Chapter 58: We’ll leave later
Zhao Yan smirked but said nothing, his expression one of quiet amusement. Hua Jing was grateful he didn’t retort. If he did, she might stumble over her words and make a fool of herself. She wasn’t ready to confront the turmoil in her chest—the way her heart was racing for reasons she couldn’t understand.
Her emotions felt alien. Never before had she experienced this kind of reaction, not even during her relationship with Xu Ming in her original world. Xu Ming, she thought bitterly. That idiot.
The thought of him was enough to pull her out of her daze. That bastard Xu Ming, who had left her for another woman—a woman who, of all people, turned out to be Hua Ling in her original world! The memory made Hua Jing clench her fists.
She hadn’t seen any signs of Xu Ming in this world so far. Plenty of names had come up since her transmigration, but none that pointed to him. Still, the possibility lingered, gnawing at her. Could he exist in this world? Would Hua Ling find her way to him again, just as she had before?
Hua Jing’s mind swirled with the thought. That pair of scoundrels. Her lips pressed into a thin line, and she stole a glance at Zhao Yan, wondering if he might know of Xu Ming. But one look at him, standing there calm and composed as always, made her second-guess herself. Zhao Yan seemed like someone who had lived his entire life inside the palace, shielded from ordinary matters. How could he know someone like Xu Ming?
Still, she made a mental note to ask Xia Lin later. If anyone might have heard of Xu Ming—or a person resembling him in this world—it would be her.
Zhao Yan, meanwhile, had been quietly observing her changing expressions. His smirk deepened for a brief moment before he shook his head in resignation. Trying to understand Hua Jing would likely take a lifetime, and even then, he wasn’t sure he’d succeed.
"You should get ready," he said, his tone casual but firm. "We’ll leave later."
Hua Jing blinked, his words snapping her out of her spiraling thoughts. She nodded absently as he turned to leave. Her gaze followed him as he exited the room, his figure disappearing through the doorway.
The silence that followed was strangely comforting, allowing her to breathe deeply and sort through her emotions.
Zhao Yan wa doing things to her. Before, she hated the mere presence of him yet now, she did not mind it at all.
She even felt like after going through a life as death situation together, they had somewhat become closer.
This time, Hua Jing did not fight her thoughts.
A soft knock on the door pulled her out of her reverie. Hua Jing turned to see Xia Lin entering, her steps slightly uneven as she limped inside.
"You’re still limping," Hua Jing said, her brows furrowing. "You shouldn’t be overexerting yourself."
Xia Lin waved her hand dismissively, brushing off the concern as if it were nothing. "It’s fine, young lady. I’m tougher than I look."
For some reason, Xia Lin’s face was lit with a cheerful smile. It wasn’t the kind of polite, practiced expression she used in formal settings—it was genuine, almost mischievous.
Hua Jing’s eyes narrowed suspiciously. "What are you smiling about?"
"Nothing," Xia Lin replied quickly, but the glint in her eyes betrayed her. "I just see... a bright future ahead."
The young lady was all chummy with the prince and it was the best thing she could ever ask for!
Gaining the Prince’s favour was something all the other consorts in the palace dreamt about yesterday her young lady could get it without a hassle!
This was excellent!
There were rumors going around the palace that the Prince had never even consummated his marriages with the other consorts .
They had not even been taken to a honeymoon yet Hua Jing had already spent a hot and steamy night with him!
This was just wonderful that Xia Lin thought she w as going to die from happiness!
She motioned vaguely with her hands, gesturing toward something in the air. Hua Jing followed her movements, blinking in confusion.
"Are you feeling all right?" Hua Jing asked, her voice tinged with concern. "You’re not feverish, are you?"
Xia Lin’s grin only widened, but she didn’t elaborate. Hua Jing stared at her, thinking that perhaps the ordeal of the past few days had taken a toll on her maid’s sanity.
Deciding it wasn’t worth dwelling on, Hua Jing rolled her eyes and changed the subject. "Never mind that. I need to ask you something important."
Xia Lin tilted her head, her smile softening as she gave Hua Jing her full attention. "What is it?"
"Do you know a person named Xu Ming?" Hua Jing asked, her tone casual but her eyes sharp.
Instantly, the air in the room shifted. Xia Lin’s posture stiffened, and her cheerful demeanor vanished like a puff of smoke. Her lips pressed into a thin line, and her eyes narrowed in distaste.
"That idiot," Xia Lin said loudly, her voice ringing with unfiltered anger.
Why would the Young Madam ask for that person?
She could not want to go back to him...right?
Hua Jing stared at her, stunned by the sudden hostility. Xia Lin’s reaction was far from what she had expected, and it left her both curious and wary.
Before Hua Jing could press further, Xia Lin’s hands balled into fists, and her glare burned with an intensity that spoke of deeply buried grudges.
The room fell into an uneasy silence, Hua Jing watching her maid carefully, sensing that this question had unleashed something far bigger than she’d anticipated.
From the reaction, Hua Jing instantly guessed that Xu Ming was a jerk in this world as well!
How was it that there was no world where he was a good person?
She clicked her tongue in anger.
Remembering her position now, she knew she had to take the sweet revenge she had been meaning to since her original life!
A cold smile spread on her lips
"Hehe! Just you wait, I’ve gotten a golden thigh and I will use him to crush you!"
