Chapter 61: 61 DEAD MYTH

For the first time since their arrival, the layered worlds were silent. No earth quakes. No dragonoid war parties dotting the skies. No egg spitting volcanoes.

Just Rex and his people.

And a mile long cut through the stone city bulk that burned white hot.

Rex took a knee.

"THAT. WAS. MIRACULOUS!!!!" The half-goblin yelled as she hopped out of the building. "BUT MY BABIES!!...." She slapped her hands against her face as she eyeballed the piles of ashen bones.

"You’re worried about bones? Like there isn’t a thousand more in here?" Rex thought as he tried to catch his breath.

"If it makes you feel any better, you can use the ashen bones as bone meal for your plants." Imani said as she stepped out behind her and rushed over to Rex.

"How did you know I tend to plants?" The half-goblin asked as she blushed.

"Your fingers are covered in dirt and plant oils. Some extremely rare. Which speaks to a sort of heightened interest." Imani said as she crouched beside Rex, "Are you alright?"

Rex shuddered. His glass form cracked and fell as broken glass that faded as sand, revealing his human form beneath. "Yea.... I’m—"

Rex vomited.

Imani looked away but raised her hand to pat his back before hesitating and moving her hand. Only for Nietha to grab her hand and put it on Rex’s back as she walked past to join her sisters.

"I’m good." Rex nodded as he wiped his mouth and stood up, "That was good."

"Throwing up or decimating a Drift Destroyer?" Imani asked.

"Both." Rex said before transforming into his base Werepanther form and approaching the Drift Destroyer’s corpse. It was split in three steaming halves from Rex’s reflected claw strike.

They all followed him until they surrounded the corpse.

Imani scanned the corpse with her glowing blue eyes. "This creatures genetic makeup is incredible. My database is one of the best in the world and there’s chemical compounds flowing in its blood that I don’t have a name for."

"You think they’re strong?" Rex asked as he licked his chops.

"Obviously." Imani replied.

"What about consumable?" Rex added.

Imani looked up at him. Then she sighed as if she understood what was about to happen, "I suppose your appetite would be increased after such a battle. The combination of sweat loss combined with calorie burn probably put you in a serious deficit, but this creature is such an unknown id reccomend—"

*CHOMP*

Rex and Imani looked to their left and found the half goblin woman had bitten a chunk of its toe off.

She chewed for an incredibly long amount of time before swallowing and burping black smoke, "....spicy. Disgusting. It needs to sit longer."

Rex turned back to Imani as Hassan laughed with his Bastetians, "Aye, if she dies while I’m eating, stop me."

"What— you’re going to—"

Rex had already dove in with one thought in mind and one skill active, (Barbed Tongue).

"I need strength. I need it all."

For the next hour, he ate. He ate like he’d always wanted to. To his hearts content. He ate until he wasn’t hungry. He ate until it went from disgusting to downright uneatable. And then, he transformed into his Anhurian form to enlarge his stomach and continue the wild consumption.

The others watched in awe as he ate the entirety of a twelve foot plus sized Drift Destroyer in the span of an hour.

"Is this not an eating disorder..?" The half-goblin asked Imani.

"No. Not for him." Imani replied, "Lions are known to eat up to one hundred pounds/eighty-eight kilos of meat in a single sitting. Rex is the size and weight of two lions and just ran ten plus miles and fought a fire elemental gorilla with a rhino horn. If anything, he’s on a sudden diet."

All that was left was bones.

Black charred bones.

Rex stood up as he licked the last femur bone clean, looking drunk and..... slightly pregnant.

He burped a torrent of fire that had everyone stepped backward as he snarled.

"Hahahell yea!....dont let me throw up."

Ding!

[Barbed Skill Unlocked: (Rampage-Wave LVB), (Primal-Eyebeam LVB), (Mass-Morphing LVB)]

[Rampage-Wave: With this barbed-skill, the user is able to intrinsically link his emotional state to his elemental output passively due to new mana bonding to the emotion based portions of the brain. At next to no cost, upon casting, you can emit pulse waves of your element and temperature. The angrier you grow, the more powerful each pulse wave becomes. The only drawback is you’ll begin to damage yourself.]

[Primal-Eyebeam: This barbed-skill is a rare cyclopsian trait mutated by the Drift Destroyer’s (Primal Flame-Chimera) genetic makeup. Usually, the (Eyebeam) ability is a natural trait given to the Cyclops that allows them to focus raw mana in their single eye and send devestating blasts wherever they look. The (Primal) mutation allows this ability to also work as a means of Beast-Taming through the magical aspect of Dominane Imposing. To Tame or Destroy is the nature of this skill.]

[Mass-Morphing: Is a simple muscle manipulation skill that’s cost is determined by calories and mana and will apply the [Starved] status effect if used too often without eating. When used in tandem with (Primal-Eyebeam), Taming chances are increased.]

