Chapter 44: Chapter 44: The Fox Borrows the Tiger’s Ferocity
Wen Qiao saw Tang Ru close her mouth, set down the hat and mask she was holding on the bedside table, and pulled up a chair to sit beside the hospital bed, looking at her coldly, "My mom needs to rest quietly; are you leaving on your own or should I have someone escort you out?"
"Is that how you speak to your elders?"
"Elders? If there are no mirrors in your house, can’t you at least take a look at yourself in a puddle? Get some self-awareness." Wen Qiao snorted disdainfully, "If you insist on considering yourself my elder, that’s fine. Go ask Fu Jinghen if he wants a mistress as a mother-in-law. If he doesn’t mind, neither do I."
Tang Ru abruptly stood up from her chair, pointing at her, "You..."
Seeing her hands trembling with anger, Wen Qiao looked away, took Jiang Lai’s hand, and said calmly, "Aren’t you leaving? Don’t wait for me to call someone; it would be embarrassing. You said it yourself, my status is different now. I’d kindly advise you not to clash with me."
"Besides, I remember Wen Feng distinctly told you not to bother my mom. If you’ve forgotten, I don’t mind reminding you."
Tang Ru, also caring about her face and adding that Wen Feng did indeed warn her not to go looking for Jiang Lai, came many times because Jiang Lai, too proud to explain the situation to Wen Feng, didn’t let him know.
Seeing she couldn’t get anything out of Wen Qiao, Tang Ru angrily dropped her hand, picked up her purse, and stomped out in her high heels, making a thunderous noise as she left.
It seemed that borrowing the tiger’s fierceness was pretty effective.
The hospital room returned to silence. Just as Wen Qiao was about to say something, she felt her hand empty. She looked down to find Jiang Lai had withdrawn her hand and was looking at her with a level gaze, "Is everything Tang Ru said true?"
That look, that tone, was just like when her mother scolded her for misbehaving as a child.
Wen Qiao’s lips quivered and, with a burst, her tears immediately began to flow.
Jiang Lai was startled by her sudden crying, got up halfway from the bed, and frantically started to wipe her tears, "I haven’t even had the chance to scold you and you’re already crying."
Wen Qiao suddenly threw herself into Jiang Lai’s arms, sobbing breathlessly, "Mom, I’ve missed you so much."
Those words were utterly sincere.
Wen Qiao had a tendency to avoid things, deliberately not seeing or listening so she could pretend nothing had happened. But at that moment, seeing Jiang Lai, the long-suppressed longing in her heart burst forth like a flood.
The warmth from her embrace and the wetness on her shoulders momentarily stunned Jiang Lai.
Perhaps because of her strained relationship with Wen Feng, after their divorce, Wen Qiao became silent and withdrawn, no longer the lively and lovely girl she used to be.
Though Wen Qiao occasionally visited her, Jiang Lai always felt it was more perfunctory than genuine.
Jiang Lai felt sad but also knew that Wen Qiao had become this way partly because of her and Wen Feng.
Now being held like this, listening to her cooing about missing her, Jiang Lai felt more bewildered than overjoyed.
Wen Qiao, feeling Jiang Lai’s stiffness, began crying even harder, "Mom, don’t you miss me? Why don’t you hug me?"
Upon hearing this, Jiang Lai immediately raised her hand to pat her back, and what was initially a scolding turned into gentle comfort, "How could I not? I miss you every day."
Her warm palm continuously patted Wen Qiao’s back, soothing her emotions.
After a long while, she finally calmed down, lifted her head from Jiang Lai’s embrace, and wiped her tears, looking utterly wronged.
Jiang Lai couldn’t help but laugh and cry at the same time, "Just now you were so imposing, how did you turn into a crybaby so quickly?"
"I just missed you," Wen Qiao said, a bit embarrassed, squirming a little.
