On the towering snow-capped mountain, Shao Zifeng put away his phone and marked the coordinates of the recently discovered mutant creature group on his wristwatch.
By then, they had already moved far from the ice dome’s Point A.
After doing all this, the raging cold wind made Shao Zifeng tighten his protective suit and huddle against Qiuqiu’s body.
“Woo~”
The warm air stream hit Shao Zifeng’s face.
Qiuqiu rubbed Shao Zifeng’s cheek and then buried its large head in his chest, whimpering and acting coquettishly.
“Eat something.”
Taking out the little remaining nutritional meal and fire energy potion from the pet beast space, he carefully fed it to Qiuqiu.
“Woo~”
After eating, Qiuqiu blinked its big eyes at him.
“You should sleep a bit, we still have to hurry later.”
Gently patting Qiuqiu’s hard Scale Armor and watching the little one fall asleep, Shao Zifeng’s eyes filled with pity.
To hurry along, Qiuqiu had forced itself to fly over four hundred kilometers today using its wings of flame.
By the time he noticed something was off, the little one had already entered a semi-conscious state, which deeply distressed Shao Zifeng.
The warm heat emanating from Qiuqiu drove away the severe cold surrounding them.
Shao Zifeng’s body fluctuated with its breathing.
Looking at the densely marked wristwatch, he sighed.
This journey made Shao Zifeng realize that the situation in the Antarctic was more exaggerated than he had imagined, with over thirty groups of mutant creatures documented by Qiuqiu alone.
A straight line, from the ice dome’s Point A to his current position, surprisingly had over thirty groups of mutant creatures without any detours.
This was beyond his imagination before.
Although due to time constraints, he hadn’t checked the strength of those groups, in such harsh environments, these mutant creatures being even of intermediate level was a terrifying force indeed.
On the other side of the wristwatch screen, a red light representing the scientific research team blinked, indicating an update on their latest position.
“Only a little over a hundred kilometers left to the heartland.”
Shao Zifeng turned off the wristwatch, gazed up at the lead-gray sky, and his shoulder-length hair trembled in the cold wind.
“I hope you don’t encounter any dangers.”
…
“Snap!”
The red Fire Phoenix Pheasants crossed each other in flight, and Blast Bombs rained down like raindrops.
Exploding into deep craters a dozen meters long, diffusing smoke mixed with snow vapor covered a large area.
“Roar!”
An angry roar echoed as the dense smoke violently churned, and a huge enraged bear burst out.
It furiously stared at the Fire Phoenix Pheasants in mid-air, letting out thunderous roars.
Zhao Li observed the bear’s condition closely.
Its white fur was singed in places, with a faint red glow shimmering between the hairs.
Boom!
Suddenly, the bear rose on its hind legs, smashing the incoming Blast Bombs with fists entwined in ice, engulfing itself in a big flash of fire as it roared defiantly.
Seeing the right moment, Zhao Li pressed a switch on his helmet and said in a deep voice, “Explode!”
“Yes, explode!”
The bear with glowing red eyes suddenly stiffened, and the red glow beneath its charred fur formed patches of flame feathers.
Rumble!
A mushroom cloud wrapped in blood mist formed out of nowhere, and the resulting shockwaves swept the surrounding snow clean.
As the smoke cleared, only a charred deep crater remained on the ground.
Zhao Li sighed with relief.
“Hao Zi, you and Kai Zi go check it out, everyone else rest here.”
“Yes!”
“Vice captain, how was my coordination just now?”
The young man accompanying Tong Hao looked playfully at Zhao Li.
“Get lost.”
Zhao Li glared at him annoyed, watching the two young men leave laughing, a smile appeared on the corners of his mouth. He slightly cleaned the blood stains off himself and walked towards Chen Yixin standing behind.
“Professor.”
Zhao Li looked straight ahead, saluting her.
“Hmm.” Wrapped in a bulky protective suit, Chen Yixin cradling an Ice Plateau Saber-Toothed Tiger, looked down at her wristwatch and said softly, “I know what you want to say, prepare to head back.”
