Chapter 64: 64 LIGHTS, CAMERA—
Inheritence Ability Users Jungle Obstacle Course and Combatives. Aka, J.O.C.C.’s.
(Night-Hunter: Active)
After Rex was given his mission debrief with the Chameleon IV Spec-Ops Task Force, he headed back to the barracks and laid in bed for twenty minutes. Just enough time to mentally conceptualize what was coming for the weekend.
He killed a vampire and liberated a village a day ago and was immediately thrown into global politics and human assassinations.
He wasn’t about to lie to himself and say he felt guilt at the idea of killing two corrupt economic powerhouses. But it was a change of pace.
Maybe for the better. Working with AG Brennus got him closer to the Ultra-General. The Alpha-Generals older brother and Imani’s prime suspect for Remulus in human form. Working with AG Brennus and doing so satisfactorily was even better. If that meant taking out some scumbags, he was all in.
"I just have to get through the day." Rex told himself as he stood in formation with the other Inheritence Ability users. A yawn escaped his lips uncontrollably.
Sgt Dream— who was sleeping at the head of the formation, jumped up with a snort, "Oh was I boring you?"
"Man, yea!" Rex thought as they all replied, "No, sergeant!"
He wiped his eyes for an agonizing amount of time, "Good. My ex-wife said I was boring...."
An awkward silence loomed over the training course within the colorful jungle.
"Anyway, todays training will be a small change of pace. For the last few days, I’ve had you limit test and work your speed. Simple— maybe a little boring..." Sgt Dream nodded off before waking up at the chirp of an early morning bird and continuing, "....right. Today’s training will be a bit of a mix between the two. Since we all generally understand our abilities and their limits, well now work in large scale combat and play tag."
"Not what I was expecting to hear." Rex thought to himself.
"If you couldn’t tell, today is also media.....*YAWWWWn* day... so put on a show. Make it...." Sgt Dream made jazz-hands, "...flashy. You guys are all.....hmmmm.... propoganda machines... act like it."
"Yes, Sergeant!"
Sgt Dream fell asleep for another three minutes before the sound of cars rolling through the woodland in the distance woke him up with a start, "You’re all.... dismissed. Warm-up for a few minutes. When I say a name and blow the whistle, the game begins with that person being...it."
They all fell out of formation.
Rex went as directly far from the approaching cars as possible, even sinking into the pockets of shadows beneath the trees where he could gain the whole scope of his (Night-Hunter) benefits including mana, health regeneration and increased focu—
The shadows split as waves of golden light spread across the dark, making it look like mid-day for just a moment.
Despite that time of day being against Rex’s base panther powerset, he felt better. Energized. His eyelids weren’t so heavy and his knees lost the tingly feeling that came from two days of next to no sleep.
"You looked like you needed a little boost." Victor said as he came from behind the tree Rex was standing under.
Victor’s martial-skin pulsed with golden veins as his healing waves worked their way across the field.
"What? You trying to heal us because you think we need it to face you, Vic?" Syrus asked as he crouched on a tree branch in the distance. "That’s real arrogant, man. Wish I would’ve thought of that...."
"Just warming up the genetics...." Victor bounced on the balls of his feet, reminding Rex how quick and light he moved despite his size.
"How you been?" Rex asked as they shook up and started warming up.
"Fine. My older adoptive brother entered a Drift-Dimension last night so my phones been blowing up. The usual stuff. I’m also still frustrated that they’re disciplining you so hard." Victor said.
Rex waved him off as he jumped six feet into the air to grab onto the tree branch above and hit some pull-ups. "Don’t sweat it. It’s nothing we’re not used to. Remember hell-week in primary school?"
Rex had been thinking about hell-week all morning. He was working off similar sleep schedules.
Victor laughed, "You started a shower brawl because someone took your soap and then we got smoked by the professors for three hours. Push-ups! For three hours. I’ll never thank you enough for the chest gains."
"When the people with the cameras come, just let them know I built it for you." Rex joked as he dropped from the branch after twenty pull-ups.
Victor did a salute before rolling his shoulders and shadow boxing. He didn’t bother checking the chamber of the pistols on his hip or test throwing the shield on his back. They were more expensive than Rex’s entire existence for a reason.
"Ah man, when was our last fight?" Victor asked as he got up.
"Primary-Graduation." Rex replied as he watched the others. Natasha influenced the growth of a rare flower. As it bloomed, she inhaled the glowing nectar and suddenly her eyes were hot pink and her skin was blueish. Syrus stuck to the trees where he was making mana-webbing traps. Caspien and Trish walked laps in conversation while Gregory watched from behind with his glasses hiding the watchfulness of his eyes.
