Thus, we won’t need Lu Biaotou and his escort any longer. You go and make arrangements for Lu Biaotou, and let them return home.”
“This…” Ye Wenzheng was somewhat troubled, “What about the horses on our side? And what about the silver for Lu Biaotou and his men?”
Originally, it was agreed that escorting them to and from the capital city would cost a total of two thousand taels of silver, half of which had already been paid. But now, they were asked to return halfway through the job. Furthermore, what was once a group of twenty was reduced to only six due to Dongzi’s betrayal, leaving Ye Wenzheng uncertain about how to settle the silver.
Additionally, on their arrival, Lu Biaotou provided only three horse-drawn carriages, while the rest were self-arranged. Now that Lu Biaotou and his men were to return, managing with six men and three horses was feasible, but the horses that belonged to their own group couldn’t possibly all be ridden by just Ye Jiu and himself.
Soon enough, Ye Jiu understood what Ye Wenzheng was struggling with.
After a moment’s thought, Ye Jiu arranged, “Although Lu Biaotou’s handling of Dongzi’s matter was inappropriate, our journey benefitted from their presence, avoiding many unnecessary troubles.
Besides, we’ve made quite a bit of money, and although they haven’t seen it, they probably have an estimate in their minds. We might need these people in the future, and it’s important not to be too ruthless in business. Leaving a way out for others also means leaving one for oneself.
Give them the promised silver. As for the horses, we’ll keep just one. You and I can ride together later. The rest can be ridden back by Lu Biaotou’s men, and we’ll have them looked after at home for the time being.”
“Ok, I’ll go and make the arrangements now,” Ye Wenzheng said as he headed for the door.
As he reached the doorway, Ye Jiu suddenly called out to him, “Wenzheng, wait a moment.”
“Does my cousin have something else for me?” Ye Wenzheng turned back and asked.
“I want to send a letter to the family. Wait for me to write it before looking for Lu Biaotou and his men. And ask them to help bring the letter back,” Ye Jiu said.
Being away from home for a long time made one homesick, but Ye Jiu knew in her heart that she couldn’t always stay home without doing anything. Her departures like this would only become more frequent in the future, and brief separations were inevitable.
“Alright, it happens that I’ve also prepared some gifts for my mother and Xiaoyun. I’d like them to take those back as well,” Ye Wenzheng said, his smile growing more heartfelt as he mentioned his mother and sister.
The things Ye Wenzheng had prepared were not extravagant, just a few delicate trinkets he had seen along the way, inexpensive but exquisite.
Thinking back, his sister had never owned anything for herself since she was born, and he had wanted to purchase these to have them ready for her.
He also wanted to send some silver back with them for his mother to use around the house.
Although Ye Wenzheng earned only ten taels of silver as his monthly wage, Ye Jiu would give him some reward money each time they went out to sell goods. In just over half a month, he accumulated over a thousand taels of silver, an amount he’d never even dared dream of before.
As for the silver pilfered from Dongzi and his men, even though Ye Jiu didn’t want it, Ye Wenzheng didn’t pocket it for himself; instead, it was used for expenses along the way.
Ye Wenzheng knew well that money was a good thing, but one couldn’t be too greedy. Being able to handle affairs by his cousin’s side already made him luckier than others. Being overly greedy would only lead to his downfall.
In the end, he would end up just like Dongzi and his gang.
