Chapter 62: She was afraid it was him
Chapter 62: She was afraid it was him
Her entire body froze as a jolt of recognition shot through her.
She knew this person.
Her breath hitched, her fingers curling into fists at her sides. But the face remained elusive, partly obscured by the surrounding crowd of doctors.
"Who...?" she murmured, her voice trembling.
She stepped closer, her feet moving of their own accord. Her heart pounded louder with every step as she strained to catch another glimpse of the patient’s face.
And then—
"Dr. Zhang, we need more suction!" one of the nurses yelled, snapping Hua Jing out of her trance.
Her gaze darted back to the scene, her unease deepening as the chaos unfolded before her.
Suddenly, another sound reached her ears—rushed footsteps echoing down the hallway.
Hua Jing instinctively turned toward the source, her breath catching in her throat as a familiar figure came into view.
Wei Ling.
He was running, his expression one of sheer panic as he approached the room.
Hua Jing’s body went rigid, her mind racing.
"What’s Wei Ling doing here?" she whispered to herself, her voice barely audible.
Her gaze flickered back to the patient, then to Wei Ling, the pieces refusing to come together in her mind.
What was going on?
Hua Jing’s breath hitched as her gaze darted between Wei Ling and the figure on the hospital bed. Her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, her chest tightening with a sense of foreboding she couldn’t explain.
Wei Ling... here?
Her confusion deepened. She had no prior connection to Wei Ling in her original world. In the other world, he was fiercely loyal to Zhao Yan, never leaving the prince’s side. But this world was different—wasn’t it?
Her eyes flitted back to the chaotic scene in the hospital room. Doctors and nurses moved frantically, their figures partially obscuring the patient on the bed. Her heart clenched painfully, her instincts screaming at her to make sense of the situation.
Who was this man lying there, fighting for his life?
She strained to see more, but the nurses crowded around the bed, their voices overlapping as they worked to stabilize the patient. A nurse held an oxygen mask tightly over the man’s face, concealing his features further. Hua Jing couldn’t shake the nagging feeling in her chest—a feeling that the man on the bed was someone important.
Her thoughts froze when Wei Ling stormed into the room, his voice booming with urgency.
"What the hell happened?!" Wei Ling’s tone was a mixture of panic and fury. His usual calm, composed demeanor was completely gone.
A nurse immediately intercepted him, placing a firm hand on his arm to prevent him from getting any closer to the bed.
"Sir, please step outside for a minute," the nurse said, her voice brisk but polite. "We are doing everything we can to stabilize the patient."
Wei Ling’s fists clenched, his expression pained. "What happened to him?" he demanded, his voice cracking slightly. "He was fine just a little while ago!"
Hua Jing’s heart clenched as she observed him from the doorway. The raw emotion on Wei Ling’s face was something she hadn’t expected. His concern was palpable, almost suffocating.
The nurse’s tone softened slightly as she glanced at Wei Ling. "That’s what we’re trying to determine," she explained. "Right now, we suspect that some damage from the accident has triggered this relapse."
"Accident?" Wei Ling echoed, his voice dropping to a whisper. His shoulders sagged slightly, the weight of the word pressing down on him.
"Yes," the nurse confirmed, her hands still busy adjusting medical equipment. "It seems the accident may have affected a part of his brain. We’re running tests to confirm. If necessary, we’ll prep him for surgery immediately."
Hua Jing’s body went rigid at the word accident.
Her breath came in short gasps as she tried to process what she had just heard. The man lying on that bed had been in an accident. That was why he was in this state.
Her original self also had an accident. This was the only connection between them.
It made her wonder if the accident was connected to hers!
Her mind raced. She turned her gaze back to the patient, desperate to see more, to confirm the identity of the person on that bed. But the nurses didn’t give her a clear view.
Wei Ling stood frozen, his fists trembling at his sides as he stared at the medical team working tirelessly around the bed.
Hua Jing’s legs felt like lead, but she forced herself to take a shaky step closer to the door. Her fingers brushed the doorframe as her eyes remained fixed on the oxygen mask obscuring the man’s face.
Could it be...?
Her thoughts screamed at her.
Could it be Zhao Yan?
Her heart pounded violently, the room around her blurring as she focused solely on the man lying on the bed.
She remembered the way Wei Ling had fiercely sworn loyalty to Zhao Yan in the other world. His emotions now seemed so similar to the devotion he showed there.
Hua Jing’s lips parted as if to speak, but no sound came out.
"Who..." she whispered to herself, her voice barely audible. "Who are you?"
As she stood there, paralyzed by the weight of her suspicions, Wei Ling’s voice broke through the air once more.
"What do you mean relapse?" he asked hoarsely, his eyes never leaving the man on the bed.
The nurse replied, her tone calm but firm. "It’s not uncommon for trauma from an accident to manifest later, even if the patient initially seems stable. We suspect swelling or internal bleeding may be the cause, but we won’t know until we conduct more tests."
Wei Ling took a step back, his shoulders slumping in defeat. He ran a hand through his hair, visibly struggling to maintain his composure.
"Just save him," he said finally, his voice barely above a whisper. "Do whatever you need to, but save him."
The nurse gave him a reassuring nod before returning her attention to the patient.
Hua Jing took another step forward, her fingers tightening on the doorframe.
This wasn’t just a coincidence.
The man on that bed... the one Wei Ling was so desperate to save... there was no doubt in her mind now.
It had to be Zhao Yan.
Didn’t it?
For some reason, fear gripped her heart tightly at the thought and a big part of it wished...
Please let it not be him!
