Chapter 405: Chapter 25 The Deceived Children
After spending half a day trying to persuade him, Han Shouzhen still couldn’t convince the seemingly agreeable young man to give up the idea of having Xu Ji marry his sister, only to end up with a dry mouth and a heavy heart.
Lin Xiaoguai looked on helplessly. Han Shouzhen wasn’t unwise, but she didn’t understand that country kids had their own cunning. If Lin Xiaoguai had aggressively offered money today, he might have hesitated, but her gentle persuasion only showed her soft heart, which undoubtedly strengthened his original resolve.
However, she felt she couldn’t help much. Kindly persuading was one thing, playing the "good cop" was another, and she found it difficult. As for Zheng Cuicui... Lin Xiaoguai glanced at her and decided to let it be. The sister-in-law wasn’t without plans, but she was also good-natured, or she wouldn’t have been bullied by Liu Yuzhi and her mother-in-law like she had been.
Han Shouzhen would have been suitable, but she had lost the initiative.
As they walked out of the visiting room, Han Shouzhen let out a defeated sigh and called over a prison guard to ask, "Does he have any other family members?" Thinking that if the man wouldn’t listen to her, she might have to consider asking someone else to persuade him.
"Only a sister left." A youthful-looking prison guard said somewhat sheepishly: "Zhang Jian’s parents are both deceased, and last year, even the grandfather who raised them passed away. He left his sister with his uncle and aunt and went to the city to work."
He paused, "His uncle and aunt are not good people either. His sister is such a young child, she’s been abused terribly. Not only is she covered in bruises, but her eyes have been blinded by the mistreatment."
"What!?" Han Shouzhen was shocked, "His sister’s eyes are blinded?"
The prison guard nodded, having overheard the conversation between the distinguished guests and Zhang Jian, and said with a cautionary tone, "Although the doctors say it can be cured, it will cost a lot of money. And even after being treated, she’ll be highly myopic, practically blind without glasses."
Lin Xiaoguai and the other two were stunned, not expecting such a situation.
"Does Zhang Jian know?" Han Shouzhen asked angrily.
If he knew, wasn’t that duping somebody?
"He doesn’t." The prison guard shook his head and said softly, "That guy is kind of strange. Usually very easy to talk to, but he goes crazy if anything happens to his sister. When he was first brought in, he was like that, desperately wanting to see his sister, even banging his head against the iron bars until he bled, not resting even in the middle of the night. Eventually, it took calling his sister’s primary doctor to calm him down."
Han Shouzhen frowned and asked, "Which hospital is his sister in now?" Although the fact that Zhang Jian was unaware eased her mind, she still felt annoyed.
"She’s in the City First Hospital." Guessing that she intended to visit in person, the prison guard added, "His sister is named Zhang Xin."
Seeing Han Shouzhen’s intent, Lin Xiaoguai and Zheng Cuicui did not object; they had committed themselves to this cause for the day.
Upon reaching the City First Hospital, they easily located Zhang Xin’s ward. However, they didn’t barge in but stood at the window to observe.
"How is the child doing?" Zheng Cuicui asked the nurse accompanying them.
The nurse nodded and then shook her head, "Although she’s been mistreated quite a lot, there aren’t any severe injuries. But her eyes... it’s going to cost several thousand to treat. Moreover, the child is too timid. Since she doesn’t have any family with her, she’s very good, but she cries secretly at night, which actually worsens her condition."
Lin Xiaoguai watched the thin little girl in the hospital bed carefully feeling an apple. She was skinny, her hair dry and brittle – a clear sign of malnutrition. Her already small palm-sized face seemed even smaller with bandages over her eyes.
But Han Shouzhen’s frown deepened.
"Look at that child. I’m not being picky, but how can Ping’an marry such a bride?" On the way back, Han Shouzhen sighed, "Aside from her status, the child looks so timid, and with her vision problem, how much ridicule would Ping’an have to endure?"
Lin Xiaoguai and Zheng Cuicui remained silent upon hearing this. What Han Shouzhen said was realistic yet problematic. Although Ping’an wasn’t in great health, he was undeniably exceptional in looks and demeanor. Such a girl... they weren’t being mean, but she truly wasn’t a match for him and would only hold him back.
However, discussing this was pointless; the key was that Xu Ji himself was unwilling to let go.
The three returned to Zhi Xin Garden, and as they got out of the car, Lin Xiaoguai hesitated before asking, "Sister-in-law, don’t you think there’s something strange about Zhang Jian?"
