Chapter 57 VULCANIC DRIFT
Chapter 57: 57 VULCANIC DRIFT
Rex fell into the volcanic world at blurring speeds. The heavier gravitational pull had him rocketing into the fuming hot shadows. With his feline senses strained to the maximum, he spun out of the way of jagged fiery spikes. At other times, he let his claws rip apart the volcanic stone to slow his descent until suddenly there was nothing to grab at all.
He blasted through another layer of ashen clouds with fiery arcs of thunder rumbling within.
Almost immediately, Rex realized he was falling from a new sky.
The world below was something akin to a military district-city melded with the aesthetic of a volcanic fire-world.
Jagged black stone skyscrapers and castles stood tall, waving flags and insignias in languages so far from human it was jarring.
Rivers of red and green lava flows cut up the hard stone land and created regions where the architecture and aesthetic held the subtlest of differences.
Rex would’ve studied it longer if he could, but more volcanic Kobold operatives were flying towards the skies, seemingly heading towards the new threat to their home.
Which was Rex.
A unit of winged kobolds eyeballed him from afar and broke off from the dragonoid flock. Their volcanic-jet propulsed feet exploded with fire and smoke as they sped after him. Trails of ash cut black across the sky. Their stone wings were sharp as blades, cutting them in new directions as they spun after him.
"Oh I wish I had a gun!" Rex snarled as he fell from the second sky.
Unfortunately, all he had was solar-sand. It was better than nothing. Immediately, he called to the hot sands in his fur and very being. The granules were weak. They didn’t have the same sunny glow. They weren’t charged with solar rays since he’d assumed his Anhurian form during nightfall.
As a result, they also moved slower in response to his will and imagination.
He held up his arm, trying to mold the sanded form a spear into it.
Coils and flows of sand unraveled from his golden fur, focusing on his palms. Lengthening. Thousands of dull grains fell and blew away in the intense winds.
"Worst time to have performance issues...." Rex snarled.
The kobolds were less than two hundred feet away. They looked horrendous. They didn’t have the average or baseline Kobold appearance. Their scales were misshapen and made into armor in places. Some of them had green lava saliva that was so hot it distorted the air around their faces, making them look like gaseous dinosaur monsters.
The closest kobold raised their arm. Stone scales shifted down the limb, forming a barrel of concentrated fiery energy.
A volcanic blast cannon transformation.
The kobold fired a projectile of lava and stone.
Rex reacted quickly, knowing he couldn’t manage the fine detail of a spear and settled with a body length shield. It had no detail or martial function beyond being a reinforced block of shifting sand.
It happened so fast he almost didn’t catch it.
Immediately after he summoned his shield, it turned to glass. The mere presence of the kobolds was so hot that it transformed the state of his sand. Which was saying something since his sand was meant to absorb sunlit energy.
When the leading kobold in volcanic scale armor collided with his shield, it shattered.
He was knocked off course as he fell with glass shards getting into his eye and ear and the rest tearing up his chest and arms.
[65% HP Remaining!]
Rex was stunned. His half focused vision blurred and his sharded ear stung like hell. Even so, he recovered, flipping upright in the air just in time to see another kobold charging while the rest hung back and fired lava projectiles.
The Kobold lunged at him with an arm made into a black stone-scale lance. Rex flipped to the side and caught the weaponized arm. As he did, he turned the kobold around, hiding behind its wings as the lava projectiles streamed across the sky.
He could feel them smashing into his living shield by the burning heat of the kobolds body.
It was from that position that he noticed a sparkle on his fur.
The fine golden hairs were turning crystalline. Like flecks of Diamond.
Out of nowhere a solar sand lasso wrapped around his waist and pulled him upright. Just as the kobold was reduced to ash.
"This is madness!" Hassan explained as he caught Rex and they began flying on a focused wave of sand with the others.
"This is the world now." Rex said.
Glowing gold spirals of sandy air connected to his wounds as the Bastetians healed him.
"And Imani is in here." Hassan replied.
The world was massive, unknown and full of murderous monsters.
"Yea."
"Do you still have her scent?" Hassan asked as he called forth a massive wall of sand, casually hiding them from view of the thousands of volcanic Kobolds so they could sink into the black stone city and hide safely.
"No." Rex said before catching a spark of blue in the distance beneath Hassan’s wall of sand.
"What was that?" Neitha asked.
It came again further away.
Rex’s eyes widened, "That’s a vision pulse. Imani’s over there!"
Hassan lowered them to the ground. As he hit the ground, he dropped to a knee, sending his sand into the cracks of the hot stone earth.
"What are you doing?" Rex asked.
"Mapping the world." Hassan said with closed eyes.
"How long will this take?"
"Not long. Give chase with the Bastetians. I will join you."
Rex didn’t need to be told twice. He took off with the female shifters flanking him through the sweltering alleyways and across empty streets.
As he ran, following the vision pulse breadcrumbs he was continually drawn back to his hands where the fur was slowly turning into some sort of glass.
He was taken from his personal considerations when a Kobold from the sky flew low, divebombing them in the alleys.
Rex moved on instinct and flipped over the Kobold. As he did, he slashed at its exposed neck.
[+200 EXP]
He landed. The kobold fell as a corpse behind him thanks to the Bastetians stomping it out.
But Rex wasn’t focused on that.
He was focused on his now larger and sharper claws seemingly made of glass.
"What the hell is happening to me?"
