Chapter 30: They are here to kill you

Hua Jing’s hands gripped Zhao Yan’s arm tightly as she pushed him aside.

An instant later, a loud thwack echoed through the room as an arrow tore through the wall, embedding itself in the study’s wooden floor.

Both of them turned to stare at it, their eyes wide with shock.

The arrow’s tip wasn’t ordinary—it was ablaze, a bright orange flame crackling violently against the wood.

The fire licked hungrily at the flimsy curtains nearby, catching onto the fabric in mere seconds.

"Fire!" someone outside shouted, their voice frantic.

Zhao Yan moved first, yanking Hua Jing away from the growing flames as smoke began to billow into the room.

The smell of burning wood and fabric filled the air, thick and suffocating.

Hua Jing coughed, her gaze darting to the gaping hole in the wall where the arrow had entered.

Her mind raced.

Who could be strong enough to shoot an arrow clean through a wall?

She turned to Zhao Yan, her face pale but resolute.

"We need to get out of here!" she urged.

Zhao Yan was already on high alert, his sharp eyes scanning the room for any other threats.

Before he could respond, the door to the study burst open with a loud crash.

Wei Ling and Deng Mi stormed in, their faces grim and their swords drawn.

"Your Highness!" Wei Ling shouted.

"There’s been an ambush!"

Zhao Yan nodded sharply, already piecing things together.

His gaze flicked to the flames spreading through the room, the smoke curling around them like a deadly serpent.

"Who dares to attack me here?" he muttered, his voice low and dangerous.

Hua Jing grabbed his sleeve, her own expression filled with urgency.

"This isn’t just an ambush," she said, her tone firm.

"They’re here to kill you."

Zhao Yan turned to Hua Jing, his sharp eyes narrowing.

"And how would you know that?" he demanded.

Hua Jing pointed toward the gaping hole in the wall, her expression resolute.

"Look at where the arrow pierced through," she said.

"The person who shot it knew exactly where you were sitting. If you hadn’t moved in time, the arrow would have gone straight through your heart."

Zhao Yan turned to study the arrow and the path it had carved through the wall.

From his sitting position earlier, the line of trajectory was unmistakable.

It pointed directly to where his chest had been moments before.

His jaw tightened.

If Hua Jing hadn’t pushed him aside, he would be dead by now.

Wei Ling’s voice broke through the tense silence.

"We don’t have time for this," he said urgently.

"Some of the servants are still in their quarters. We need to get out and save as many as we can!"

Before anyone could respond, a sharp twang echoed through the room.

Two arrows shot through the wall simultaneously, their deadly tips aimed directly at Zhao Yan once more.

"Get down!" Hua Jing shouted, shoving him out of the way with all her strength.

They both fell to the ground as the arrows embedded themselves into the wooden floor, mere inches from where Zhao Yan had been standing.

Hua Jing glared at him as she caught her breath, a small smirk tugging at her lips.

"That’s twice now," she said, her tone teasing despite the danger.

"You owe me your life, Your Highness."

Zhao Yan stared at her, incredulous.

"How can you joke at a time like this?" he muttered, shaking his head.

But Hua Jing was already moving.

She grabbed his hand without thinking, her grip firm.

"Come on!" she said.

"We need to get out of here!"

Zhao Yan allowed her to pull him to his feet, his mind racing as the chaos around them escalated.

The two of them sprinted out of the study, the heat of the flames licking at their backs.

When they emerged into the open courtyard, the scene was far worse than they had imagined.

Servants were running in every direction, their shouts mingling with the crackling roar of the fire.

"Fire! Fire!" someone screamed, their voice hoarse with panic.

Thick smoke hung heavy in the air, making it difficult to see more than a few feet ahead.

The flames had spread rapidly, consuming everything in their path.

The wooden structures that made up Zhao Yan’s temporary residence were no match for the inferno.

Hua Jing’s eyes widened as she took in the chaos.

"This is madness," she muttered.

Zhao Yan’s gaze swept across the courtyard, his expression dark.

"This place was designed for safety," he said, his voice low and tense.

"Whoever planned this knew exactly how to strike."

Hua Jing’s grip on his hand tightened as she pulled him forward.

"There’s no time to figure that out now," she said.

"We need to move!"

The two of them dashed through the courtyard, dodging falling debris and clusters of panicked servants.

The heat was unbearable, the flames casting eerie shadows against the night sky.

Smoke stung their eyes and filled their lungs, making it difficult to breathe.

"This way!" Wei Ling’s voice called out from ahead, his figure barely visible through the haze.

He waved them toward a side gate where Deng Mi was helping guide a group of servants to safety.

Hua Jing glanced over her shoulder, her heart pounding.

The fire was spreading faster than she’d thought possible.

They didn’t have much time.

"Move!" she shouted, urging Zhao Yan forward as they ran toward the gate.

The sound of splintering wood echoed behind them as another section of the building collapsed, sending a shower of sparks into the air.

Once they reached outside, all the servants who had been saved stood in front of them.

Even in the midst of such a tragedy, they still bowed when they saw Zhao Yan.

It was so comical that Hua Jing almost laughed out loud but seeing the situation, she held it in.

Zhao Yan suddenly asked, "Is everyone here?"

The head of the servants quickly looked around before turning to the Prince and bowing, "Everyone is here, Your Highness."

Zhao Yan released a breath but Hua Jing’s face fell.

She looked around herself and felt like someone else was not here.

She looked again and her face turned pale

Xia Lin was missing!

She turned around and started running towards the flames!