“I… Yes!”
Zhao Li’s expression was slightly stunned.
Expecting to have expended some persuasion, he hadn’t yet spoken when Chen Yixin had already issued the retreat command.
Since the objective was achieved, Zhao Li said no more and turned to leave and make arrangements.
“By the way.”
“This time, you all worked hard.”
Zhao Li’s footsteps halted.
Chen Yixin’s voice was cold, yet her words warmed his heart.
Ever since Shao Zifeng went missing,
Chen Yixin said those words to them, a breath of fury lodged in every member of the Fire Phoenix forces.
Young men who would compete even in singing couldn’t stand such words.
But now,
a simple sentence nearly broke his guard.
All the grievances seemed to dissipate.
“Ah–”
“Kai Zi!”
“Damn it, put Kai Zi down!”
“Fire Phoenix Pheasant, attack!”
“Crack!”
Boom!
In just a moment, various sounds erupted around Zhao Li, he looked up ahead, his mind buzzing.
He saw Kai Zi held by a gigantic ice hand, blood spurting from his helmet, glaring red.
He saw Tong Hao being pulled by two men, yet he knelt on the ground, stretching out a hand as if trying to reach a teammate.
He saw the disheveled Fire Phoenix Pheasant opening its mouth, firing a series of blast bombs trailing flames towards that arm.
Yet, everything seemed frozen in time.
He stood there, stunned.
“What are you waiting for? Rescue him!”
Suddenly, he was pushed from behind.
In an instant, time seemed to flow again.
Zhao Li jolted all over.
Just about to issue a combat order, he hesitated upon seeing Chen Yixin.
“Everyone, retreat immediately and escort Professor Chen away.”
As his order was issued, Tong Hao stopped struggling, turned his head incredulously looking at Zhao Li.
The other members of the Fire Phoenix forces also ceased their actions.
The Fire Phoenix Pheasant continued attacking in mid-air, all eyes focused on Zhao Li.
“You’re insane!”
Chen Yixin shouted at Zhao Li, who ignored her utterly.
He scanned around, “I said, retreat immediately and escort Professor Chen away!”
“Zhao Li, you son of a bitch!” the most hot-tempered Tong Hao suddenly stood up, his eyes red, pointing at him and cursing, “Damn you! I treated you like a brother, goddamn coward…”
No matter how Tong Hao cursed, Zhao Li kept silent.
“Damn it!” Tong Hao spat at him, “If you won’t rescue him, I’ll do it myself.”
“Tong Hao!”
The always silent Zhao Li suddenly roared, “Don’t forget who you are.”
“Everyone, retreat immediately! Protect Professor Chen and leave this place!”
Chen Yixin opened her mouth, she wasn’t naive, having seen comrades die before her eyes multiple times.
As the leader, she often had the liberty to act wilfully.
But in times like this, she didn’t have much say.
Looking deeply at Zhao Li, Chen Yixin ran with those beside her toward the all-terrain vehicle.
Tong Hao walked up to Zhao Li, bumped him with his shoulder deliberately, and said emphatically, “Remember, you owe Kai Zi a life.”
“The task below is up to you.”
Tong Hao was startled, quickly turned around, “What do you mean.”
“This guy is tough, someone needs to hold him off to buy time for the retreat.” Zhao Li didn’t turn back but gestured with his hand, “Every year around this time, don’t forget to have a drink with me.”
After speaking, his Fire Phoenix Pheasant landed.
Zhao Li pulled down his face shield, mounted it.
“Crack!”
The Fire Phoenix Pheasant cried out, flapping its wings and took off.
Watching the figure on the Fire Phoenix Pheasant, Tong Hao trembled.
“Zhao Li, you bastard! Why the hell are you entrusting the team to me!”
“You’re just a coward!”
Tong Hao yelled loudly, his voice breaking.
In mid-air, Zhao Li paused.
He gave a thumbs up.
“Crack!”
The retreating Fire Phoenix Pheasants made way, sorrowfully watching their comrade go against the flow.
