorpion symbol.
The letters on his desk seemed to have other noble family crests, so I knew those weren’t the ones I was looking for.
His desk had a locked drawer, so I used the same trick I had thought about during my moment of panic and cast gravity magic to open the lock.
Inside the drawer, I found a couple of letters with the scorpion symbols that had already been opened, talking about their plans to sell the kidnapped victims as slaves to two nations.
They were sending them to the Nothern Empire and the Guaghua Kingdom, but I couldn’t understand why those countries were buying slaves illegally from a noble in another continent.
I knew that slavery was legal in some countries, but they were mostly criminals who were sentenced to work for the rest of their lives, not innocent villagers kidnapped from another country.
Even countries like the Sephyr Kingdom didn’t have a problem with sentencing criminals to become slaves since having a few more hands to work in the mines would be more beneficial than outright killing them.
’I guess it would depend on their crimes too...’ I thought.
Slapping my face gently to snap me back to reality, I grabbed the letter and teleported back to the underground tunnel where the freed captives were still waiting for me.
Seeing me appear right in front of them startled the group, but I calmed them down by explaining that it was just a spell.
After I walked them to the area where they were keeping the alchemist Jen, the girl met with her grandfather and shared a hug.
I told them I would teleport them to a safe place, but since there were quite a few of them, I needed Vespera to help me out.
In the span of a few minutes, we teleported the freed captives to the abandoned house where Gina and Yoru were waiting.
I told everyone not to leave the abandoned house for the night, and since it was pretty much all fixed up on the inside, I didn’t feel too bad about asking them.
"What happened to the others?" Nisa, the thief girl, asked.
"The bandits that were underground are all knocked out. I also made the guy in charge send a letter telling Romanov that everything was fine." I said.
Tony, the saber master, looked impressed at my achievement and asked if I had proof of what I was saying.
"I do have proof, actually..." I said, pulling out a bag that was filled with the scorpion pins that I had taken from all of the defeated bandits.
The man stared at the bag for a moment with his eyes widened, but I still needed to do some things before the night ended.
I teleported back to the underground tunnels and went to the rooms where Vespera and I left the knocked-out bandits all tied up with her spiderweb.
Some of them had regained consciousness, but they were too scared to talk to us.
We had the bandits split into two groups: the cursed and those that weren’t.
My reasoning was simple. If they were cursed, they were forced to do criminal things.
If they didn’t have the flower tattoo, then they were trash human beings that didn’t deserve my compassion.
Pulling out a dozen holy panaceas, Vespera and I started feeding it to the bandits, explaining that it would heal their curse and releasing them of their bindings to make them understand that they could trust us.
Nonetheless, some of them were still hesitant to drink the potions since their families were threatened and were scared that the leader would find out.
Taking a piece of parchment that I stole from the bandit’s office, I wrote the addresses and names of all the family members who were being threatened by the Crimson Scorpions.
However, I couldn’t take them with me to the abandoned house simply because there were too many people already, so I told them to stay in the underground tunnels and act like nothing had happened.
When I returned to the abandoned house, I passed the parchment to Gina and Yoru and asked for their help in saving all of the family members, to which Nisa and Tony stepped up, wanting to join.
"Are you sure?" I asked, knowing that they were still afraid of the consequences that could befall them for going against the gang.
"I am. You have already proved to us that you are capable, right? Then screw it, if this is my final gamble, I’ll take it..." said Tony, clenching his fist with determination.
Nisa agreed, saying they had waited long enough to do something and they wouldn’t feel good if they did nothing now that they had the opportunity.
"Alright then, but Vespera is going to go with you. Just to make sure..." I said, telling my companion to keep them both safe.
I asked Yoru to go with Gina while I went alone, but with three different groups, we would be able to save all of the family members in no time.
It took us two hours to save everyone, although most of that time was spent on me trying to find their homes and not actually fighting the thugs. Those were easy to knock out in a second.
Once we had brought everyone to the abandoned house for protection, I asked Vespera to return to the underground tunnels and tell the freed bandits that their family members were safe and to keep acting like nothing was happening.
Meanwhile, there was one thing I needed to do, and it was eating me inside.
Ever since I got to the Droman Empire, I have heard plenty of stories about the Empress and her family. However, I still didn’t know what kind of person she truly was.
For all I knew, she could have been behind the Crimson Scopions’ crimes, although I couldn’t think of a reason that would benefit her from doing so.
’Is she even aware of the nobles from her country doing these things? Does she care?’ I pondered as more questions about the Empress plagued my mind.
"Alright, I’ve decided. I’ll go see the Empress right now..." I said to the group at the abandoned house, making everyone yell at me with surprise, asking what the hell I was saying.
