Chapter 49: Chapter 49: It seems I was overthinking my own importance.
The VIP ward floor was unusually quiet. Fu Jinghen stood at the door, his hand just touching the doorknob when he heard laughter coming from inside. He looked up, slowly releasing his grasp.
Inside the ward, Wen Qiao was wearing a pink tracksuit, still sporting her signature pigtails, waving her arms as she shared some amusing stories with Jiang Lai. She even stood up from her chair when she got to the exciting parts, keeping Jiang Lai’s smile ever-present.
Fu Jinghen just stood there quietly, watching the warm scene of mother and daughter interacting, his body and mind unconsciously relaxing.
After who knows how long, Jiang Lai began to feel tired and closed her eyes to sleep. Wen Qiao tucked her in, adjusted the air conditioning temperature, and then tiptoed out.
She turned around and was startled to see Fu Jinghen standing at the door, "Fuck, what are you doing here?"
Fu Jinghen, slightly displeased by those words, furrowed his brow but didn’t say anything, merely asking, "Did I scare you?"
"Isn’t that obvious?" Wen Qiao patted her chest and glared at him with a complaining look, then repeated, "What are you doing here?"
"...."
For a moment Fu Jinghen wasn’t sure how to respond, but after a pause he still chose the truth, "Wen Shu had a car accident. I came to help."
"Oh," Wen Qiao nodded, it made sense why she saw so many reporters at the hospital entrance when she arrived; Wen Shu was also in this hospital, "How is she doing now?"
While reading the book, Wen Qiao didn’t feel extremely fond of Wen Shu, nor did she dislike her. Now that she was a character in the story, she naturally wanted to know the protagonist’s situation.
"She’s alright now."
"So..." Wen Qiao drew out the word, batting her big eyes at Fu Jinghen, "You just stopped by to check on my mom along the way?"
"...."
"Fine." Wen Qiao hung her head, her tone sinking with it, "I thought you came here especially for me. Now it seems I was just flattering myself."
"..."
The young girl’s words couldn’t hide her disappointment, as if "I’m so aggrieved" was written in big letters on her round head. She didn’t make a scene, but every word seemed to indict him.
The performance was thick on the girl before him, and it seemed she hadn’t planned to hide it at all.
Fu Jinghen looked down at her, "Go on."
"..."
Go on?
Go on with what?
Keep performing for you?
I should charge for this, you know.
"It’s okay, I don’t mind. I know you liked Wen Shu first, and were forced to get engaged to me. It’s only right that you went to sort things out when she was in trouble."
"..."
"It really is okay. I just feel a bit pitiful. I slaved over cooking a meal, even scalded my hand, and then my husband runs off to fuss over another woman. I don’t feel slighted at all."
"After all, you liked her first. I’m just an interloper, with no right to compete for anything. Yet, deep down, I still hope you might share a little of the attention you give other women with me. Let that bring a bit of warmth to my lonely, cold heart."
The more Wen Qiao spoke, the lower her head drooped, until at the end she seemed to want to curl up into a ball.
Fu Jinghen saw her performance getting more exaggerated and felt that if he didn’t speak up to stop her, she might never stop.
"That’s enough."
Wen Qiao raised her head, grinding her teeth, "Fu Jinghen!"
Fu Jinghen, running out of patience yet accommodating her for once, asked, "So what do you want to do?"
"Hug me."
