Chapter 130: Even you know I can’t stay away from you
Chapter 130: Even you know I can’t stay away from you
Hua Jing blinked.
The scent of sandalwood and something faintly familiar enveloped her senses.
Her vision blurred slightly before sharpening.
A strong, steady hand rested against the small of her back, holding her upright as if she weighed nothing. Another hand pressed against her wrist, fingers firm yet gentle, as though gauging her condition.
She tried to lift her head.
Tried to see the face of the one who had caught her.
But before she could—
"Hua Jing."
That voice.
Deep. Smooth. Commanding.
Recognition slammed into her.
No.
Not now.
Her fingers twitched against the fabric of his robe.
White.
His robes were white.
Not the dark ones he had been wearing when she last saw him.
Not the heavy ceremonial attire from the banquet.
Not the ones she had memorized.
But even if she hadn’t seen his face yet, she knew.
Zhao Yan.
Her body tensed instinctively.
Why?
Why was he here?
Xia Lin gasped beside her, eyes darting between the prince and her mistress, her face a mixture of shock and something dangerously close to amusement.
"Your Highness..." she whispered, quickly lowering her head.
Hua Jing, on the other hand, felt her stomach churn.
This was not part of her plan.
She needed space.
She needed time to process the avalanche of memories that had just assaulted her.
But Zhao Yan—Fu Jing Rong—
He was here.
And he was watching her.
His grip was strong, his body steady, as though he had no intention of letting go.
"Let. Me. Go."
Her voice came out colder than she expected.
His fingers tightened for just a fraction of a second.
Then, in a slow, measured movement—he released her.
Hua Jing staggered but caught herself before Xia Lin could reach out.
She took a step back.
Then another.
Then—
"What," she hissed, finally looking up, "are you doing here?"
Zhao Yan said nothing at first.
His eyes—dark and unreadable—studied her.
There was something in his gaze, something unreadable, something frustratingly composed.
Finally, his lips parted.
"I came to find you."
A sharp laugh escaped her.
"Of course, you did," she muttered under her breath.
She turned on her heel, trying to suppress the headache still pounding at her skull.
Zhao Yan was still watching.
Still waiting.
As if he expected something.
As if he knew something.
And Hua Jing hated that.
She exhaled sharply and ran a hand through her hair.
"You’re wasting your time," she said flatly.
Zhao Yan remained silent.
Unmoving.
Unshaken.
Hua Jing hated that even more.
Then, in a voice so quiet, so smooth, it sent a chill down her spine, he said—
"I saw you fall."
Hua Jing stilled.
Zhao Yan took a step closer.
His eyes were sharper now, no longer just unreadable but searching.
His voice dipped lower.
"You looked like you were remembering something."
Hua Jing swallowed.
Her fingers curled into fists.
He had seen.
He knew.
And that realization sent a bolt of frustration straight through her chest.
She needed to leave.
Before he could say anything else.
Before he could pry any further.
But Zhao Yan—
He wasn’t finished.
Before she could turn away, his next words froze her in place—
"You remember now, don’t you?"
Hua Jing barely spared him a glance as she stepped forward.
"It does not matter whether I remember or not," she said coolly, her voice carrying no hint of emotion.
Then, without waiting for a response, she turned sharply on her heel and walked away.
Xia Lin, still reeling from the exchange, hurried after her.
The maid’s gaze flickered between Hua Jing and Zhao Yan, confusion laced in her expression.
She had expected tension—Hua Jing was always quick to push the prince away.
But this?
This felt different.
There was something brewing beneath the surface, something unspoken between them, something Xia Lin couldn’t quite place.
She wanted to ask.
She wanted to demand an explanation.
But one glance at Hua Jing’s expression told her that now was not the time.
So she swallowed her curiosity and fell into step beside her mistress.
But Zhao Yan—
He didn’t move.
He stood there, his eyes locked onto Hua Jing’s retreating figure.
Dark. Calculating.
Then, slowly, his gaze drifted across the courtyard.
His jaw clenched.
His fingers twitched.
This place.
It was small, almost insignificant compared to the grandeur of the Hua Manor.
And yet, as he stood there, staring at the worn-out wooden beams and faded walls, something inside of him twisted.
Hua Jing had lived here.
Alone.
Unwanted.
And suddenly, everything—the way she carried herself, the walls she built around her heart, the fire in her eyes—
It all made sense.
His grip tightened at his side.
Then, with a quiet breath, he exhaled and turned on his heel.
He followed.
Not too fast, not too slow.
Hua Jing’s shoulders stiffened at the sound of his steps behind her.
She whirled around, exasperated.
"You don’t need to follow us."
Zhao Yan tilted his head.
"Don’t I?"
Hua Jing’s brow twitched.
Xia Lin, sensing another argument brewing, held her breath.
Zhao Yan took a step closer.
"If you don’t remember clearly," he said, voice calm, measured, "I was also invited to this wedding. Remember?"
Hua Jing clenched her jaw.
Damn it.
He was right.
Of course, he was right.
That didn’t mean she had to like it.
Her lips pressed into a thin line.
Xia Lin, caught between amusement and concern, kept silent.
Finally, with an irritated sigh, Hua Jing turned back around and continued walking.
"Fine," she muttered under her breath. "Do what you want."
Zhao Yan smirked.
He already was.
Xia Lin watched these two in surprise and some hint of amusement.
These two... Ah!
Hua Jing did not spare Zhao Yan a glance yet he was already by her side. She tried moving away yet he was faster and just like these, the two looked like they were playing some sort of game only the two understood.
Hua Jing got tired and shouted at him, "Can you just leave me alone?"
She looked frustrated.
Zhao Yan looked her dead in the eyes, tone serious and said, "Even you know I can’t...stay away from you!"
