Chapter 196: Chapter 196 Sudden Attack
Next day
"We need to leave. We can’t stay here forever," said Damon, looking at Kyra, who was playing with Meeko. The little boy was trying to grab her finger, but she kept pulling it back and holding it high.
"Yeah, sure. We have to go back to town and see if we can find Meeko’s daddy," Kyra said, hugging the soft little boy. He giggled and started playing with her hair.
"Alright, let’s get ready," Damon said.
Kyra put on her space clothes and also covered Meeko with her thick sweater to keep him warm.
"Let’s go" Kyra said, as they walked outside, Kyra put Meeko down and she turned off capsule and Meeko looked her with wide eyes.
"Don’t tell anyone alright baby" Kyra said picking him again in her arms who nodded with his eyes Still wide.
"I will shift," Damon said, transforming into his dragon form. Lowering his body to the ground, he allowed them to climb on. Kyra first helped Meeko to sit securely, then she climbed on herself.
As Damon began to rise and spread his wings, she glanced at the horns on his head. When he took off, she hugged Meeko tightly, ensuring he felt safe and secure during the flight.
The wind rushed past Kyra’s ears as Damon soared through the sky, his powerful wings cutting through the air with ease.
The snowy landscape below was a patchwork of forests, rivers, and mountains, painted in the golden hues of the morning sun.
Kyra held Meeko close, feeling the warmth of his small body against hers.
Meeko giggled as he peeked over Kyra’s shoulder, fascinated by the world rushing by beneath them. "Look, sister little thing! So many trees!"
Kyra smiled, her heart warming at his innocent excitement as she nodded.
The journey was mostly calm, the rhythmic flapping of Damon’s wings almost lulling Kyra into a state of relaxation. But her guard never fully dropped. She knew they were still in dangerous territory, and the memory of the recent attacks lingered in her mind.
As they flew over a dense forest, a sudden sense of unease washed over Kyra. She tightened her grip on Meeko, her eyes scanning the treetops below. "Damon, slow down. I feel something... off."
Damon growled softly, his wings adjusting to reduce speed. "What do you sense?"
Before Kyra could answer, the air around them seemed to shift. A strange, big bird like Archaeopteryx with dark energy pulsed from the forest below.
He banked sharply to the left, but it was too late. From the treetops, dark, shadowy figures burst forth, their forms twisting and writhing as they ascended towards them.
"Damon!" Kyra screamed, her heart pounding. "We have to get out of here!"
Damon roared, his body twisting mid-air to avoid the oncoming creatures. But they were fast, almost unnaturally so.
One of them lunged at Damon’s wing, its claws grazing his scales. Damon roared in pain, his flight path faltering for a moment.
Kyra clung to Meeko, her mind racing. "Hold on, Meeko! We’ll get through this!"
Damon’s voice was strained. "I can’t shake them off! They’re too many!"
The shadowy bird creatures swarmed around them, their eyes glowing with a sinister light.
Kyra felt a surge of panic. They needed to find a way to escape, and quickly. She glanced around, her eyes landing on a snowy rocky outcrop not far below.
"Damon, there!" She pointed frantically. "Head for those rocks! Maybe we can lose them in the terrain!"
Damon nodded, his wings straining as he veered towards the outcrop.
The creatures followed, their eerie shrieks filling the air. As they neared the rocks, Kyra felt a glimmer of hope. The uneven terrain might give them an advantage.
They swooped down, Damon expertly navigating the jagged rocks.
Kyra held her breath, the creatures hot on their trail. Just as they reached the outcrop, Damon twisted his body, narrowly avoiding a sharp pinnacle.
The creatures weren’t as agile, crashing into the rocks with a series of sickening thuds.
But they weren’t deterred. The remaining creatures regrouped, their numbers still overwhelming.
Damon landed heavily on a flat part of the outcrop, his sides heaving. Kyra slid off his back, still holding Meeko, and glanced around frantically.
"We need to find cover!" she shouted, her voice barely audible over the screeching creatures.
Damon shifted back to his human form, wincing in pain. "This way!" He grabbed Kyra’s hand, pulling her towards a small cave entrance hidden among the rocks.
They scrambled inside, the darkness swallowing them. Damon quickly moved to the entrance, using his strength to roll a large boulder in front of it. The creatures outside clawed and hissed, but the rock held firm.
Kyra sank to the ground, her heart racing. Meeko clung to her, his small body trembling. "It’s okay, Meeko," she whispered, trying to calm him. "We’re safe now."
Damon leaned against the cave wall, his breathing heavy. "That was too close," he muttered. "We can’t stay here for long. They might find a way in."
Kyra nodded, her mind already racing for a plan. "We’ll rest for a moment, but then we need to move. We can’t let them catch us."
The silence in the cave was short-lived. Damon and Kyra barely had time to catch their breath when the screeching outside grew louder. The creatures were relentless, their claws scratching and pounding against the boulder blocking the entrance.
Kyra’s heart raced, and she could see the same tension mirrored in Damon’s eyes.
Suddenly, the boulder shifted, cracks forming around its edges. The creatures were breaking through. Damon stood up, his eyes flashing with determination. "Stay back!" he ordered, his voice firm.
The boulder burst apart with a final, deafening crack. The creatures flooded into the cave, their dark, twisted forms filling the small space. Damon shifted back into his dragon form, his powerful tail lashing out and knocking several creatures back. But there were too many, and they kept coming.
Kyra held Meeko close, her mind racing. Damon was strong, but he was being overwhelmed. She bit her lip, trying to think of a way to help. The creatures swarmed Damon, their claws slashing at his scales. He roared in pain, struggling to fend them off.
