Dependence And Atonement
Well, I’ve refreshed myself in the nice bath, but I have no way to get back. Hmm, if only I had a bike here, I could’ve enjoyed a pleasant ride.
"That felt great. But how are we getting back? Should we run?"
Oh, has Serai-san cheered up after the nice bath? She’s whimsical, but her fundamentally positive mindset is one of her good points.
"We could run back, but sweating again after the bath feels a bit off. I have an idea, so let’s head to the road first."
"Really? I don’t mind running back, though."
Yeah, as superhumans, we could run at speeds not far off from a car.
Honestly, we could even hit 100 km/h on our own feet. But it feels like a waste to sweat again after soaking in the hot springs. So, let’s use some wisdom and ingenuity here.
After leaving the park and reaching the road, I activated the skills [Salt] and [Crafting].
"Here we go, a new stage! A challenge to create complex mechanisms from a single material!"And so, through the skill [Salt], several parts were created.
Tires made of rock salt, boards, handles—these things were generated one after another. Well, I could’ve made them myself, but the skill [Crafting] helps refine them nicely. I also wanted to ensure the parts were securely combined.
"Wait, what’s this? Ah…! Is this a kickboard!?"
"Yep, those are the parts. There’s enough for two, so let’s assemble them together."
"Got it! This’ll make going downhill way easier!"
"Exactly."
And so, we assembled the rock salt kickboards.
To ensure strength, the tires were wide and the axles quite thick. But otherwise, they were pretty much like regular kickboards. Though, if we were aiming for performance, I’d want to add ball bearings to the axles.
But since they only needed to last for about an hour, I just injected some [Slime] to lubricate the bearings. Making something as complex as a bicycle would’ve been tough, but a kickboard was no big deal.
"Alright, one’s done. How does it feel?"
"Feels good. But as usual, you’re sneaky, Coach!"
"Not at all. I never imagined the [Salt] skill could be this useful at first."
"Lucky you. I wish a salt grandpa would visit my dreams too."
Ah, well, he did have an old-man vibe, but he was a god, you know? Though, Serai-san saying this is because I told her how I acquired the [Salt] skill in a bedtime story.
"Hmm, if you improve your channeling ability through meditation, maybe there’s a chance?"
"Got it, I’ll work on my meditation then. Let’s go!"
"Wait, mine isn’t done yet!"
"Fufu, I’m going ahead~!"
With a mischievous laugh, Serai-san skillfully rode the rock salt kickboard down the slope. She’s so spoiled~.
.....
"Coach, next, help me fix the chicken coop."
"Sure, Grandpa. I’ll be right there."
The next day, I was being bossed around by Serai-san’s grandpa.
The way he uses people so easily makes me feel the Serai family bloodline. But well, this is a good trend.
After all, there was quite a distance between me and the grandpa until yesterday.
Last night, after riding the rock salt kickboard back, I had a fun time playing around with Serai-san.
But it seems the grandpa wasn’t too pleased, as he ended up in a bad mood. Well, from his perspective, seeing his precious granddaughter getting along with a man he barely knows probably wasn’t enjoyable.
However, our incredibly perceptive Nina-san quickly picked up on the grandpa’s feelings.
During dinner, she casually explained to the grandpa that I was her boyfriend, and Serai-san was just playing around with me because she trusted Nina-san as her best friend.
There were moments of doubt, but she cleverly added, "Grandpa, you see, Machi calls him ‘Coach,’ using his first name, while I call him ‘Coach’ too. Even if it seems the same, that’s a huge difference."
Hearing this, the grandpa smiled and nodded in understanding.
And in that moment, a new persona was born for me: Nina-san’s boyfriend, Coach.
"Coach, there’s a leak in the barn. Can you climb up and check it out?"
"Sure, I’ll fix it if I can."
And so, the grandpa, now completely at ease with me, took full advantage of having an extra pair of hands around.
But that’s fine.
If I took it negatively, I’d think, "He’s just using me!" But if I take it positively, it’s, "He really relies on me."
When I gauge someone’s happiness, I consider how many people they have who let them depend on them. That difference greatly influences their happiness.
In other words, Serai-san’s grandpa is now fully depending on me.
But he’s also the one who’s stayed alone at home, protecting the fields, rice paddies, and livestock.
So, while I’m here, I should let him depend on me as much as he wants. Personally, I think the grandpa deserves it. If what I do can contribute even a little to Serai-san’s filial piety, I’d be happy.
This is my small atonement for being in a romantic relationship with his granddaughter, something I can’t exactly explain to him.
