Chapter 46: Your words cut so deep
Hua Jing teased, a playful grin spreading across her lips.
Zhao Yan’s eyes narrowed as he replied sharply, "Ridiculous."
Hua Jing blinked, tilting her head in mock confusion.
"Then what is it? Why have you taken me away from them and onto your side?"
Zhao Yan opened his mouth to speak but hesitated before muttering, "Just..."
"Just what?" Hua Jing pressed, leaning closer, her curiosity clearly piqued.
Zhao Yan looked away, his jaw tightening.
Hua Jing’s lips quirked into a mischievous smirk.
"If it’s the affection they’re giving me, I can return it to you," she said with exaggerated sweetness.
Zhao Yan shot her a suspicious glance.
"I mean it," Hua Jing continued, her tone light and teasing.
"I’ll go back there right now and tell them, ’The prince doesn’t like you being so good to me. You should be good to him only.’ I’m serious! I’ll do it."
Zhao Yan rolled his eyes, the corners of his lips twitching despite himself.
"Boring," he muttered dismissively.
Hua Jing stifled a laugh.
"Ah, I see now," she said, her tone turning playful as she leaned in closer, her gaze fixing on Zhao Yan’s mask.
The mask seemed almost out of place under the cold night sky, and the way her eyes sparkled with amusement only made him more wary.
Zhao Yan stiffened, his eyes widening.
"You are jealous," Hua Jing declared triumphantly, her grin widening.
"I am not!" Zhao Yan snapped, his voice laced with irritation.
"That’s ridiculous!"
But his tone lacked conviction, and Hua Jing caught onto it immediately.
She burst into laughter, her hands clapping together as she doubled over in glee.
"Stop that," Zhao Yan growled, his scowl deepening.
But Hua Jing ignored him entirely, her laughter echoing through the quiet night.
"I cannot believe this," she said between chuckles.
"The mighty prince, jealous of little old me getting closer to other people. Who would’ve thought?"
Zhao Yan’s glare intensified, but Hua Jing only grinned wider.
"Well, Your Highness," she continued, her voice dripping with mock sincerity, "if you like me that much, all you have to do is say it. Just say the word, and I’ll definitely do whatever you ask."
Zhao Yan raised a brow, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Will you?" he asked, his tone skeptical.
"No," Hua Jing replied instantly, her grin widening even further.
Zhao Yan exhaled sharply, his frustration evident.
"You’re impossible," he muttered.
"Thank you," Hua Jing quipped, flashing him a bright smile.
"I’ll take that as a compliment."
Zhao Yan stared at her for a moment, his lips pressing into a thin line.
"You’re not even trying to deny it, are you?" he asked, exasperation coloring his tone.
"Why should I?" Hua Jing replied with a shrug.
"Besides, you should be grateful. I’m making your life more interesting."
"My life was perfectly fine before you came along," Zhao Yan shot back.
Hua Jing gasped dramatically, clutching her chest as if she had been wounded.
She wanted to tell him that he was the one who had chosen her himself but her gaze was blatantly obvious and she knew he understood.
"Ouch! Your words cut so deep, Your Highness," she said with mock despair.
Zhao Yan sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.
The longer he stared at her, the longer his frustration grew.
She was making him feel things.
Yet, as he gazed at Hua Jing, something shifted within him.
Her impish grin, the way her words always managed to rile him up, even her defiance—there was something oddly calming about it all.
He found himself wanting to bicker even more with her even if that was what it took for the two of them to communicate better.
He also thought there was no way the two of them would communicate differently other than argue.
This was...
He couldn’t deny the strange sense of peace that settled in his chest when she was around.
Though he wouldn’t admit it aloud, the jealousy he’d felt earlier lingered, buried beneath layers of pride.
Why did the thought of her comforting others bother him so much?
It was a question he wasn’t ready to answer. But deep within, he knew.
Hua Jing had become a fixture in his thoughts, a presence he couldn’t ignore.
In mere hours, his perspective of her had shifted completely.
This new version of Hua Jing, bold and unapologetically herself, kept him on his toes in ways no one else ever had.
She was infuriating, yes, but also... intriguing.
His lips twitched slightly, almost forming a smile before he caught himself.
"What?" Hua Jing asked, catching his expression.
"Nothing," Zhao Yan replied, his tone clipped, but his heart felt lighter.
They continued walking, their bickering filling the otherwise quiet path.
Ahead, Wei Ling and Deng Mi walked silently, their postures stiff and formal.
But the occasional side glance they exchanged spoke volumes.
Neither of them dared to comment on the prince’s uncharacteristic behavior, though they couldn’t hide their curiosity.
Further ahead, the other men in the group were less reserved.
"I’ve never seen the prince like this before," one of them whispered, his voice low but brimming with excitement.
Another nodded enthusiastically.
"Did you see how they were standing earlier? So close to each other! I almost thought they were about to—"
"Shh! Don’t say that!" a third interrupted, though his grin betrayed his amusement.
The first soldier chuckled.
"But it’s true! Have you ever heard the prince speak so much? This is the first time I’ve heard him say more than ten words in one go!"
"Exactly!" the second chimed in.
"And he’s smiling, too. Well, almost. But still! The seventh consort must be a miracle worker!"
Another soldier added, "I think they’re in love. It’s written all over their faces."
Hua Jing heard that and her lips twitched.
Was this what these people considered love?
It was utterly ridiculous!
Their whispers grew softer, but their excitement was palpable.
Hua Jing, walking just behind Zhao Yan, caught snippets of their conversation and bit back a laugh.
She saw this as an opportunity to start another wave of word of words with the prince!
She leaned closer to Zhao Yan, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
"Did you hear that, Your Highness?" she teased.
Zhao Yan knew what she was trying to do yet he still indulged her
"Hear what?"
