Chapter 402: Past Life (Part 2) — I Won’t Let You Be Alone_2

Xu Meimei, unaware of the true circumstances, simply assumed that Shen Chi, due to his old age, fell seriously ill because they had been overly frivolous. From then on, although she still longed for intimacy, she never dared to initiate it.

Occasionally, when she saw her in the prime of life devoted wholeheartedly to him, an old man, the normally sane Shen Chi, no matter how tough-hearted, would feel a twinge of pity. But when he thought of Wanwan, that pity quickly dissolved.

How could he, in such a state, have any right to feel sympathy for her?

Since then, Shen Chi had never mentioned Lin Xiaoguai again. His temperament had become even more silent and stern, tending only to a few old people around him, appearing as stoic as a statue that neither cried nor smiled, formidable to those who saw.

Only Chen Han understood the turbulent storm brewing in his heart.

Even later, when he recognized Han Shouxin, facing his biologically cautious elder brother, Shen Chi’s emotions showed no fluctuations.

However, his treatment of Xu Meimei became increasingly better, indulging her to the point of dependency which, to the observer Chen Han, felt horrifying.

Amid Shen Chi’s day-by-day cold isolation, the powers surrounding Liu Yuzhi and Dong Fei toppled one by one. Before the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law could react, they were accused of mental instability, diagnosed with mental illnesses by psychiatrists, and confined in a psychiatric hospital. Meanwhile, Han Shouyi, the director of the Military Department’s research institute, was denounced for stealing someone else’s research accomplishments, and overnight his reputation was destroyed, becoming an outcast that everyone detested. The only male grandson of the Han Family, Colonel Han Shaoze, was also killed by stray bullets during a mission, and his wife and children died in a chain of car accidents on their way to the hospital.

While Shen Chi was busy eliminating his political adversaries, he hadn’t anticipated Xu Meimei doing such a thing.

"Dead...?!" Xu Meimei spoke frantically, disordered in her explanation, "It wasn’t intentional, truly... There was a document about IVF in your desk drawer, I assumed it was prepared for me... I wanted to surprise you. But the doctor said there was no spermatocyte in your mesterolone dosage, stating this would only show after a vasectomy... You lied to me, you have no idea how heartbroken I am..."

Shen Chi couldn’t absorb a word from Xu Meimei, the intense headache seemed to momentarily drift away, and he crouched down, struggling to embrace the lifeless Lin Xiaoguai in his arms.

"Wanwan?" he whispered gently, as if afraid to disturb something.

"Wanwan."

"Wanwan."

"Wanwan."

...

He called out repeatedly, seemingly tireless, yet with a tone increasingly filled with pain and despair.

Until his voice became hoarse, he seemed to finally calm down to face reality. Avoiding others’ assistance, he picked up Lin Xiaoguai and started walking back step by step.

Xu Meimei was stunned, wanting to speak and stop him, but was silenced by a glance from Chen Han.

A few steps away, Shen Chi suddenly turned to look at Xu Meimei and coldly said to Chen Han, "Take her back to the hospital."

Seeing that he still considered her potentially falling ill from the rain, Xu Meimei felt joy, thinking he would no longer pursue the matter.

Chen Han, however, looked at her pitifully, knowing Shen Chi intended for Xu Meimei to join Liu Yuzhi and Dong Fei.

It appeared that with Lin Xiaoguai’s death, Shen Chi indeed returned to normal; otherwise, before deriving the ultimate pleasure from Xu Meimei, how could he consent to sending her to a psychiatric hospital?

But he quickly concealed the pity in his eyes, knowing Shen Chi definitely was aware of what he had done, simply choosing not to speak of it.

But he wasn’t afraid. If it allowed his old friend to return to normal, what did it matter if he lost his life?

Chen Han watched as Shen Chi carefully changed Lin Xiaoguai into a clean and beautiful Qipao, tenderly dried her skin wet from the rain, and delayed until the very last day before reluctantly having her cremated.

Chen Han had hoped that, with Lin Xiaoguai’s passing, Shen Chi would gradually regain his former spirit, but to his horror, he discovered that while Shen Chi’s mind had indeed returned to normal, his body deteriorated day by day, as if quietly waiting.

Chen Han knew what he was waiting for... he was waiting for death.

"Where is Chi?" outside the cemetery, Han Shouxin, Wan Youle, and Shen Xiu arrived a tad late, with Colonel Han Shouxin worriedly inquiring from his wheelchair.

"Uncle went inside, he didn’t want us to follow," Han Xinyu pursed her lips.

"Ridiculous! Why didn’t you try to stop him?" Han Shouxin frowned.

Saying so, he made moves to wheel inside.

"Don’t go," Chen Han reached out to stop him, whispering under Han Shouxin’s displeased look, "Let him be happy in his final moments."

Han Shouxin paused, then sighed, lamenting how the Han family always produced romantics. His brother and sister both left the world in acts of profound love, leaving him alone—what was he supposed to do?

"Brother, has he still decided against the surgery?" Shen Xiu asked sorrowfully.

Chen Han shook his head, "He never wanted it, all the more so now."

Knowing that Lin Xiaoguai’s departure removed his pillar of support, why would he be the villain? But thinking of Shen Chi’s current physical state, not lasting many more years, he didn’t regret it—Shen Chi so loved Lin Xiaoguai, sending her off first so that, once he followed, he might find happiness there.

If Shen Chi blamed him, he’d go below to apologize.

After all, as a lonely old man with no children, once Shen Chi was gone, there was no need for him to continue living and wasting the country’s resources.

The group silently waited outside the cemetery, but probably only Chen Han knew they couldn’t expect Shen Chi to walk out on his own.

Inside the cemetery, Shen Chi touched the smiling face on Lin Xiaoguai’s tombstone, slightly squinting and softly curving his lips tenderly, "Sleep, I’ll be joining you soon."

Below the tombstone, there was space reserved quietly empty for an urn. (To be continued. If you enjoy this work, please visit Qidian (qidian.com) to cast a recommendation or monthly vote. Your support is my greatest motivation. Mobile users, please read at m.qidian.com.)