The others warmed up more classically as the reporters and film crew came pushing through the green wearing jungle camo and swatting at bugs with glowing machetes.
Sgt Dream was fast asleep in a lawn chair bordering the steel course they all stood on.
"Oh yea...." Victor replied.
"You feel like cheating again?" Rex asked him.
Victor shrugged, "Can’t really cheat anymore. Everyone here has powers. And weapons. May the best man win."
The two shook up.
Immediately, the whole world went white as a thousand high quality cameras flashed to capture the moment.
The whistle blew suddenly, stunning Rex even further followed by Sgt Dreams voice, "VICTOR! YOU ARE IT!"
Victor’s grip nearly crushed Rex’s hand as he pulled him close just to slam his other hand into Rex’s solar plexus in a near rib exploding tag that sent him flying backwards into the tree they stood under.
As soon as Rex hit the tree, he exploded with Jungle-Fire, hiding his transforming body from the public to allow for a boost in his physical abilities.
Like a missile, he blasted across the field, ignoring Victor to go for an easy target.
The trainees scattered to avoid the purple blaze of fire flying across the course.
Natasha pulled the canopy in and began swinging from the vines with an obviously boosted physical form.
"The plant gases she inhaled. Must be some sort of natural steroid." Rex thought, "She’s still scared. Scattered. Being hunted by me last time might’ve given her a complex. Sorry, Tasha." Rex thought as he closed in.
With a swing of his arm, Rex threw a ball of jungle-Fire at Natasha, or more specifically, the next vine she planned to grab and swing off of.
The flames hit the vine and caused it to explode and twist with new growth until it was sprouting with flowers and wooden ventricles.
Natasha tried to grab the vine— that was turning into a sort of hybrid tree, and missed, causing her to fall.
From the ground, she looked up into the night sky, pink eyes wide and face paling as a purple ball of fire fell right for her.
Slowly, the fire faded. In her mind she saw fur and claws and those horrid purple eyes. She screamed at the pouncing beast. She screamed at Rex.
He stood over her, tired eyed and taller with more muscle than before. But still human.
He crouched down low and moved his hand to tag her saying, "You’re I—"
Before he could finish speaking, a flash of red wires fell from the canopy and wrapped around him like loose webbing before immediately tightening and binding him up.
He snarled as he was yanked up into the trees.
And then she saw it.
The eyes.
And his hands that gripped the wires with sharp black claws.
"SYRUS YOU FUCK!—" Rex roared before hitting the underside of a tree branch with enough force to break his nose and split an eyebrow.
[89% HP Remaining!]
Red dyed his vision.
He could hear Syrus crawling like a spider on the top-side of the branch, "What?! Only you get to randomly attack me when you have epiphanies!!?? HAHA— it’s media day! We have to give the reporters a show. So we can draft more little soldiers! How many kids do you think want to be like me now that I’ve caught the mysterious bad-boy?"
"None. You’re too weird." Rex said before spitting a jungle-Fire bullet through the branch he was tied to.
"AHT!" Syrus flipped out of the way but the focused beam of flame was already twisting and expanding the growth of the trees.
"Not smart!" Rex snarled as the hole in the branch closed and the whole tree thickened, causing the mana-webbing to tighten around his back and arms.
Quickly, he activated his (Mass-Morphing) skill and increased the size of his muscles until he was popping out of the binds thanks to his defensive martial-skin hide.
As he fell free, he blasted off with four streams of jungle-fire from his hands and feet and redirected himself back into the underside of the branch.
It cracked on impact and sent Syrus into the air.
With Rex’s claws, he gripped the bark and swung himself up onto the branch where he unleashed a volley of jungle-fire into the airborn trainee.
Syrus laughed as he used his mana-webbing to swing and flip around the fast-growing canopy, "Someone’s grumpy! Didn’t sleep well? Must’ve been too busy with Ms. Price!"
"It’s too early for your shit today, Syrus." Rex said as he kept his freehand hidden behind his back where he was charging up a wide spread blast of heat.
Syrus laughed. "You really don’t know me, so you?" All the while he kept swinging, his glowing webbing was wrapped and tangled around the entire canopy in strange geometric shapes and knots.
"Not at all." Rex said. He went to try and move his arm and realized a stray strand of webbing had wrapped it’s way around his wrist. "Oh, c’mon...."
"Can’t win if you don’t do your research." Syrus yanked his string of webbing and cut the entire canopy as all the tied up and knotted portions sharpened like blades.
Rex fell, surrounded by a mass of branches, barbs, plants and everything inbetween.
The trainees below were none the wiser until it all fell with Syrus jokingly yelling,
"TIMBERRRRR!!!!"
