Chapter 44: love in his eyes

Before Zhao Yan finished what he was saying, his body stilled while his ears perked.

Hua Jing, on the other hand, had the same reaction.

She looked at Zhao Yan warily, her ears also perking to hear what was happening outside.

The two could hear it clearly...

They could hear footsteps followed by murmurs, which were unrelenting.

Hua Jing clenched her fists.

They could not risk a fight right now—not in their condition.

Zhao Yan was injured.

His hand had been cut multiple times, and the wound was very deep.

She also had some injuries to her body.

When she looked down, she realized they had been treated at some point.

She looked at Zhao Yan because he was the only one there with her, so it had to be him who addressed her injuries.

He could be quite sweet... Hua Jing thought yet in the next second, she almost slapped herself for even thinking of such a thing!

A small smile threatened to escape, yet the situation they were in right now could not allow for her to do so.

Hua Jing’s body stiffened, her senses on high alert.

The faint sound of footsteps outside the cave still sent a shiver down her spine.

Zhao Yan immediately pushed her behind him, his hand resting protectively on her arm.

Hua Jing could feel the calluses from his charred arm, and it must have stung when he did that.

She let out an exaggerated sigh and rolled her eyes.

"Do you always have to do that?" she whispered.

She was not some little child in need of protection.

He had already seen what she was capable of.

Yet, for some reason, it was becoming quite a habit.

Zhao Yan ignored her, his focus entirely on the sound outside.

The soft crunch of snow underfoot grew louder with every passing second, while their hearts beat almost in sync with the footsteps outside.

"They’re getting closer," Zhao Yan said softly.

Hua Jing’s ears perked up, her body language quickly shifting.

Her stance became tense, a clear indication she was ready for anything.

The two of them stood in silence.

The only sound was the crackle of the fire slowly dying out.

Hua Jing glanced at the fire and muttered a curse under her breath.

"They’ll see the shadows," she hissed.

Zhao Yan nodded grimly.

The fire had been burning quite brightly.

If those outside followed the shadows it cast, they would definitely find them quicker.

Hua Jing stared at the flickering fire.

It was casting wild shadows against the cave walls, making them an easy target.

The footsteps outside stopped abruptly, just outside the cave.

Murmurs quickly followed.

Though faint at first, the voices soon became louder.

"Do you think His Highness is in there?" a male voice asked.

It sounded exhausted but still carried a hint of hope.

Hua Jing’s breath hitched as she turned to Zhao Yan, her eyes wide.

"They’re looking for you," she whispered.

Zhao Yan’s face darkened.

His hand moved instinctively to the hilt of his sword, even though his injured arm protested the motion.

Hua Jing clenched her fists.

They couldn’t risk fighting right now—not in their condition.

Another voice quickly chimed in, this one sharp and commanding.

"Search the cave. The rest of you spread out. Leave no stone unturned. Ensure you find the prince, and if you do, protect him with your life."

There were a few seconds of silence before several people replied in unison.

"Yes, sir!"

Hua Jing froze.

That voice sounded familiar.

Her mind raced as she tried to place it, and then it clicked.

The same man who had stared at her weirdly when she went to Zhao Yan’s room this evening.

The same one she had seen by his side the day before when they were supposed to have lunch.

It was none other than Wei Ling!

Zhao Yan’s expression also shifted—a mixture of relief and suspicion crossing his features.

He listened keenly as the voice spoke again.

"Deng Mi, the cave in front—let’s go and search it."

Zhao Yan finally recognized the voice.

It was Wei Ling walking outside.

The two of them waited inside as Deng Mi and Wei Ling’s footsteps reached the entrance of the cave.

The silhouettes of the two men appeared.

They quickly entered the cave and stopped in their tracks, surprised to find Zhao Yan and Hua Jing standing quite intimately.

Wei Ling’s expression changed when he realized it was them.

He said in a voice full of unhidden excitement, "Your Highness, is that you?"

Zhao Yan nodded.

Hua Jing sighed exasperatedly, her voice loud.

"Wow, I really thought I was going to break a few more bones today. Luckily, you guys have come just right on time."

Wei Ling’s lips twitched.

Deng Mi quickly walked over with a coat and draped it over Zhao Yan.

"Your Highness, it is cold, and you’re wearing little," he said.

He produced another smaller coat and handed it to Zhao Yan.

"This is for the Seventh Consort."

Zhao Yan nodded and proceeded to put the coat on Hua Jing.

Before he could do so, Hua Jing snatched the coat.

She said in a mocking tone, "I am not a child needing you to dress me. Give that to me—I can dress myself."

Zhao Yan’s eyes widened.

"May I remind you that you are speaking to the prince?"

Hua Jing rolled her eyes.

"My dear prince, right now I really do not care whether you are the prince or not. All I care about is getting the hell out of here and having a nice warm bath."

Wei Ling almost wanted to throttle her for speaking like that.

But when he glanced at Zhao Yan, he noticed something strange.

The prince was staring at Hua Jing—not as if he wanted to kill her like before.

But this time, his gaze had changed.

Even with Hua Jing being totally disrespectful, the prince was looking at her with...

Was that love in the prince’s eyes?
