Chapter 35: Revered goddess of self-sacrifice!

The air was cold and still, the snow crunching beneath their boots as they walked side by side down the winding path.

The hills stretched endlessly ahead, their shapes softened by the thick blanket of snow.

Hua Jing’s feet were lost numb yet the shelter did not seem anywhere near.

She sneezed once and Zhao Yan momentarily stopped before resuming his walk like he heard nothing.

Hua Jing shivered, pulling her robes tighter around herself. She glanced at Zhao Yan, who walked a step ahead of her, his expression grim as ever.

"You know," Zhao Yan began, breaking the silence, "I can’t believe you were that reckless back there."

Hua Jing rolled her eyes, already bracing herself for one of his lectures.

"Reckless?" she echoed. "What part of saving someone’s life qualifies as reckless?"

"That was a burning building," Zhao Yan said sharply, stopping in his tracks to glare at her.

"You could have been trapped. You could have died. What would I have told the palace if something happened to you?"

The fire had spread too quickly as he had no way to know how and when it started. If anything bad happened to her, he would not have known what to do!

Hua Jing was seriously too reckless!

Hua Jing tilted her head, pretending to think. Then she looked at him as if he’d just said the most obvious thing in the world.

"You tell them I died heroically," she said with a dramatic flair, "rescuing a poor, innocent servant. I’m sure they’d even put a golden plaque on my tombstone. Maybe I’ll become a revered goddess of self-sacrifice!"

He once read somewhere that people liked saviours especially when a high ranking person like her saved a poor servant, they would even worship the ground she walked on!

Zhao Yan stared at her, utterly speechless.

For a full minute, he just stood there, his jaw tightening as if he was holding back every retort that came to mind.

Finally, he muttered something under his breath—something she couldn’t hear—and turned on his heel to continue walking.

Hua Jing smirked triumphantly. "Guess I won that argument," she muttered under her breath.

"Hey! Wait for me!" she called after him, her smirk fading as she hurried to catch up.

"I don’t know this place very well!"

Zhao Yan didn’t respond, but she noticed his steps faltered ever so slightly, slowing just enough for her to close the gap between them.

As she drew closer, her gaze drifted down to his hands.

They hung stiffly at his sides, the skin charred and blistered. Even in the dim light, she could see how raw and painful they looked.

Her heart clenched.

She remembered how she’d found him earlier, kneeling by the burning wood, trying to lift it with his bare hands. The frantic desperation in his eyes had been unlike anything she’d ever seen.

She hadn’t thought much of it at the time, but now...

Now she wondered.

She hurried to his side and grabbed his arm, forcing him to stop.

"Wait," she said firmly.

Zhao Yan turned to her, his brow furrowing in confusion.

"What now?" he asked, his tone laced with irritation.

Hua Jing ignored his tone, reaching for the sash at her waist. She tugged at it until it tore free, then ripped a strip of fabric from the hem of her robe.

"What are you doing?" Zhao Yan asked, his confusion deepening as she moved toward him.

"Hold still," Hua Jing said briskly.

Before he could protest, she took one of his hands and began wrapping the fabric around it.

The wounds were much worse than she had imagined. Because of the cold, Zhao Yan could not feel any pain but still...

Hua Jing thought he was an idiot for not speaking out!

She wanted to point out how idiotic he looked but seeing the wounds again made her shut the hell up.

The cold air stung her fingertips, but she didn’t stop. The improvised bandage was far from perfect, but it was better than leaving his wounds exposed to the elements.

Zhao Yan watched her in stunned silence, too shocked to pull his hand away.

She was very close to him...

Too close...

The warmth she was radiating engulfed him completely making him feel uncomfortable. He coughed lightly and then looked away.

When she finished with one hand, she moved to the other, her movements quick and efficient.

"You didn’t have to do this," Zhao Yan said quietly, his voice lacking its usual edge.

Hua Jing glanced up at him, her expression unreadable.

"You didn’t have to try and save me," she countered.

Zhao Yan opened his mouth to argue, but no words came out. Instead, he closed his mouth and looked away, his jaw tightening.

---

When she finished bandaging his hands, Hua Jing stepped back, brushing the snow off her own fingers.

"That should do for now," she said, her tone lighter.

"When we reach a safe place, I’ll take care of them properly."

Zhao Yan flexed his fingers experimentally, his expression softening despite himself.

He then said something out of the ordinary,

"Thank you," he said quietly.

Hua Jing smiled faintly, tucking the remaining fabric into her sleeve.

She wanted to retort butshe sensed the sincerity in his tone and swallowed the words

"You’re welcome," she said simply.

For a moment, neither of them said anything. The only sound was the crunch of snow underfoot and the faint rustle of the wind through the trees.

Then Hua Jing broke the silence.

"You know," she said, her voice thoughtful, "for someone who claims to be annoyed by me, you seem awfully eager to keep me alive."

Zhao Yan scoffed, though his lips twitched as if he was suppressing a smile.

"Don’t flatter yourself," he said dryly.

Hua Jing laughed softly, shaking her head as they resumed walking.

"I’m just saying," she said lightly. "You’re not as heartless as you pretend to be."

Zhao Yan didn’t respond, but she noticed the corners of his mouth twitch again, just for a moment.

She smiled as well but it dropped the moment she heard something moved from in front of them.

Zhao Yan froze too and turned to her, his face cautious.

He had seen it too!

The shadow that just passed!
