Chapter 50: Let your wife do your job for you

Chapter 50: Let your wife do your job for you

The physician froze, his eyes widening as he turned to Zhao Yan, his expression one of utter disbelief.

"How could you let a woman save you?" he exclaimed, throwing his hands in the air. "You’re the Crown Prince! Do you know how this will reflect on your reputation? Your honor! Tarnished! Completely tarnished!"

Zhao Yan snapped, his patience snapping alongside. "You too! Shut it!"

The outburst only seemed to fuel the physician’s fire. He squinted at Zhao Yan, his tone growing even more incredulous. "So you’ll yell at an old man but let your wife take down your enemies for you? Oh, Your Highness, what a fine image of royalty you present!"

Zhao Yan pinched the bridge of his nose, his patience hanging by a thread, while Hua Jing stood off to the side, watching the scene unfold with an expression of pure delight. But this time, she wasn’t laughing outright. No, she was in full actress mode.

"Yes, Grandpa Physician," she said sweetly, clasping her hands together. "With how much he’s been talking, how about you make him a powerful and bitter concoction? Maybe then he’ll finally stop talking."

The physician’s face lit up like a child on New Year’s. "What a brilliant idea! Absolutely brilliant!" Without another word, he turned and began rummaging through his pouch of herbs, muttering excitedly to himself about ratios and ingredients.

Zhao Yan stared at Hua Jing with an expression that could only be described as exasperation. "Can you two—" He gestured between them, his voice tight. "Can we please focus on treating my wounds instead of... whatever this is?"

The physician didn’t even glance up from his work. "This is also part of the treatment!" he snapped. "Or do you want to do my job for me too, Your Highness?"

Zhao Yan opened his mouth to respond, but no words came out. He was utterly speechless. Hua Jing, on the other hand, was barely holding back her laughter. She covered her mouth with her hand, but her sparkling eyes gave her away completely.

With Hua Jing enthusiastically egging him on, the physician concocted a mixture so dark and ominous that it looked like something straight out of a horror story. When he was done, he handed the bowl to Zhao Yan with a triumphant grin.

"Drink this. It will help with the inflammation," he declared, his tone leaving no room for argument.

Zhao Yan eyed the bowl with visible suspicion. The liquid inside was thick, black, and bubbling slightly. It smelled like damp socks and burnt grass. He hesitated, glancing at Hua Jing, who was watching him with a look that screamed if you spit that out, I’ll mock you for the rest of my life.

With a resigned sigh, Zhao Yan raised the bowl to his lips and took a tentative sip. The bitterness hit him immediately, and his face twisted in agony. He gagged, coughing as he tried to push the taste down.

"Drink it all," the physician ordered, his arms crossed like a stern grandfather.

Zhao Yan glared at the old man before downing the rest of the concoction in one go. His entire body shuddered as the bitter liquid burned its way down his throat.

Hua Jing clapped her hands in mock celebration. "Bravo, Your Highness! You’ve done it! Truly the mightiest prince in all the land."

Zhao Yan shot her a glare that could’ve melted the cave walls. "You’re enjoying this far too much."

"Oh, immensely," Hua Jing replied, smirking.

Once Zhao Yan had finished his "medicine," the physician turned his attention to Hua Jing. His demeanor softened instantly as he examined her injuries, his voice now warm and gentle.

"Young ladies must take care of their appearances," he said, shaking his head as he dabbed at a cut on her cheek. "If you go out with all these bruises and scars, you’ll lose your beauty. You must promise to be more careful in the future."

Hua Jing nodded solemnly, her tone equally serious. "I’ll be careful, Grandpa Physician. I promise."

Zhao Yan, watching this exchange from the side, looked utterly baffled. His face was a mixture of disbelief and irritation as he stared at the physician’s doting behavior.

When the physician finished bandaging her wounds, Hua Jing offered him a bright smile. "Thank you, Grandpa Physician. You’ve done an amazing job."

The old man beamed. "It’s my duty, child. Stay safe."

Hua Jing turned to Zhao Yan, her smirk returning. "See? That wasn’t so bad. You should’ve just listened to him from the beginning."

Zhao Yan groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose again. "Fuck off!"

This time, Hua Jing could not stop the laughter anymore.

It came out unbridled, "Hahahaha!"

Zhao Yan gazed at her as if he was tired of whatever this was yet in the next second, his gaze turned warm.

When she smiled, she looked so beautiful that it was hard for him to come up with something.

He swallowed his words quickly.

...

After the physician had left, Hua Jing wasted no time. She ignored Zhao Yan completely and made her way to the small designated bathroom attached to their shared room.

The maids had already prepared a tub of warm water, steam rising gently into the chilly air.

Hua Jing sighed as she immersed herself into the soothing water, the warmth wrapping around her like a comforting embrace.

The physician had tied her wounds expertly, ensuring no water would seep in, and for that, she was grateful.

She leaned back, closing her eyes for a moment, letting the tension of the day melt away.

It had been exhausting—carrying Zhao Yan, fighting off enemies, enduring bitter concoctions.

She allowed herself a small smile as she remembered the physician’s reprimands to the prince. "Serves him right," she muttered softly, splashing water onto her face.

Once she was done, Hua Jing quickly dried herself off and changed into the clean clothes left for her by the maids.

The fresh fabric felt soft against her skin, and she couldn’t help but feel a bit renewed despite the chaos of the past few hours.

As she stepped out of the bathroom, her eyes immediately caught Zhao Yan’s gaze.

He was lying on the single bed, his arm resting behind his head, but his eyes were unmistakably fixed on her.

"What?"
