Chapter 284: Chapter 284: Keep a Low Profile, Get Things Done Easily
Walking to the subway station was always enough for many students to spot them.
So this time, Lu Youxi didn’t say anything and got into a taxi.
As Lin Jingshen had noted before, Jing University was massive, divided into many colleges, which in turn encompassed numerous majors.
With so many colleges and students, not everyone knew Lu Youxi.
Some people recognized Lu Youxi and couldn’t help but take a few extra glances at Zhou Shuyan.
They whispered to their companions, "Isn’t that Lu Youxi’s husband?"
"Yes, he’s been here a few times before. I’ve only seen him once, but I remember him very clearly because he’s really handsome," his companion whispered back.
"Her husband seems to have a great temperament; you wouldn’t guess he’s from the countryside," a girl said, quickly adding, "I don’t mean to look down on rural people, it’s just that Lu Youxi’s husband has a really good demeanor."
"Yes," the companion said nonchalantly with a smile. "Even among city folks, how many can match the temperament of her husband? That calm composure, as if he’s accustomed to grand scenes, is truly puzzling."
"Right, the way he’s dressed in a suit, it seems like he has a decent job, doesn’t it?" the girl remarked. "There were even rumors before that Lu Youxi’s husband worked at a construction site moving bricks. That just doesn’t seem right."
"Those were all speculations. And by the way they put it, it wasn’t necessarily about moving bricks, just that they thought her husband couldn’t find a particularly good job," the companion said. "But looking at him now, it really doesn’t seem like it."
"True. Just now, the way he opened the car door for Lu Youxi to get in almost made me think it wasn’t a taxi but a luxury car. It would have fit right in," the girl whispered.
Lu Youxi was still unaware that Zhou Shuyan’s mere presence had cleared up many rumors.
Most importantly, those rumors had originally been spread by Lu Youxi herself.
All in the name of keeping a low profile.
Although Zhou Shuyan was indeed an ordinary office worker, Lu Youxi instinctively felt they should be even more discreet.
Being discreet made things easier.
Little did they know, this trip by Zhou Shuyan had shattered the image she had carefully managed.
In the taxi, with the driver present, Zhou Shuyan couldn’t do much.
He could only obediently hold Lu Youxi’s hand, gently pinching her fingers and palms here and there.
He couldn’t help but sigh inwardly, wondering when he would find a good opportunity to come clean.
Then they wouldn’t need to take taxis anymore.
He could drive himself and kiss Lu Youxi without having to worry about others watching.
After Zhou Shuyan sent Lu Youxi the restaurant address in the afternoon, Lu Youxi checked it out.
She hadn’t expected that the restaurant Zhou Shuyan chose was quite nice and suitable.
Neither too upscale to be imposing nor too casual.
The two of them entered a private room first.
After more than ten minutes, Pei Jingyuan and Ji Deyi also arrived.
Although Pei Jingyuan and Ji Deyi had met Zhou Shuyan before, they hadn’t had a proper chat.
This was the first time they had a chance to talk with Zhou Shuyan.
"Brother Zhou, the boss said you work at Chengzhou," Ji Deyi, having had a few drinks, became much more relaxed, "Which department are you in?"
Zhou Shuyan paused for a moment and said, "I work at the Chengzhou Group headquarters, in the same park as Chengzhou Technology, but I’m in Building A."
Zhou Shuyan vaguely bypassed mentioning which department he was in.
He didn’t want to spin another lie.
"So you work at the headquarters, that’s amazing!" Ji Deyi said admiringly, "No wonder your colleague specially came over to tell you that we also registered for the support program."
"There’s nothing amazing about it," Zhou Shuyan said with a gentle smile. "Moreover, I wasn’t involved in that. I didn’t pull any strings or leak any information to you. You were selected on your own merits."
Pei Jingyuan nodded emphatically, "The boss kept it from you at first for fear it would affect your work. You did nothing, yet because of us, you were suspected. What an injustice."
Ji Deyi sighed, saying, "If it were up to us, we should ideally avoid such conflicts of interest. But right now, at the start of our venture, we had no choice. Chengzhou’s support program is too good an opportunity to pass up."
"Don’t worry about it," Zhou Shuyan said warmly, "But it’s best if you don’t mention knowing me. It’s not that I fear it might implicate me. Our work environment isn’t as harsh as you think. I didn’t meddle in this application of yours, and even if our company knows about our relationship, they won’t suspect us."
"You were chosen by Vice President Xiang and R&D Manager Shen Yanqing of Chengzhou Technology on their own discretion, not because someone pulled strings or spoke highly of you behind the scenes. Especially since Xiang Shihong and Shen Yanqing have good reputations within the company for keeping work and personal matters separate. This is one of the reasons they were promoted to leadership positions. Despite Xiang Shihong being in his forties, he has managed to secure the position of deputy general manager amidst the fierce competition at Chengzhou. For his age, he is considered young for the role."
"It’s his solid competence and earnest demeanor that have carried him. Xiang Shihong is very serious and meticulous, despising any acts where superiors take credit for their subordinates’ work. Such a person would never allow unfair competition. His reputation is well-established here, and those selected by him won’t be suspected of internal favoritism."
"But I don’t want you to disclose our acquaintance to avoid misunderstandings. Chengzhou internals know our situation, so they won’t think much of it. But your competitors, whether selected or not, might overthink due to their lack of insight into Chengzhou’s affairs."
"Those not selected might believe their designs were outstanding enough to be chosen and might blame you for nepotism, thinking you stole their spot. Even those who were selected might doubt your qualification to be chosen alongside them."
After hearing this, Pei Jingyuan and Ji Deyi sobered up quite a bit.
They had never considered this perspective before.
Zhou Shuyan was indeed pointing out a serious issue.
The two shook their heads repeatedly, "We absolutely won’t mention it, we’ll keep it confidential!"
Zhou Shuyan nodded, "You clearly deserve it based on your abilities. It would be too unfair if people suspected otherwise."
"Exactly!" Pei Jingyuan drank sorrowfully, "Dealing with programs is easier. You input commands, it doesn’t give you other outcomes or make wild guesses, falsely accusing people."
Zhou Shuyan chuckled lightly; Pei Jingyuan really was a man whose thoughts were pure and simple, solely focused on his research.
Dealing with Pei Jingyuan, wasn’t it just as straightforward as dealing with a program?