Rex looked up from his system screen, "I no longer understand my kit."

"Rex." Imani said.

"What?" Rex was pulled from his own thoughts.

"I think we should have that talk now. This is a better place than any. Not much chance of recon units intercepting us here." Imani explained.

"Sure." Rex walked over.

They all stood in a loose circle with the half-goblin hanging behind Imani, eyeballing something behind Rex frequently.

Imani facilitated the conversation, "I will speak on my own behalf and start by saying, due to your help in defeating the Drift Destroyer, I forgive your attempted kidnapping. Since it was also a gross misunderstanding."

She nodded, "Thank you... and sorry."

"Now, what I said before remains. We’re allies. We share a common enemy."

She nodded.

"Remulus is coming. With others. And we’d all have a better chance of surviving if we joined forces." Imani said.

The half-goblin shook her head, "We.... This." She referred to everyone in the circle, "It’s not enough."

"You doubt the Awakener?" Auset hissed beside Neitha.

"No. I know my enemy."

Imani looked to Rex.

Rex spoke up finally, "What if it wasn’t just us?"

"Then.... yes."

"Then join." Rex replied. He couldn’t help but notice how Imani looked at him then. "I won’t stop to differentiate enemy from anyone else when the time comes. And you and your bones won’t survive. Not without us."

"I’ve managed this far."

"Yea. You’ve managed. In the dirt. You aren’t living. You have to steal just to learn how to communicate. You can’t do anything other than what rats do. Do you want that?..." Rex turned around and approached the bones of the beast. He snarled and picked up a steaming black femur bone and dragged it to drop at her feet. "....Or do you want to fight? Fight for your plants. Fight for your bones. Fight for it all."

Her eyes went wide at the sight of the bone. She was even drooling.

"What’s your name?" Hassan asked, "Don’t tell me you need yours beaten back into memory as well—"

"It can be arranged." Rex said quickly.

"Nechra." She said, "My name is Nechra."

"So, yes or no, Nechra. Do you want to get rid of the dogshifters or not?" Rex said.

"....I do."

"Then you’re with us."

She nodded.

"Bones are all yours."

She jumped at the femur bone"HAHA!—"

"Oh one other thing..." Rex said as she ran past him.

Quickly, Nechra stopped and turned around to Rex looking completely unrecognizable.

He was in his werelion form— which was already unfamiliar and terrifying to Nechra. Only now he stacked on an extra seventy pounds of muscle, making him even larger and more monstrous. Venomous saliva dripped from his sabered fangs. His mane was a spiked mess of glass spikes that steamed under the glow of distant flames. His left eye shined with a beastial intensity that locked her in place as he towered over her, snorting smoke like a dragon.

He growled.

"If you steal from me again, I’ll lick every inch of you off your bones and take your necromancy power for myself."

"....y-you can do that?" She questioned before abruptly realizing how the beaming light from his eye was a lot like the Drift Destroyer’s own.

Immediately, she dropped to her knees and clasped her hands together, "I swear— I’ll never take what’s yours or anyone among the gold-cats ever again!"

Suddenly the air didn’t feel so heavy. And the menacing glare of his eye was gone. Hesitantly, she looked up.

"Just kidding. Im not even like that. I just wanted to test my new skills. And I had to get you for that little kidnap thing." Rex said, in human form once again.

"I was just kidding too." Nechra stood up and dusted off her knees.

"Bit— what?" Rex said in surprise.

"I lied— actually. I’ll steal from you....ill take your life... oh! But only if I find out you’ve joined the dogshifters. He can be persuasive. I’ve seen it." Nechra said casually.

"Oh. So you’ll keep me in line?" Rex asked.

Nechra giggled, which wasn’t at all the appropriate reaction— which kind of made her scary in a sense as she replied, "Yea!"

Rex grinned. She was strong. She could stand against the intimidating power of his (Primal-Eyebeam) buffed by (Mass-Morphing). But more importantly, she was different from the others.

Rex’s mind worked as he watched her, "Everyone I’ve been meeting.... And summoning, has treated my like a god. Not good for my ego. But this one. She can keep me in check. For now at least, if I ever fly off the handle. Still though, I have to be careful. She just showed me that she has no issue lying. I don’t like that."

"What?" She asked as he stared.

"I like you..... I think."

"Same..... I also think." Nechra said.

Rex turned to everyone else, "Let’s get out of here."

They nodded.

"Hassan, you and the Bastetians, take some of the volcanic dino corpses." Rex said.

"The Destroyer wasn’t enough?" Imani asked.

"Not even slightly." Rex said as he kicked through the rubble and found a circular stone.

It was an egg. It didn’t crack due to falling into the soft fleshy carcass of another dino kobold.

Rex picked up the egg and found everyone staring at him.

"What?! We’re up against a god, I need to try everything once."

"This isn’t at all about you wanting a dragon?" Imani asked.

"Shut-up."
